    For the record, it's not like we (the spurs) WANTED to trade Kawhi, but for some reason he got it in his head he didn't want to be here anymore *cough* uncle *cough* and demanded out. Toronto was the only team worth trading to and was willing to do a trade. Although not exactly a franchise altering trade, it was definitely not good for us.

      How they gonna pay for that roster and keep it under the cap?

    • @ergoat
      @ergoat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lk5388 Yeah, Joe Johnson (one of the most overrated/overpaid players ever) got a $100mil contract in Atlanta, and ruined basketball for fans there with his uninspiring (technically an Allstar, but by default) play. Iso Joe's style didn't mesh well with Pierce's then, and didn't a decade+ later when they played together on the Nets. Whereas Delk and Rogers (who Johnson was traded for) were excellent roleplayers and their immediate impact that season brought the Celtics within 2 games of the NBA Finals.
      The WORST Celtics trade was the next year. Kenny Anderson had come from being a perennial overpaid underachieving player on the Nets to a valuable roleplayer point guard for those fun ~2000-2003 Celtics teams led by Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker, and the fans loved his contributions. They traded Anderson for Vin Baker, an alcoholic (poor guy), who immediately crashed and burned, ruined the team's chemistry and playoff potential, and had Celtics front office make a series of panic trades that killed the franchise (and Pierce's prime) for 5+ years.

    With the IT trade, it goes a lot deeper than most think between the previous owners to the players and staff. Started with the Mike Malone firing which was beyond puzzling which led to the full neglect of IT because they actually didn’t want him in the first place but Malone, Cousins, and Rudy Gay did which is why all of them were removed from the team. Problem is the Kings missed out on many opportunities to build a proper team around Cousins. Missing out on players like Dame and CJ McCollum whom were players the Kings were actually gonna select until draft night and changed their minds at the last second. Another player who wanted to play for Sacramento which is highly surprising and here’s a hint, him and IT battled against each other in college and were in the same draft class. That’s right, Klay Thompson. Sacramento unfortunately is prone to overlook on generational talent. Others misses like Steph Curry, Giannis, Kawhi, Kemba, Luka and soon to make this list I hope is trading Gary Trent jr for cash. And another big one, Seth Curry. And there’s a big possibility that the Haliburton/Sabonis trade might not work in the Kings favor unless De’Aaron Fox gets back in all-star form like he was in the 20-21 season. I’m starting to think this franchise is severely curse because ain’t no way you can keep making these types of mistakes unless you’re under some form of influence.

    "OKC would have had 3 MVPs."
    Except all three of Harden, KD, and Russ needed to be on their own to win MVP. Russ won his first year without KD (or any other star next to him). Harden won as the main star of his own team. KD won while Russ was injured during most of the season. If they all stayed together it would have been more of a Spurs situation. KD as the Tim Duncan winning most of the accolades while Russ and Harden would be the Parker and Ginobli players picking up the scraps.

    As a Spurs fan, yeah we probably could have gotten some younger talent instead of Derozan for Kawhi or something, but I don’t think it turned it as badly as it’s portrayed here. Kawhi’s trade value wasn’t super high because it was clear he wanted out. Getting Derozan was in no way bad, but possibly underwhelming. However we also got Jakob Poeltl and the pick that became Keldon Johnson, so that’s two very important pieces of our current young core.
    Lastly, Derozan’s impact on the Spurs was way bigger than just a first round exit. He really helped mentor the young guys and I truly believe his influence is a big reason for Dejounte Murray’s All-Star breakout season.

    I was hoping for a "Vancouver" Grizzlies mention because their trades literally ruined the franchise and they left the city. You could probably start with the Grizzlies drafting Steve Francis (despite Francis saying he didn't want to play in Vancouver) and what the Grizzlies got in return for the trade to Houston. 1999 wasn't the greatest draft year, so its hard to say if drafting someone like Jason Terry would have made them any better. The Grizzlies 1st ever draft pick in "Big Country" Reeves is what ultimately did them in. They also pick Stromile Swift in the 2000 draft when they could have selected ... well 2000 was a terrible year, worst ever perhaps. Anyway you put it, no trade would have saved the Grizzlies from leaving Vancouver.

    • @HerculesRockefeller91
      @HerculesRockefeller91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks for mentioning the Vancouver Grizzlies. That Steve Francis pick was the final nail in the coffin. Stupid Stu Jackson drafting that guy despite him flat out saying not to pick him. Then they didn't even get anything good in return. I think Michael Dickerson was the best player the Grizzlies received but he wasn't a star that they needed. If I remember correctly too, the Suns wanted Big Country and the 97 pick for Steve Nash. Steve Nash being a BC native playing for the BC team could have done wonders for the fans. They would have a hometown hero to cheer for. Had that trade gone through, who knows what could have happened.

    Yeah no, the worst Indiana Pacers trade was sending their 1984 draft pick for Tom Owens. Ended up being the 2nd overall pick and likely would have been Michael Jordan.

    That was fantastic, I stuck through it all haha! Your attention to detail is immaculate! I miss your podcast with Flight and Coop, love all your guys content! I didn’t know all of that man! I definitely am not shocked by the Knicks, that stuff I knew haha! The start with Atlanta or then St. Louis was shocking, to think Petit and Russell could’ve been a duo that won the 11 championships together and that would be the legendary franchise instead of Boston, I’m sure if it were in Atlanta at that point it would’ve been different, probably a more welcoming environment, the Showtime Lakers possibly not being a thing either, also shocking, Jazz really biffed that one haha! Maybe Malone and Stockton could’ve had rings lol, Bulls could have been champs with Rose and Aldridge, the list goes on, I’m in awe, thanks again for putting this out there man! Really interesting stuff!

    Great video as always Mike! I would like to disagree on the worst Timberwolves trade. I would say the Jimmy Butler trade was the worst since we traded Zach Lavine (fresh off back to back dunk contest wins and a torn ACL), Kris Dunn and Lauri Markkanen. Butler only stayed one season and then we only got dario saric and robert covington. But, The Big Ticket one hurt.

    Your list of franchise ruining trades is pretty good overall. The only one I don’t think should be on this list is the Kawhi trade to Toronto. Kawhi’s camp had made it clear to the Spurs that he was not going to play for them and wanted to go to the Lakers at the time. Knowing this information, most franchises were unwilling to give up much for Kawhi except for Toronto. Give credit to the Spurs organization for not trading him to the Lakers for scraps and at least getting a star and good role players in return for an unhappy Kawhi that would have otherwise left the Spurs via free agency.

    Sad fact about the Bucks trade: Robert Traylor died before Dirk retired
    30:32 Also, the real What If? is "What if the Thunder never traded Jeff Green for Kendrick Perkins?". I personally think that a lineup of Westbrook, Harden, Durant, Green, and Ibaka (with either Durant or Green as a small-ball 4) could have been unstoppable for about five years (four with all five and one without Green because of his 2012 heart surgery).

    The Pau Gasol trade was universally a great trade for both teams, the Grizzlies could’ve done nothing with Bynum the same way they did nothing with Pau, and then they got Marc Gasol who peaked at the perfect time. So yeah sure at the time it was bad, but it was literally a great move.

      As well the timeline for Marc was a bit off. He was the 48th pick in the draft but he was still commited to Spain before he could join the NBA. During that time he had a breakout season where he won Spanish league MVP which made him more than a lucky late pick but instead one of the more attractive prospects coming out of Europe.

    Raptors are always gonna be at a deficit when it comes to trades because being in Canada presents a whole sets of challenges that playing for American cities don't have to go through. The fact that they won a Chip in 2019 meant just about everything has to go their way to make it possible.

  • @patfer1189
    @patfer1189 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's frustrating that, to this day, the Spurs' DeRozan trade is complained as not being 1:1. Of course it wasn't but out of timing and necessity. The Spurs didn't have much of a choice and DeRozan was the highest profile player they were gonna get under those peculiar circumstances at that time.
    Leonard was not going to play anymore if he wasn't traded, the Spurs would have lost him for nothing if he wasn't traded that offseason prior to his last contract year, and teams were weary of his health and the drama around him. And no- the trade deadline wasn't an option as other teams would have waited to the last second during those last months of his contract and lowball talent offerings to get Leonard.
    It so happened that previous offseason the Raptors were going all in with a championship run and they had an All-Star to trade. It was hardly a case of San Antonio thinking DeMar was Leonard. They did they best they could with the offers they got at a time when they had to move Leonard for something or lose him for nothing. And while DeRozan may not have been the defender Leonard was there is no question that his offensive game was good. More importantly, unlike Leonard, he was a consummate professional and Spur representative while he was there even as he had been not happy with being traded.

    Amazing video! You're the man, Mike. Seriously. Also, your video made me, a Pistons fan, think about just how good Chauncey was. Not only was there that huge drop-off after he left, but if you look at his numbers... wow. Most of his career, he averaged over 40% from three. And his career average is 41% from three. And he wasn't coming off of screens nor getting help to do it. If his career had started 10 years later, then his ppg would be so much higher, because the coaches would have him shoot more. But that's not all... even on lower ppg, that 40% three point shooting must have been doing wonders for the Pistons offensive spacing. And we were a horrible offensive team. Horrible. Imagine how much worse they would have been without 40% three point shooting from Chauncey? And also, Chauncey snagged around 6+ assists per game on a reallly stagnant and horrible offense. And there were times when the offense was dead, and that's when Chauncey would just start trying to re-ignite the offense on his own. He was so critical in making one of the worst offenses I've ever seen merely look "pretty bad." And that might sound like an only minor achievement... but we were HORRIBLE on offense!
    Basically, without Chancey's space-providing threes and ability to set-up teammates, the Pistons might have had troubles even making the playoffs. The offense would have been just so bad, that the stellar defense wouldn't have been enough to save them. And then, the lack of offensive production from guys like Ben Wallace and Tayshaun Prince would have been seen as a liability. The team would have never even gone after Rasheed Wallace. And Dumars would have had to blow up the team. Big Ben and Prince would not be as highly regarded nor maybe even well known. Etc.
    On the flip side, the Pistons were good before Sheed arrived. They were also good after Big Ben left.
    Basketball is a team game, so none of this is as simple as I'm making it out to be... but Chauncey may have been the biggest key to Pistons success. And in more recent eras, his offensive numbers would be unreal. His three point shooting, plus his driving and passing would net him absurdly good numbers today.
    I think Billups might actually be an all-out superstar. An all-time great. But right now, he's sadly just viewed as "very good."

    • @pwnedd11
      @pwnedd11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I'm in the middle of watching the video right now. Not done yet. But GREAT point about Middleton. That was disastrous. However, I gotta say that Stan Van Gundy would have just traded him off anyway! Lol, that's a joke :) With Middleton, Drummond would have had the spacing he needed in his prime. We could have gone deeper in the playoffs. So, yeah, that's a bummer. Drummond was in a bad situation in his prime years. We'll never know what he could have been. Maybe he would have never became a superstar... but maybe he would have! We'll never know!

    For the Pistons: I think even if Middleton got good with Detroit, he was gonna be traded anyways as part of a rebuild because he was on the Pistons during one of the darkest times of the franchise, where rebuilding was happening every year with little to no results, so more than likely he was gonna eventually get traded

The 5th pick turned into Scottie Pippen

    For Detroit, the Billups trade was WAY WORSE than the Middleton trade. Billups was the cornerstone of that Pistons lineup and should have been the last guy to get traded...especially for a washed AI. It ended their playoff run, and they haven't won a playoff game since 2009. Middleton was a relative nobody on a bad team, that wasn't really on anyone's radar when he got traded to the Bucks.
