It has actually been said Rio is the other parent. 1. Rio can shift their form 2. She is death but also creation. Nicholas was going to be stillborn because he is the son of death, she needed to collect him.
Rio is actually the other parent. As Death, a cosmic entity, it's possible for her to give life. Jac Schaeffer in her interview shared that they casted a child that looks a lot like Aubrey Plaza.
Agatha is so fascinating, as are her relationships with the others in the show. Not just Nicky and Rio but also Billy and Alice and Jen and Lilia. There’s such an interesting give and take with her character. Because as you said, she is vicious and cruel and callous, but she’s capable of being caring. Her motives may always be tinged in a self serving light but there are moments that stick out to me. Her being the one to give Jen the pep talk in ep 3. Her being so gentle with Lilia after she has her own fear vision in that same episode. In episode 4 her making sure Alice knows exactly what her mother wanted with her version of the ballad (and Agatha being a mother herself, relaying that message). Her bonding with Billy. And then her entire relationship with Rio, you could dissect that for hours. Which is why it’s interesting how when Episode 5 comes along, and Agatha is the one that needs help, the witches are quick to turn on her. Just as her original coven - her mother - did all those years ago. They’ve all bought into the story that Agatha is beyond saving - even Lilia who is constantly trying to set the record straight about witch stereotypes and false rumors, she buys into everything said about Agatha without flinching. And when Agatha is the one in need, even though she helped them pass the first two trials, they can’t bring themselves to do the same. Again, this isn’t to say that Agatha is blameless or that she helped them out of the goodness of her heart. She had her motives. But it’s actually astonishing how much Agatha actually tells the truth on rewatch, even when being called a liar. I also just want to bring up how, the more over the top and cackling Agatha is, the more she’s putting up a front. The more attention she’s drawing to herself the more she’s hiding. Kathryn sells all of the little nuances of Agatha’s thoughts without ever uttering a word and that is crazy.
What was interesting to me in Agatha’s trial was the moment that her mother said to her “you were born evil” you could see that hit the other witches in the room because you know they had *all* been told that shit at some point and I feel like that was what moved Alice to try to protect her.
The thing that Rio (Death) does that shows her compassion is that she hides Nicklas Body from his view. In the show it's established that she can either show or hide the diseased persons body from their soul. Love it
Oh boy. I've avoided this show because this very subject stabs so very close to home. If I could have begged someone for more time with my son, I absolutely would have, too. As it stands, I will just hope that I can one day either be with someone who has kids or maybe even adopt one day. We'll see where life takes me. Thank you, Jono, for covering this topic. Being an invisible mother is so much more difficult than many realize.
I was raised by a lioness. My mom fought fiercely for us, long before we ever actually got to meet. She fought infertility and terrible odds, but never once gave up on her dream of having kids. The results were me and then my brother. We fought for our lives in labor and delivery - and she did it twice. Twice, she straddled life and death, and twice she clawed her way back, for her children. Ever since, she has been our fierce protector, sure provider, hard worker and diplomatic voice of reason. I'm proud to be her daughter, honored to have her for a mom. And blessed to have her as a best friend, too, as a grown woman myself. A parent with which you share mutual love and respect, is such a beautiful relationship to have. I will cherish my mom forever and beyond, and I'm grateful for the love of lionesses.
One clarification though: Rio/Death IS the father. Death is a formless abstract that can take whatever form they wish to do the function of their "job" (what God is stuck in a form? even Olympians are all about changing forms). Agatha is certainly furious because "taking" Nicky at birth means he will be with one parent (Death itself) forever and Agatha would never see or spend her time with her child that she gave birth to which is as unintentionally cruel as it gets. One might wonder if Nicky was dying at birth BECAUSE he's the child of Death. In any case, the creator Jac S already confirmed this but said why they couldn't say it outright. That said, they left the clues, like Nicky looking like RIO. The timing is perfect because the comics even resolved the truth of Mystique being Nightcrawler's FATHER (able to copy even DNA through material) and Destiny (Irene Adler) being his actual mother. This isn't the first rodeo for shapeshifters having kids.
I love this show so much and there are endless layers to Agatha. What I saw so much was people talking about how she couldn't see past her grief to see the gift of time that Rio gave her but really for "normal" humans, six years is nothing, and for Agatha, who was roughly 350 at the end of the end of the show, 6 years is like a BLIP to spend with, probably, the greatest love of her life. It would have never been enough time but six years seemed like nothing to her. (Disclaimer: I don't blame Rio, she is baby girl and I love her)
I've always seen her as rather neutral. She's gone through so much trauma. Her mother rejected her and I doubt was very loving. She had this power she couldn't control, that she didn't understand. So she has to take it up on her self to learn, to survive. She killed her entire coven to survive and because she couldn't control this great power. She was always alone until Rio and Nicholas. She lost her coven, her son and can't open her heart fully to the woman she loves (Rio/Death). She and Wanda are actually so similar. So see a lot of Agathaa humanity in the series, but she keeps that wall up. She's one of my most favorite characters ever because she's so real. Also Kathryn Hahn is incredible
Would love to see you do this for Lilia, Alice, Jen, and Teen in Agatha All Along as well. Each character goes on a meaningful journey, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
I have been waiting for you to analyze Agatha!! Cinema Therapy is the reason I watched WandaVision and then I was so excited when Agatha All Along was released!
Agatha All Along was a fantastic show that made me go through all the feelings…. I fully believe any loving mother would always want more time with their child, if they knew the child would not live a long and happy life. I can’t fault Agatha for that. I think the person that moved the needle of Agatha being a better human the most was Billy. He became a pseudo son to her and she longed for him to really be Nicholas.
I really like the idea of Death being also the one true (and thinking of her power and being the only really) green witch. Something they created just for the show but I think it's perfect for her. she wants the balance between life and death, she knows if something dies some other things can grow, like the death of Agatha but the flowers and mushrooms starts to grow above her body.
I watched this and by the end... I felt like we knew each other's center 'Well 'o Strength'. That's what I call it. It's the thing that keeps me surviving against the odds (literally I should be dead) and it can really hurt to have that Well. But my life was different.
Thank you for these videos, they are always very goood! Can I just say that in this one you are… off-kilter, like Alan would say? aahah Thanks aagain and keep up this good work! 😄
I’ll be facing the scariest time in my life in time , I’ll be losing my mother …. I know I can’t reverse it or stop it …. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone even those close to me who have hurt me badly beyond repair ,,, I know when that time comes I will be forever changed I won’t be the person I was ,,,, my wounds will be open but I’ll heal revealing the scars of the hurt on my forever changed heart , because I know I’ll never share a bond with anyone else and the only person that will ever understand me in my whole life , I’ll be walking this daunting world alone …. Forever changed forever more , but with love and peace not hate … 🙂
Witches don't need men to have children so I think Death and Agatha were still lovers when Rio had to take Nicky. Which ouch actually makes that hurt worse.
I don't know why this thought came to me. But when Jonathan said he has met only a few people who are vile, I thought maybe evil people just don't get therapy at all.
I have no one in my life that I can ask so I'm asking you because I know you do this kind of thing. Sorry if its the wrong place but I need help from somewhere. How do let go of the sense of worthlessness that someone left me feeling because they treated my like I was worthless? I can't seem to get over that. I saw this person as a spiritual leader and I had feelings for him and he treated me like I was a piece of trash and basically punished me for not being good enough by giving me the silent treatment. He messed up my spiritual life, my love life, my emotional life, my mind. I just don't know how to come back from that. I feel broken. Please, how can I navigate this?
I was upset with the MCU iteration because with the majority of her appearances in comic books Agatha isn't the monster they presented. I will say I loved Katherine Hahn's performance as Agatha, I don't know why that change angered me when other changes didn't, I'm not particularly attached to her as a character, but I never saw her as an evil monster.
It was eye-opening, seeing Agatha's backstory; she became a sympathetic villain, similar to Thanos. I'm not sure Nicky needed a different father; since Death is a personification, there's no reason it couldn't manifest as a male as much as a female. The Rio persona was how Death related to Agatha. I'm also interested in what you think of Billy; how did he handle what he went through, how he took accountability for what he did on the Witches' Road. There's also a family matter that may be worth examining (spoilers follow): One of the issues people had with Wonder Woman '84 was Diana's involvement with Steve while he inhabited someone else's body; that person was seen as a victim of abuse at Diana's hands (though I doubt she intended that). Billy isn't in the same situation that person was, but he's not William Kaplan either. While I don't think he's been inconsiderate or selfish in not telling William's parents what happened to him, Billy is being dishonest. I would like to see that plot thread pulled a bit more (maybe in Vision Quest?) (I don't think Marvel mis-stepped with this the way DC did, but it's not been addressed as far as I know.)
It's the last episode. The second to last episode has a very season finale feel to it, so I could see thinking the show was over without realizing there's a whole episode left.
i think agatha was supposed to die in childbirth with nicky, and Rio couldnt bring herself to take the love of her eternal life, so she only took her son.
this video is beautiful and so true except i do not believe in any world that agatha was impregnated by a man idk how it happened but i know how it didn’t
Respectfully she is not MORE than a villain. We as a whole need to stop seeing bad people/villains as individuals who aren’t capable of having more nuance to them or good aspects in them or trauma ! She is a serial killer 😭🤞🏽
I compare her to Alpha/Dee from the series The Walking Dead. To be frank, I stopped feeling sorry for either of them. They both were gaslighting abusive women who didn't deserve their kids love. Agatha is less sympathic to me than a lot of villians, she constantly backstabs and sabotages people, she even did such to Lady Death. I'm glad I watched the series but tbh, both the murderous wrenches get a big ol no sympathy from me. Even if in their own minds they were doing the best thing. The road to hell is paved with good intentions after all. I mean, I don't feel bad for male villians either who are like this, its a equal opportunity no sympathy.
Came here looking for Gilmore Girls gets Therapized 😞. Why this analysis of other TV shows goes to other day? I don't want to be a pessimistic, but at this pace we will never get to the season seven. Or the One yaear in life.
Someone on the last Gilmore Girls episode just complained that there was too much Gilmore Girls being covered. This channel is great for Jono to be able to explore multiple options that he may not get to cover on Cinema Therapy (for good reasons). I personally think it's great to see a variety of TV shows and other mental health topics be covered, and trust that he'll get around to covering what he can 😁.
