- In April 2024 we walked from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela as a family of five.
Camino Update Day #18
We keep telling the kids that every level of discomfort they unlock now will grow their ability to push through future difficulty. Last night the heat didn’t work, or they chose not to turn it on, and we all slept in our hiking clothes and jackets, on top of the disposable sheets we bought at the albergue. At 3 am one child was in bed with Crystal. Another was in mine at 5 am. It was a fine and pleasant misery…but we unlocked a level!
We tried to walk off the cold, which only partly works. We stopped for coffee and that helped some as well. Finally about 10 am the sun started to warm us and we could feel our appendages again.
We stopped a couple times throughout the day, meeting people from all over. The rest of the day was just getting in our kilometers. Twenty-six for today.
We arrived at our village, Mansilla de las Mulas, and raided the local grocery store. Ate lunch in a park and let the kids play. Amazingly they find energy whenever we pass a park!
Got into our apartment and turned the heat up, and washed all of our clothing. I was in need of some laundry facilities after sleeping in my hiking clothes two nights in a row.
Number of days in a row I have worn the same hiking pants: 18
Number of times I have washed said pants: Today is the first.
Number of steps: 36,634
Next stop: La Virgen del Camino
Percentage Completed: 57.6%
