My Rising 23 year old Canadian Sport Horse is in the process of learning second level dressage after a good career as a hunter over fence/ hunter derby horse. His good well trained auto-changes has made first level test 3 a real challenge, by always wanting to correct the canter lead on the single serpentine, the collected canter is also opposite of what he needed as a hunter horse, been fun trying to teach an old horse new tricks.
This will be so helpful for my 25 year old OTTB and me! Would love to continue this series especially on legging up the older horse after giving them the winter off
@@Beckyannewatkins Me, three! I rode my 25-year-old TB for the first time yesterday after him having a winter break. We walked most of the ride, and only trotted a large circle in each direction with a trot down the diagonal.
My Appendix Qusrter Horse mare is 30 years old. Here in the Sierra Mountains of California, we spend the winter months playing on the ground with lots of walking interspersed with tasks like HQ/FQ yields , stop and walks, stop and Backups, lat yields, trots, trot-canter transitions and more along with trail walks. She is always eager to be involved. Think it helps keep physically more mobile as well as mentally engaged. Your suggestions are spot on. 😊
My mare will be 21 this year! She is a gift. After a few year break I’m getting back into showing! Thank you for this video! I am always looking for ways to make things better for her in her golden years!
Thank you for this video dedicated to the older horse. My horse (Arabian Cross) Asher is going to be 20 this year and his walk is one of my favorite gaits to ride. You inspire me to do the best for my horse. Thank you 🙏🏻💗🦄
This video was a great reminder of how important a proper warm up is for older horses. My great-niece is leasing my 21-year-old hunt seat gelding, so I will be sure to forward this video on to her. Thank you! ❤
I have a wonderful Morgan who will be 21 soon. We used to compete 2nd level but nowadays we school light dressage and spend lots of time walking😊 Thank you for this video! You gave wonderful explanations, and I will definitely be applying these exercises into our routines 🙏
My 21 year old paint mare Lilly and I thank you for this! I've been doing a lot of walking and big figures but she definitely wants to start out slow in the trot and I've struggled with how much I should allow that. Also great reminder to work on myself too!
This was good and helpful! Spirit is 23, I think, so this applies to us! We have a 5 minute walk and then serpentine and 20 meter circles and then slow to faster trot. I love the loose rein idea at the beginning! You are helping us so much in planning our warm up! 💜🐴
Thank you for sharing these tips and thank you for pointing out the importance of adapting your riding to your older horses need. It is so true they still have so much to give and teach ❤❤❤❤
I am riding a 27 year old mare who doesn’t seem to understand or accept her age. We do a lot of work at the walk to loosen her up but also to help keep her quieter and to remind her that halts matter. In the cold weather, I do lunge her lightly to let her loosen up without weight on her back. She requires consistent work to minimize her dragon moments.
My Australian Stock Horse is 20 and we are retired from dressage nowadays. But we trail ride 5 days a week and do “dressage” on the trail . Occasional arena work just to show we still have it and then occasionally he teaches young kids to ride. Most of work in in walk with occasional trots.
This video definitely confirms that the warm-up I’d been doing for my 30 year old Haflinger was appropriate. Unfortunately we’ve had 5 months off, and I’m about to start him back up. I’ve been hand walking him, but I need to get back on to see how he’s really doing. It’ll be a very, very “slow” and careful back to work process. He turns 31 in May 💕
Great work keep it up! We are doing a groundwork webinar this weekend you may enjoy: amelianewcombdressage.com/free-groundwork-webinar-2025/?TH-cam&Groundwork+2025
Although I have found all of your videos very helpful, this was particularly so since it confirmed what I have been doing as helpful to my mare and myself, and not simply the only thing we're able to do. She is a 24 year old lazy Hanoverian and I'm an almost 78 year old rider. The gradual development of movement helps us both (especially my arthritic hips). In our wonderful month of winter here in Miami, we can gradually work up to some upper level movements, if our work has been consistent. Otherwise, we usually do work similar to the video, with octagonal circles, leg yields, transitions, the Snowman and cavalettis. Thanks again for these well-developed instructions.

My Lipizzan gelding will be 22 in a couple of months. He still has amazing suspension, but I don’t 😂 these warm-ups will be helpful for both of us! The biggest challenge for me is getting him to do a quiet, slow trot. I thoroughly appreciate your emails and videos. Thank you so much for sharing so much training. Means a lot when I no longer have a budget for that.

The mature gentleman warmblood I'm riding is 23 young. H e was competed to prix St George where he scored consistent 70 - 75%. Our first competition we scored 72%. and we came first. Or being honest he scored 72% i happened to be on his back at the time 😄
Just started leasing a 15 year old. He will be 16 in June. He's a baby compared to my last lease, who will be 28 in June. She had to go back into retirement this past fall. 😥
