  • This video describes various observation and auditing techniques for facilities to incorporate into their hand hygiene program to improve adherence. Credible data are obtained through a variety of methods, often used together. Direct overt observation evaluates demonstrations of skill where lapses can be corrected immediately. Indirect covert observation is often called the “Secret Shopper” method, and mechanisms should be put in place to address non-adherence immediately following a lapse in hand cleaning. Other methods include automated data collection for continuous monitoring and conducting routine environmental evaluations of the functionality of hand cleaning supplies. Communicating the results back to the frontline is a critical part of engaging personnel, improving adherence, and preventing infections. The Hand Hygiene Foundations Learning Series consists of four videos and was developed in partnership with the American Hospital Association (AHA).
