  • Bar Harbor, located on Mount Desert Island in Maine, is a charming and historic town known for its scenic beauty, rich history, and close ties to Acadia National Park.
Bar Harbor wasn't always known by its current name. Originally, it was called "Eden" until 1918.
The town was renamed "Bar Harbor" because of the sand and gravel bar, which is visible at low tide, connecting Mount Desert Island to the smaller Bar Island.
The town has historically been a summer retreat for the wealthy elite, with famous families like the Rockefellers, Fords, Vanderbilts, and Astors having homes there.
Bar Harbor is renowned for its Maine lobster. You can find many eateries and lobster pounds serving up this regional delicacy in various forms, from traditional lobster boils to lobster ice cream.
Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park, one of the most visited national parks in the United States. The town serves as a hub for visitors exploring the park's forests, peaks, and shores.
Bar Harbor is a prime location for whale watching tours. The waters off the coast are frequented by various species of whales, including humpback, minke, and finback whales.
Bar Harbor's combination of natural beauty, historic charm, and coastal allure make it a unique and cherished destination in New England. Whether you're hiking in Acadia, enjoying a lobster dinner, or simply strolling through its streets, there's always something special to discover.

It sure is. I’d love to spend a few “summers” there.
