I have also have a 1973 SB. I think the cleans are awesome, really love my amp and It really takes pedals well in my opinion. Nice video!

Yep, Early Marshall plain and simple! Loud and clean....to the point. BTW, keep an eye on this channel. I am in the midst of some major Marshall stuff, Part 1 is up, pt2 in the works, and pt 3, a real jewel coming up probably after the first of the year. Thanks for watching.

You need to crank that shit to 10 buddy, and hit it with a Micro Amp, or a Tube Screamer. SB's are one of my fave Marshalls for dirty tones, without a Dist pedal. One of my fave OD's to push a Marshall over the edge is the Earthquaker Plumes. Has double the volume on tap, and the gain is just like a tubescreamer, but with three clipping styles. Another thing you can get is the Soldano Hot Mod type things. You could get your SB just cooking without a Dist Pedal. That's part of what makes a Marshall so special is how they sound cranked, for Rock, punk, and metal anyway, but Dist pedals still sound cool through them. Live that's what the Ramones did, DS-1's, and Marshalls.

Such a beautiful amp. Great work as always 👊😎 Uses a pointer without banging on everything with it.

I ran my 1969 SLP with 4 cabs for years. Had it hotrodded my "Module" at Marshall back in 1986. Went on the road for years with not a single issues

The old amps and OLD tubes were great! When you got a good one they were incredible.

That is some awesome work and it sounds beautiful! Super Basses are wicked for the more bottom end you can conjure without sacrificing the traditional plexi-type sound. Might've been geared towards bassists but i think more guitarists flooded to them ( sorta like the Bassman itself: the inspiration to the original JTM45s ironically)

That first 820 ohm cathode resistor by the 330uf cap looks to be a CC resistor.

Yep, I noticed that just as I had said there were none. Not used to seeing them in Marshalls, but one pops up now and then. If you kept watching you notice I pointed it out shorly afterwards. Thanks for checking it out.

Adam jones from tool uses I think it's a 1976 marshall super bass lead 100 watt that supposedly modified....I'd love to have one of those....wonder why they dobt sell a kit for an amp like that...

They do , just just have to know how tho convert it. But it is still not the same. Actually you can probably buy a real one for the price of a half baked "clone" and yes I hate that clone term.

    Isnt that 820r
    cathode resistor CC?

Finally! someone noticed. I saw the Carbon comp resistor as soon as I made the comment. I let it slide because it is uncommon, Marshall must have been out of Carbon film at the time, and the V1 cathode resistor was not a sensitive position. My point was though that most tone connoisseurs used to insist that Carbon comp resistors MUST be in the Plate load, and signal passing resistors, and in some cases the power supply. The point was that Marshall never subscribed to that theory, although that was military spec, state of the art materials at the time. Most early Marshalls I have seen used wirewound resistors through out.

😂🤘 dude I gotta tell u I've got a 2204 800 plate lit 4 stage that I spent 6 weeks with using two 4 way switches, first I decided on values then on brand/composition of ALL caps/R's. I would "like" to think I'm objective with decent ears and I'll take this to the grave, I think the 1st but especially the 4th k sounded better in CC. Likewise the 4th k cap (1uf) was best in tantalum. ?? I went between original pihers, Vishay MF, chinese MF and who knows what, probably old Boogie CC, whatever that is but all 1 watt. The values were all dead on 6.8/1.8k respectively. None sounded bad and honestly I couldn't tell a difference in the 1st 3 but the CC had some kinda 💥 too it. Whadda u think? I measured them all out of circuit so maybe the CC drifted a little once it had DC across it? Another place I swear on the bible sounded better in CC was the 82k in the PI. Same shit exactly 82. The 100k, I couldn't hear a difference in any type. I'll add that I use a 4 way at the slope and I didn't decouple 😭😂yeah yeah lol but settled in the Vishay cuz it was a C hair quieter, nothing to do with tone. So yeah call me a superstitious low brow but I will swear on both my parents graves, and I will admit it may have not just been sound but feel. All I ask is that u or someone educate me. Cheers 🤘

Sure, been there. In my mods and builds over the years I have gone through pretty much the same process. However, what I was saying was that it was not common for Marshall to use carbon comps. Also some of the best sounding amps I have come across used all carbon film resistors. Now, on to the important part. It is not exact specs exactly 82k or 100k that is the issue with CC. It is noise. I will not argue that they may have a better feel, and I used to use them religiously in vintage Fender rebuilds. Until they all came back eventually for noise issues. CC resistors are clay/carbon particle construction and can be prone to shot noise. That is why I do not use them for plate resistors or power supply resistors. They are less problematic in preamp cathode circuits but I have had noise issues there as well. BTW I want to mention.... I did not correct the cc comment in this video to see how long it took someone to call me on it. Occasionally, I put a little something in for the hotshots. I am still waiting for someone to notice a little test I staged in a 900 video.

I wish that was mine or even hear it. The sound piece my crap phone had to demolish it havent took the time to get a new one. I had an older peavey centurion mark lll that was the best sounding amp that i owned that i let go like a dummy. Trying to find another one of those also with no luck. Man i wish we could play music sometime. I hear you about the carpal tunnel stuff and joint inflamation to though. I smashed my pick holders off tgat were sewn back on so my pick wants to move and fly away unless i use a tad bit of gorilla snot which lets me not mive the pick around while playing to get the sounds i want alot of times.
