      Fire Garden album but without the Southeast Asia feel / spice. I lack the vocabulary to express it.
      In Synesthesia terms, this piece is light blue with flickering pastels and curvy hills, Fire Garden is dark green with orange and red dots and a spikey landscape.
      But they're both in the same countryside.
      No, I do not do acid. :-)

      If it's not like the end of his seven mode song where the full band just slams on a disgusting chord long enough to justify checking off the "sure, we did Locrian, whatever" box I'm going to be very disappointed. Locian can be awesome but Jake's refusal to ever work with it is just too amusing to let that go.

    • @wingtsun1
      @wingtsun1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      you can kinda cheat by playing any C ionain chord progression and play all as slash chords with B base
      So something like C/B, Em/B, Am/B, Bm7b5, C/B
      Still sounds horrible though so I dunno

    • @carbonmonoxide5052
      @carbonmonoxide5052 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I wrote a 4 minute classical piece for violin and piano in Locrian, and it’s been called the best thing I’ve ever written by multiple people. It uses A Locrian, with a ton of accidentals and modulations. However, an E natural is not one of the accidentals it frequently has. In order to have a i chord, I just took the 5 out of where I wanted the harmony to rest, giving me an Am3 (just A and C). It worked really well. In order to have that not feel super weak, I used a Bb5 chord before it whenever I wanted it to resolve, so it wouldn’t feel so comparatively empty. There’s also quite a long piano solo, which has a bunch of augmented and diminished chords, but all ends up resolving, quite satisfyingly, back to an Am3.
      TLDR: Locrian works if you really want it to. I dunno how you would create anything in Locrian with a full rock band.

    • @viniciusbertucci
      @viniciusbertucci 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Modulating at every chord change would be the trick for Locrian, but then the song would be compromised of just half diminished chords.
      I think quartal harmony would be the best way to use Locrian. When you avoid thirds, you avoid tonality and the sense of one chord leading to the other.

    • @FreeSalesTips
      @FreeSalesTips 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Music theory tells us why something works in music. It's certainly possible to rediscover old music theory knowledge through trial-and-error brute-force note progressions. For me, I'd rather spend my time studying music theory for a bit of time. It's awesome to access the fruit of scholarly work of hundreds of music scholars who came before me; I don't need to rediscover the knowledge that they've already worked through.

    • @luvpants2012
      @luvpants2012 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah theory opens up new worlds for composers. It's vital for doing anything Progressive which is the sheer nature of Progressive. But the polar opposite of this is a song like Sweet Caroline. Just the raw genius of Neil Diamond at work plus some brilliant arranging on top. That took theory but Pop music is about the writing, then bringing in role players to embellish it in the studio. Perfect example is George Martin arranging the string quartet in Yesterday. Paul was not a big theory guy but his song filtered through George Martin is a masterpiece. Eleanor Rigby too. Even if the writer doesn't know theory someone else in the equation should for maximum output!

In this case moving E Lydian up a 'normal' 4th to A Lydian sounds also well I think, because A lydian is the same notes as an ordinary E ionian scale, so you actually give the listener kinda a 'normal' E for a while :-). The examples are really good and explained well enough to be meaningful without dying under the weight of analysis and I think they really show how valuable theory is. While there might be people who are able to "just feel it, man" most people can't. Theory can also help piece together good ideas that are otherwise disconnected.

    Props for promoting Shpongle. Such a good and versatile compositions. It is kind of snob statement to say something about creativity and music theory. Music can be regarded as some sort of communication. Although you don't need to know how it is done to enjoy it and feel the motions that it conveys it is highly recommended for people trying to create it to know how it is made. For example Jimi Hendrix taught himself music theory to better communicate his musical ideas to the rest of the group. I strongly believe that did not take anything away from his influential compositon skill if he knew also in theory what was happening.

    All the creative people I've been around All say the same thing.......I couldn't do this or that without...........
    That's because a tool, device, technique, physical sound, chance, or a real mentor/teacher......showed you something that was the link that let out the captive talent to blossom in the real world.
    I grew up with friends who were outrageously gifted athletes, but didn't see it themselves, or not recognized by others....like a buddy of mine who could outrun almost anyone @ high school, yet thought nothing of it because it was just normal. Track coach tried to get him on the team, but he said no because he didn't want to do all that work, he'd rather smoke weed and work on cars.
    Ran into others at school who could sing like trained vocalists, yet the same thing......not interested in following that talent, just singing to themselves......
    You are one of those people. Great teacher, can simplify hard to get across concepts so we can understand them, and just like all the people I've been around who have this talent bubbling up inside them, don't think they "have it"....but you discovered the tools/work/dedication that is letting it all come out......If you didn't have that bubbling talent, you'd be coming up with simple music like Mary had a little lamb, or Twinkle twinkle little star over & over again.....Don't shortchange yourself.....charge ahead and Crush It......Hey, tune title maybe.......?

    Thanks for the video. I enjoy learning music theory, especially from your great teaching. To me music theory gives the foundation on which to base creativity. When I get stuck, I consider my scale, mode, chord progression, etc. and then use it as the structure for sound creativity.

    Surprised no one's mentioned Peter Gabriel's 'Solsburry Hill', or if they did, I missed it. One of my favorite 7/4 songs.

    Thanks so much for these videos. Some are over my head in theory but I try rewatching them to get a hang of the notes and scales and how they interact. Keep it up. Maybe one day I’ll understand. Thanks again.

    Haha, i literally have written a song where a central transition motif is the same as what you present at 5:06. Definitely capitalizes on the lydian feel!

    Great riff my friend.. so good sound !
    I often use the lydian mode way to create that psychedelic and somewhat dissonant atmosphere in my songs !
    Enjoy
