Why do I feel like they'd keep the cure to themselves only give it to the elites take themselves somewhere safe and live happily ever after and just leave the rest of society in the apocalypse.
In the game there are firefly logs that the player can find that shows that ellie was not the first immune person the fireflies had and despite trying to create a cure they were unable to create one
“Even if you think what Joel is doing is wrong, you don’t get a say in the matter.” I know this is about part 1 but I can’t help but feel how relevant this line is to part 2

The way you phrased things at the part at the dam made me realize how well they subtly convey how much Joel and Tommy care for each other. When Tommy sees Joel with Ellie he realized that she's becoming like a daughter to him and he knows that losing another one will destroy him. So he agrees to take her. And then when Joel gets back with Tommy he realizes how much Tommy has built and doesn't want to take that from him. As different as they are they really do always have each other's backs.
There are many theories as to what really happened in this ending, but this is my interpretation: Joel does end up lying to Ellie. Many wonder if Ellie did believe Joel, but I believe that Ellie didn't believe him. You can see it in the emotions she portrays when Joel says "I swear." She looks almost sad, yet she accepts the answer he gave her. She still feels that survivor's guilt that Magma says, but she chooses to live with it. She knows that Joel is hiding the truth from her, but she makes the choice to live that lie, up until TLOU2, where she can't continue living that lie anymore. At this moment, however, she chooses to "believe" the lie because she has finally found someone that will not abandon her the way others have in her past. She found someone that truly loves her and wants to continue feeling that.
Idk if she actually doesn't believe him, I think that she believes him but is skeptical if that's the full truth, which is why she investigates in the second game.
It's almost like you are playing a movie, rather than simply playing a game. The story line, the way they are able to portray emotions through their voice acting. The last of us games are truly masterpieces
I keep saying, Joel did what he did in the hospital only because of the way Fireflies treated him and Ellie. If they would have give them time to speak and say goodbyes, maybe it would have ended differently. He did what anyone would do for the person you love. And I especially agree with the creator of this video about How Joel is soo cool, and the music being fucking amazing. I love TLOU 1 and 2. Excited for TLOU part 1 rebuilt for ps5
Tbh I don't think Joel would be willing to give up Ellie either way, but maybe Ellie could convince him or at least tell him it's not his choice to make. Also yes hype for part 1!
@@magmalecreme That's the thing. As much as Joel cares for her, that is not his decision to make. Ellie was the one who should have the final say, the fact both the fireflies and Joel deprived her of that choice really rubbed me the wrong way personally.
Glad you played the old "remastered" version instead of the newer remake. As much as I loved the remake, it doesnt really keep the same art style that I loved so much. I remember playing this game on a CRT tv in the middle of the night and being completely immersed. Wish I could forget this game and replay it.
I feel as though the remastered version is head-and-shoulders above the original in every conceivable way. Especially the more detailed and dynamic face designs and expressions. The cutscenes come alive with so much more dimension from the upgraded visages alone.
Lol I'm with you on the art style, although I don't mind the realistic style either. The remake wasn't out when I made this video so I didn't have a choice anyways lol.
Marlene was not the equivalent of Ellie’s mom. She did not watch over Ellie ever besides the few weeks she was bitten. Joel has so much more connection, so much more time and blood sweat and tears gone into connecting, caring for, and loving Ellie. Joel is her guardian, Marlene is just some lady who knew her mom and met Ellie once.
Something I love about this game it's the insane detail Joel has with his watch, in a lot of moments since the beginning of his travel with Ellie when he opens up, he always looks or touches his watch being the first time I think just before the capitol, when he ask Ellie about the view, and the last one at the end of the game, it's a detail a noticed recently, and just makes me think about all the details this game have
I always believed that he wouldn't give her a gun because he wants to let her be a kid. Even in this messed up world. Yes also the trust had to be there. But mostly as she would start killing, she would start to be consumed by guilt and breaking the barrier of taking lives. (what he did in the 20-year gap of losing Sara). >> last of us part 2. Eventually he accepted the fate that she needed a gun to survive after she helped him.
I love both games. I feel The Last of Us Part II gets unfairly hated due to the fact that it went a direction that wasn't expected for the most part. If you really think about it, the second game is like The Godfather Part II or The Empire Strikes back to The Last of Us as The Godfather or Star Wars (A New Hope). It took a chance, got divisive reactions, but probably will get reassessed down the line for how brilliant it really was, just like The Godfather Part II and The Empire Strikes Back were. I actually wouldn't mind seeing a deep dive analysis of Part II from you. You have just earned yourself a subscriber in me.
I actually do like part 2 a lot. Most of the story part im actually ok with, though I probably would've left you know who alive a little longer. The issues I have with the game are other things like pacing & characters. Lol I probably should make a video on it because I feel like I would have a lot to talk about.
I understand your point, but it wasn’t just the fact it went in a different direction, the execution of the story was sloppy in parts, and while I don’t hate Abby like some people do, her side of the story was really dry and lacked any direction. I think comparing the last of us 2 to Empire and the Godfather part 2 is bold. Both those stories at the very least had a consistent tone in comparison to the first and expanded on the first story, whereas the TLOU2 butchered the two central characters of the first game by making one extremely unlikeable and not even a logical extension of the character from the first game and we all know what happened to the other. I do agree that it’s unfairly hated, I think it suffered from the success of the first game tbh, but putting it in the same sentence of Empire and the Godfather part 2 is inflammatory if you ask me.
I hope that it gets more love in the future because TLoU part 2 (as well as the DLC) actually solidified the series as one of my favorite video games/franchises. The writers cared about telling their story instead of focusing only on what made the audience happy, which I wish more people did. I always see people saying that there were flaws in the characters or how the story was told and I don't get it. Flawed characters shouldn't be bad, I felt that both Ellie and Abby were flawed but that was due to the world they live in breaking them and seeing their transition to realizing that revenge killing is never the way to peace will always be a story I look back on.
@@jinxedangel2 yeah honestly the story is good for me, I just have other problems like pacing and characters. For example, imo Jesse is super boring because he's just a likable dude so no conflict ever comes from him, compared to someone like Henry who caused the player to constantly think that he could possibly leave the group to save Sam. The only conflict that happened with Jesse was when he wanted to save Tommy instead of going after Abby but that's about it.
At around 18:57, mentioning how Ellie points out Joel’s watch being broken- another thing to add here, is how, when Joel gets the watch at the beginning, he makes a joke about it being broken. This is some really good writing and foreshadowing of the relationship between the two moving forward. He joked about his watch being broken when he got it as a gift from his daughter, and now his future daughter-figure is making mention of the watch literally being broken. Pretty dope from the writers there
The Last Of Us and The Walking Dead has had such an impact on my life, how the gameplay and story telling can make you have a connection with these characters. I absolutely love you're retrospective videos, keep up the good work!! Also at 32:32 I love that scene with the music play over the radio, gives me goosebumps every time.
Yep, tlou and twd are basically my two favorite games. Also yeah the music is awesome, I wish I could've played it all but I didn't want the clip to be too long
didnt realize you were the guy who made the Walking Dead videos and went to check if that guy (you) made a part 3 because I love those games. I saw a notif for this video and thought, "oh dope something to watch at work, TLOU is dope." I haven't watched yet, but i'm sure this video is a banger, much like the first two TWD videos. Def smart as well, because tons of TWD fans played TLOU. But please keep this up, your content is amazing and you'll find an audience for sure.
Fantastic, extremely detailed review. Summarised the story beautifully, enough information to get the big picture however not enough to know each little spitting fact. Matching with the soothing voice and calm atmosphere that you have created in the video to generally have a relaxing time. Keep up the amazing videos - Will definitely look out for much more of your work!
You left out the part in the house, after Joel and Tommy had to find her, where ellie opens up about him abandoning her. Such an amazing and emotional scene "Everyone I've ever loved has left me... everybody except you!
Probably been beat to this point but Ellie knows how to pop a clutch because she was raised in quarantine zones and had military training, probably taught all sorts of things that may end up being essential, which probably includes how to drive and pop a clutch and how she kinda figures out how to siphon gas
i just love this game. part 2 is great and all but you can't beat where it started. the feeling is unmatched because no other game has made me so invested in any characters. great video man!
This is a good game no doubt about it...One of my favourites..I just started a run through it again, today... Now on a side note One game that had an adverse effect on me was " The Last Guardian " The bond you form with Trico as the game gets going, was like bonding with a real live pet, A true adventure, in every sense of the phrase...If you haven't played it yet, I recommend giving it a try, a simplistic game with an epic feel to it . One of the most under rated games out there...Most reviews were not kind to it. Cheers and keep on gaming.
I always thought Ellie knew how to pop a clutch because before getting bitten she was attending a military school. Driving would be a good skill to teach to people who will be joining the army one day.
These are some of the best retrospectives I have ever watched. I just want to say thank you for these videos and I can’t wait to see more in the future!
I think a cute little thing that's easy to miss is back in the toy store, after Sam puts down the toy, if you watch, you can see Ellie quickly pick up the toy when she thinks no one is looking. It's easy to miss cuz she waits until no one is looking at her.
I love this game as well! I can watch other people's gameplays of this over and over and not get tired. Part 2 gets a lot of flack but I LOVE that one too. The character designs in part two was just breathtaking. Espcially Joel and Ellie. They looked so real it was kind of uncanny. LOL. I can't wait until the remastered version comes out (next month?) for part 1.
I remember playing this game back when it came out such and emotional rollercoaster I just played the second game recently and that’s was a masterpiece the last of us is one of the best franchises in my books
this is an amazing video essay. it shows perfectly its story and the main characters' perspectives and motives. literally the best tribute to TLOU i've seen so far.
I remember playing this for the first time a few years ago on the PS4. Remembered when you are riding the horse into the college campus. I remember getting off of the horse and the very subtle music track called “Flutes and Pads”. For whatever reason, that just hit me so powerfully. I’ve never felt like I’ve really taken a journey with characters the way I had with Joel and Ellie. So many of these subtle moments throughout the game. When your first walk into the park and Tess dies and the sunlight coming through the trees. Ellie playing with Fireflies. So much attention to detail to these little moments that I’m sure many missed completely, but not me. Loved these beautiful moments in this masterpiece of a game.
Couple of corrections, love the video so far though!! ❤ - the quarantined cities are run by the military, not the government. Fireflies were established and are trying to get a government body implemented.
this is such a good video dude i absolutely loved it! also, regarding david, i think he was a vile person and had some sick interest in ellie. the way his people described ellie as "his pet", the way he held her down in the lodge, the way he spoke to her (especially when he got her down in the lodge), the violent way ellie took him out, and the aftermath of the whole situation; she realized what he really could of done to her and his true intentions and that was really traumatic. i understand that trauma to a certain extent so i see why she was acting the way she was; that stuff really gets to you and sometimes you shut down when in the process of healing. also, seeing you mention berleezy put a smile on my face :) once again great video!
The last of us was a big part of my childhood, it's such a moving and growing experience on you. I wish there were/I know more games like this. Again, Thank you for the beautiful narrative.
Man once you find a game like tlou it gets you playing all kinds of games to try and get a similar experience lol. Thanks so much, im glad you enjoyed the vid!
How in the actual FUCK do you only have 2.85k subs?! This video was amazing. It put into words the way I have felt about this game since it released. I truly believe the person I am today wouldn't exist without this game. I've played it at least 6 times, probably far more. I eventually stopped counting. Fucking fantastic video dude, just subbed. I'd love for you to review all seasons of the Walking Dead game, I know you've done an all-round retrospective of it, along with a s2 retrospective, but I'd really love to hear your thoughts on the later seasons of the game. I really enjoyed it up until the 3rd season, which is when everything kinda went to shit. It was still fun to play, but it just didn't feel the same. It felt like the later seasons were wearing the skin of the earlier seasons. It looked okay at first glance, but if you look at it any longer than 10 seconds you can tell its a blatant facade in order to make more money. I was SO disappointed in Telltale games when the last 2 seasons of the game came out, it had so much potential and they just WASTED IT. I look forward to seeing your reviews and retrospectives of other games. You've just earned a new, loyal sub. Great work dude
7:38 I feel that kind of mirrors real life... I live in Rotterdam which might not be the biggest city but when I travel to let's say my home country of Cape Verde I get the same feeling.. It's a tropical island chain off the coast of west africa.. and it sometimes feels dreamlike.. especially when you're up in the mountains away from civilization
IMO, The Last of Us the TTG's The Walking Dead perfectly captured the greatness of the early 2010's for the zombie genre of video games, long before the market got oversaturated and long before both companies started to fall off the deep end (writing-wise). The soundtrack alone for both games fill me with immense senses of happiness and nostalgia, they remind me of fantastic times before...well...before the world became what it is now lol. Great video as well, Magma!
It would be a huge project lol. Currently I'm just doing these in my free time and idk how a 50 hour game cut into a video would go. If I could find a way to make it not super long I totally would!
one of my favorite little parts of this game is the name at sam and henry's hideout, in one of the conference rooms, that is basically a slow motion breakdown of how the city fell to/became hunters: through scared democracy. horrifying
TLOU and it's sequel are the greatest games ever made (behind only Great Escape on the C64). Gameplay isn't perfect but it is fast, fluid and fun, yet the stories are unmatched in gaming. Both are true works of art.
Just finished a 3rd play through. Honestly, that was the only way I could truly understand the decisions made in TLOU2. Wtf was Ellie thinking letting Abby go? After playing this and really trying to understand how each character perceives their situation, it all comes together much more nicely. TLOU2 still got some major problems though. 8mo prego = savage warrior. Just realizing you maybe prego with morning sickness = almost got our main character killed. The best part, the 8mo prego chick is way later in the game ⁉️. I’ll stop this rant before it gets too far
One thing I’ve not seen about the Fireflies is the idea that they never deserved to make that cure because they didn’t earn it. They should’ve kept Joel in captivity, tied him up, or at least been able to kill him on the sight. They also acted way too quickly. They needed much more time than what they had given Ellie and Joel. Ellie first can’t even consent to being harvested for a cure nor did they acquire it from her. The Fireflies were lost souls, grabbing tight onto whatever pieces they had from when they were kids and young adults. It’s ironic that they want to go back to their PAST by taking away Ellie’s FUTURE.
This is one of the best TLOU video I’ve ever seen. The way you talk about it just made me love and appreciate the game even more. Please make a video of TLOU2 as well. Even if you love or don’t love it 🤙🏼
I know this somewhat unrelated, but because of my love for this game, I have a haiku for it: Needless death, he wept. Through decades, hardened like stone. His life, changed by her.
Dude, you are seriously underrated. I got reccomended this video because tbh I'm going through another tlou phase and I can't believe you don't have more subs! Seriously good stuff!
I imagine Ellie probably drove(stole) a military vehicle, probably sometime before the left behind dlc since it also tells how Ellie knew how to ride a horse too
I finished the game yesterday for the first time. Still don’t understand how this level can’t be reached by any of the games till today. Not even by ND. It has to be the gametime=price trend which even ND fell for with TLOU2. This game took me with lazy playing 18.5 hours and instantly gave me the wow experience and drove me to place this game on top of all others I’ve played ever. A good story game isn’t about the time it takes to finish. TLOU proved perfectly that it’s about an ideal mix of story, acting, concise but deep dialogs (with good body language), with the story coherent gameplay and pacing. ND couldn’t follow its own rules to repeat this. I prefer 18hours of tense, focused, emotionally and intellectually rewarding gaming over 60hours of grinding. Thanks for your review it really delivered the quality this game deserves.
I played the original and was blown away. I haven't played any of the remakes and probably never will. What I experienced that first time can never be replicated by playing again.
Yep, the first playthrough truly is phenomenal. I personally like the 2nd game and I think it's worth playing, but the first game is really all you need for the pure last of us experience.
Wow amazing, just amazing! had me engaged the whole time and it was so thoughtfully crafted I know everyone always says this but I can’t believe you don’t have more subscribers, just wanted to share my appreciation for this and to commend your talent

No problem, thank you for watching! Im glad you find my voice soothing, sometimes I think it gets too scratchy so I do a lot of retakes to make sure it sounds alright.
@@magmalecreme no problem man. Hey and I have a little theory about the end of the game now I have played the second game buuuut I like to think the fireflies would have fucked up the cure. Because through the entire game the fireflies and getting wiped out by the military, the bandits and even the zombies. Also Joel took down their entire operation. now Joel is a badass but he's just one guy so I think the fireflies would have messed it up soooo I side with Joel 😂😂
58:58.. I can't remember which book it was, but I was reading some book about a zombie apocalypse and the author mentioned how the people who mastered stealth were actually the ones who ended up being the long-term survivors, not the brutish-guns-a-blazing type of people. The latter actually got killed off pretty quick becuase of how noisey they were and lack of actual skills and foresight.

@@magmalecreme That's the thing. As much as Joel cares for her, that is not his decision to make. Ellie was the one who should have the final say, the fact both the fireflies and Joel deprived her of that choice really rubbed me the wrong way personally.
@@ironmilutin She's a child with survivor's guilt. I wouldn't say she could consent to the treatment either way.
People tend to ignore that the fireflies treated Joel like shit
16:22 Tess is a complete BADASS!! When I found out she was bitten it totally broke my heart
That's what I'm saying!
Tlou was littarly my childhood this game was my masterpiece I love this game to death I never experienced such a good story until I played this game
Honestly so true
Love this video!! The fact that people still make analysis videos about tlou after so long proves that it's a masterpiece 💖
It stands the test of time!
Bruh the remake release is just on it's way...people won't just be talking about it , they'll be buying it soon 😂
@@Zeegoku1007 yup lol, its coming back into the mainstream!
this game will never stop being so good, I can’t get tired of it no matter what
Same, its a masterpiece
Glad you played the old "remastered" version instead of the newer remake. As much as I loved the remake, it doesnt really keep the same art style that I loved so much. I remember playing this game on a CRT tv in the middle of the night and being completely immersed. Wish I could forget this game and replay it.
Agree about the remastered
I suppose you're right
Is that true though? Why was it so difficult for Marlene to let the doctors do the surgery then? Why was she saying “this is what Ellie would want”?
Something I love about this game it's the insane detail Joel has with his watch, in a lot of moments since the beginning of his travel with Ellie when he opens up, he always looks or touches his watch being the first time I think just before the capitol, when he ask Ellie about the view, and the last one at the end of the game, it's a detail a noticed recently, and just makes me think about all the details this game have
Yeah it's really in depth, naughty dog is always on their game for details
At 1:05:34 when joel calls Ellie babygirl i CAN NOT help but cry, since it was his nickname for Sarah
Hm interesting i never thought about it that way. That does make sense, he doesn't want a kid to have to kill people.
@@maxNYGuk fair
Pretty dope from the writers there
Bro they thought of everything
I have played it numerous times. It is my favorite thing to experience. I don't believe it can ever be topped.
I dont think it can either
Lol yeah I figured a lot of twd fans would also like tlou, im glad you're enjoying the videos!
Thank you so much! I'm happy to hear that people think my voice is soothing lol.
never really realized how much tlou has made an impact on me. absolutely love this game, and your video! keep up the good work😊
Yep you don't realize it until you notice that you keep thinking about the game lol.
You left out the part in the house, after Joel and Tommy had to find her, where ellie opens up about him abandoning her. Such an amazing and emotional scene
"Everyone I've ever loved has left me... everybody except you!
That is a banger moment!
Probably been beat to this point but Ellie knows how to pop a clutch because she was raised in quarantine zones and had military training, probably taught all sorts of things that may end up being essential, which probably includes how to drive and pop a clutch and how she kinda figures out how to siphon gas
Oh huh I didn't think about that, that would explain it
Throughout this whole video I cried like 4 times. This is a perfect video.
Thanks so much!
i just love this game. part 2 is great and all but you can't beat where it started. the feeling is unmatched because no other game has made me so invested in any characters. great video man!
Thanks! And yes the characters and writing are so dang good
This is a good game no doubt about it...One of my favourites..I just started a run through it again, today...
Yeah I don't doubt it, I still wonder how many working cars are around though
I'll never forget this intro to Last of us. Hit me right in the feels the first 20 mins
I know its so sad
These are some of the best retrospectives I have ever watched. I just want to say thank you for these videos and I can’t wait to see more in the future!
Thank you for watching! I'm hyped for more as well just because I love seeing the response and how yall feel about the games.
I do really like part 2. I have some small issues with it like pacing and some writing but graphically it really is on another level.
@@magmalecreme Do you plan to review Part 2?

this is an amazing video essay. it shows perfectly its story and the main characters' perspectives and motives. literally the best tribute to TLOU i've seen so far.

“No matter how hard you try, you can’t escape your past.” It means so much more now thinking about part 2.
yikes fr
So much detail packed into one game with an incredible soundtrack on the side. It truly is an incredible game
Couple of corrections, love the video so far though!! ❤
- the quarantined cities are run by the military, not the government. Fireflies were established and are trying to get a government body implemented.
Ahhh ok. That does make sense. I guess I figured military = government, makes sense why the fireflies would be fighting for control of the people.
this is such a good video dude i absolutely loved it! also, regarding david, i think he was a vile person and had some sick interest in ellie. the way his people described ellie as "his pet", the way he held her down in the lodge, the way he spoke to her (especially when he got her down in the lodge), the violent way ellie took him out, and the aftermath of the whole situation; she realized what he really could of done to her and his true intentions and that was really traumatic. i understand that trauma to a certain extent so i see why she was acting the way she was; that stuff really gets to you and sometimes you shut down when in the process of healing. also, seeing you mention berleezy put a smile on my face :) once again great video!
Yeah I definitely think David was a creep. I'm glad that we get to see ellie recover a bit from the trauma after seeing the giraffes
i never realized how goofy the horse in tlou ran, naughty dog please do more studies on how horses walk and run i am begging 🙏
Omg you're right that run is goofy asf
the for sure fixed that in part ii

Thank you so much! I totally agree about s3, but s4 was really good imo.
Joel couldn’t save Sarah but he was damn sure gonna save Ellie
Hell yeah!
Good work mate,it made me remember what i liked about this game and why it is special for me.I couldnt understand how 1 hour passed so freaking fast.
Thanks man! I totally agree with you, its crazy how much feeling just a soundtrack can cause.
People who use the Last of Us as a emotional hugbox and then cry about Part II are manchildren
Your videos are great man. u gonna do the red dead series in the future? I think it would be really great for your style of video
It would be a huge project lol. Currently I'm just doing these in my free time and idk how a 50 hour game cut into a video would go. If I could find a way to make it not super long I totally would!
I wish I could experience this game for the first time again
Same :/
Definitely one of the best ps games
For sure!
one of my favorite little parts of this game is the name at sam and henry's hideout, in one of the conference rooms, that is basically a slow motion breakdown of how the city fell to/became hunters: through scared democracy. horrifying
Hm i never really noticed, thats cool though
These videos just be too good
Omg so true
TLOU and it's sequel are the greatest games ever made (behind only Great Escape on the C64). Gameplay isn't perfect but it is fast, fluid and fun, yet the stories are unmatched in gaming. Both are true works of art.
I totally agree
Just finished a 3rd play through. Honestly, that was the only way I could truly understand the decisions made in TLOU2. Wtf was Ellie thinking letting Abby go? After playing this and really trying to understand how each character perceives their situation, it all comes together much more nicely. TLOU2 still got some major problems though. 8mo prego = savage warrior. Just realizing you maybe prego with morning sickness = almost got our main character killed. The best part, the 8mo prego chick is way later in the game ⁉️. I’ll stop this rant before it gets too far
Yep when you go back to the first game the second game makes a lot more sense
Yeah their procedures definitely weren't ideal for what they were trying to accomplish
and part 2 made me love these characters even more. which I didn't think was possible
Yep!
Thank you so much for your hard work on this, I really hope you make a video for Part 2
Thanks, in the future!

@@magmalecreme no problem man. Hey and I have a little theory about the end of the game now I have played the second game buuuut I like to think the fireflies would have fucked up the cure.
