Rig Rundown: Greta Van Fleet [2021]

- Few rock bands have made a bigger splash over the past five years than Greta Van Fleet. Since their first full-length, From the Fires, won a Grammy for Best Rock Album, Jake and Sam Kiszka have constantly dug deeper to expand their band’s sonic scope. GVF’s latest, The Battle at Garden’s Gate, is packed with deep, nuanced sounds that all need to be created live by a classic rock-trio lineup with an amazing singer. The guitar-and-bass-playing team of brothers showed PG the gear they use to make it happen, at a recent tour stop at the FirstBank Amphitheater in Franklin, Tennessee. And special thanks to Greta Van Fleet’s tech Bryan Manley for helping with the details.

Also, I wonder what they would do with something like Lachy Doley's whammy clav?
EDIT: just realized he left the rhodes on while hitting the Hammond, which means that the hammond was actually sympathetically microphonically driving the rhodes - that's pretty cool. Like a tuned spring multi-reverb, listen to that freakin decay.
Rock 'n roll 2.0 💙💜🦋💞
Good interview
Love John. Very Likable and genuine
I have an incredible sounding 61 Les Paul. How do I contact Jake?
I knew things were getting serious when Sam’s shoes came off.
I figured they were getting more chill, honestly. :-)
Sam is just awesome.
I think we need another updated rundown w greta 😌
Yep! For sure!
It’s the same. Lol

They did one more recently for there show in Indianapolis
Stereo-panned wah is definitely a massive win on the tone front.
Right!
Say what you will about this band, but stereo panned wah is so freaking cool.
Where can we get this stereo-panned wah pedal?
@@dustintakk i looked for stereo wah pedals but couldn't find the crybaby or vox. Yamaha made one back in the day & u might be able to find it on ebay or reverb. Ernieball makes a panning volume pedal. Hopefully somebody starts making stereo wah pedals again
Oh... it translated. hahahaha, seriously though, it did in my studio phones.
There's nothing more inspiring than to be able to both see and hear the passion a musician has for their art. On top of their shared passion, Sam and Jake are truly so talented and knowledgeable.
you have entered the church of the magic tone monsters
Ok S imp 🤣🤣🤣
@@rgarcia4412 honestly yeah
especially when they're a talentless hack.
@@veronicahall2151 pathetic
I've never seen a band mature as fast as this one. I'm an old man and these kids are the best rock and roll band in the world right now. Can't wait to see them live.
They have really come a long way and have an awesome sound. I can’t wait to see them play live as well
I am 58...and have tickets for July 27th!!!! Yay!!!!..I agree...can't wait!!!! :)
Absolutely. I'm in my late 30's and harboured reservations about them for years, due to the obvious comparisons to a certain British Rock band, but at this point they have well and truly won me over. These kids are unbelievably talented and their understanding of harmony and songwriting is very sophisticated given their age.
What I appreciate the most though, is that so many younger people really appreciate this band and the style of music they are playing. I'd call it 'wholesome' compared to the rest of the anti-human trash that's out there, and thus it gives me hope for the future of music in general.
@@loritucker9621did you like the show?
@@mayorofthenonsenseoh yeah what an issue eh, a young band resembling another great one. Just say you were jealous, it makes you come across as more intelligent
I'm really impressed by how well they've reproduced the sounds from the album, especially the organ and mellotron. It would have been easy to add backing tracks, but seeing him switch keyboards and then jump over to the bass is really authentic and cool.
Knowing how these guys are there's NO SHOT they're probably ever gonna be playing to a click, let alone using backing tracks.
It’s almost like they’re copying exactly what John Paul Jones did with Zeppelin…
Was near front row for their recent tour and they do use a backing track
@@reidsweeney2618 LOL so pathetic.
@@reidsweeney2618 no they don't. Quit lying.
No doubt, Jake is an awesome guitarist, but Sam's technological comprehension of his keyboards simply floors me!
In short; These guys are GREAT!
10:32 Broken Bells (guitar)
11:53 Safari Song (guitar)
13:40 Built By Nations (guitar)
16:40 Trip The Light Fantastic (guitar)
20:57 Built By Natios (bass)

27:04 My Way Soon (bass)
32:14 Heat Above (organ)
35:17 The Barbarians (mellotron)
36:55 Age of Man (mellotron)
built by nations was the dopest one 🫶🏻
Aww, how sweet
😁🥰
Medalla de honor para ti
you’re amazing 🙏
Safari sang has a wicked sound 🤟
this video could have been 8 hours long and i'd have watched the whole thing. i honestly know next to nothing about the technical aspects of making music, but jake and sam are so passionate and knowledgeable it's nothing short of hypnotic to listen to them talk about their craft.
I couldn't have said it better.
Rick Beato should interview them!
Ya they are it was a real great watch and run down .. and don’t worry about what you don’t know there are a few knowbody s in the comments to know everything for everyone in the world … just let them tell you …. As they insist on doing here
One thing I love about John is that he is so enthusiastic that the musicians in the rig rundown go from being a bit serious and awkward at first to just smiling and having a great time by the end. It’s like two buddies just jamming.
no doubt, it's so much better than someone just trying to get a mic in their face and a quick answer out of their mouth; his interviews always feel like some dude that came to chill after the bar and is psyched about your new epiphone with you. it makes me want to see a parody where he just comes to check out some kid's bedroom practice set-up
It’s incredible how accurate the sound is replicated. It’s straight from the album
I used to have the number two. Sold it to Chicago music exchange who I think indirectly passed it on to him. So cool! That was a great guitar.
How long did u have it? Did you play it much?
@@franksumser9985 I had it for a few months. Didn’t like the tremolo unit so I sold it. Really great example of the model, though!
Cool. His number 1 doesn't even have the tremalo unit hooked up
@@franksumser9985 Yeah, I think that’s what most folks do with these. I think I decided that I liked the lyre tailpiece on the 64 is better so I went hunting for one of those
That's cool! Also... Reverend guitars fuggin rule!!
Premier Guitar, please do an updated rig rundown with the band! So much more has evolved since then and I would love to see it broken down once again. Love the series!
Boy, these kids have really won me over. This is definitely one of the best Rig Rundowns I’ve ever seen. Love the creativity and actually hearing Jake play some measurable parts to demo his set up.
I absolutely love hearing Jake & Sam talk about everything. I don’t know much about music technicalities but he explains it in a way that really makes sense!
Jake and Josh get most of the love in the fandom, as the talented guitarist, who have played around with guitars since he was three and the twin-brother who backed him up, but you can clearly see here how talented and impactful Sam’s playing is.
He’s the guy they pulled into the garage when he came home from school because they needed a bass-player in their little set-up, and then he evolved to become so much more.
The respect for these guys need to be destributed more evenly, cause you simply can’t build up songs with this sound without each of them really knowing their craft.
Hats of to Sam
crazy to see how much they’ve improved and changed in just a few years
They are humble enough to learn from others they admire. Josh was wise to get voice lessons so he will endure.
What can I say? The GVF haters are missing out on so much awesome music. These guys are fantastic.
So sad that this is true... Amazing live band... I've seen them 4x over the years and the progression of each band member is amazing to see. I always say people hating on them are missing out on a fn sick band.
@@MaddiesDaddy27 True. Danny for example went from a decent drummer to an absolute beast in just 2-3 years.
@@David_Solyom Exactly.
@@MaddiesDaddy27 Not really.
@@David_Solyom I caught them live once, they sre very good live but I have absolutely zero desire to listen to any of their records because none of the songs grab me (for obvious reasons). Fingers crossed they finally find their sound on the next one
nothing I love more than sam's bass-playing faces!
I don't care that this was 2 year's ago, this was great!!! I do not play guitar but am fascinated by it, & always wanted to learn but was a bit intimidated. At 11 or 12 a friend's brother gave me a few drum lessons because I was always fondling his drum kit. This after probably 5 years of begging my parents for piano lessons. They said no because we didn't have a piano at home. Illogical to me. So I've considered myself a drummer since 12. Then, a couple year's ago I'm at my best friend's place & he's got so many instruments. A lady came over that I had heard about - a kick ass drummer. She jumps on the drum kit, my friend has his Les Paul out, & the lady tells me to pick up the bass. 'Nah. I'm not a bassist. And apparently, I'm not a drummer either, but I appreciate great music!!!' Again she says, 'Pick up the bass'. And then again. So damn, I picked up the bass. I didn't see, but she had started recording. I was so scared & nervous that John Paul Jones would hear me all the way across the pond & swoop in & grab the bass out of my hands!!! After a couple song's &then just jammin, we sounded pretty damned good! I went into that experience with absolutely no confidence that I had any spark musically, whatsoever. And I'm very happy to say that I was wrong. It took a couple month's, but my friend & I headed down to Guitar Center in Sacramento & he bought me a Fender Squire jazz bass & a Rumble 15 amp. I'm still learning of course. And I'll probably just play at home & with friends, but I seriously appreciate Sam, because he also didn't want to do it at first, & had to be waylayed by his brother's. So I get it!!!
I've had a lot of superb band's as 'My Favorite band!' before. But GVF has blown them ALL out of the water. When 'Starcatcher' came out, I also bought another new release, & it was a band I worshiped. Since that day, I've probably listened to the other maybe 5 -7 time's. I have no clue how many times I've listened to the whole GVF catalog! I love them so much, they all play numerous instruments, they know their music histories & who did what, & they know their camp's. (My friend who bought me my bass has 2 gigantic Marshall amps with the tubes. What SOUND!!!!!
Speaking of sound, when Jake was showing - which peddle was it now- where the sound bounces back & forth , left to right - my phone picked that up incredibly well & it sounded so sweet. I've always loved that experience at a concert.
These guys are so incredibly talented & I understand so much more now after watching this. Especially about what haven't we done & what rules can we break? I LOVE that, because I've always been a rule breaker. So keep ona rockin, rockin me baby.
LONG MAY YOU ROCK GRETA VAN FLEET!!!!! 💋
This kid makes me smile. He's a true guitarist and tone crafter keeping the art alive. God bless him.
It's amazing to see Jake's enthusiasm and joy when he talks to us about his music, his guitar ... to see him change expression when he starts playing ... wonderful young men, and great musicians..❤️
It’s “interesting” 😂
As a previous drug addict, by a minute or 2 in I was fully convinced he's using (im assuming coke). Could be wrong but takes one to know one. look at the amount of time he scratches his nose. He's still huge into his gear but im thinking its a bit more right now
@@felkikid take it easy 🤣 not saying they don’t have their fun but highly doubt he’s drugged up like that. But ya never know
@@tylervancho1516 Im not saying im positive but that looks exactly like everyone ive done coke with looks like, and im sure I looked the same trying to be subtle lol
I love how even in a sound demo he plays with passion
I love how you can clearly see how passionate they are about what they do! I love those guys and their music.
That is one serious rig.. ✌🏻⚡️
We want you to opening for Greta Van Fleet when your album comes out!
Yeah, but that POS Guitar won't play in tune.😄
I ditto that Matthew.
That’s what I’m saying. And his 61’ LP sounds great too!”
Update Jake was voted the best Rock guitarist and best solo of the year. Drummer won best drummer. So Suck it haters.
The ending makes a strong argument for classiest Rig Rundown, ever.
Thats why love live music. I can actually feel the vibrations in my belly. Im getting too old for live concerts now but Im so thankful I have those experiences. This band has a nostalgic sound but is innovative at the same time. Brilliant.
After watching theres gear run downs I've become very interested in this band and especially the guitarist. This kid is a genius! He not only is extremely creative, but he knows how to use his gear to the fullest and it sounds great.
When i heard the effect live at 13:45 I had no idea it was coming from the guitar. So cool
It was IMPRESSIVE!!!
"You win! This is the coolest rig ever!" So how many of these interviews did this guy do and yet he's impressed! 👏👏👏
Music made and played by musicians who are genuinely excited by what they do. Nothing better than that, especially when it translates to the listener/viewer. Awesome!
These guys really have their shit together on every level.
Jakes tip for finding and learning 3 random riffs and then joining them all together is very helpful.
I’m a 51 year old man and I want Sam to be my friend. What a cool kid!
JAKEY & SAM
geetarbube You prefer the younger boys?
That sweeping wah sounded amazing. Whoever recorded this, thanks for keeping the pan. It sounded great on my Rokit 5 speakers.
The cut to Sam has me absolutely geeking
Old souls trapped in young bodies for our enjoyment. These youngsters have great depth. I am truly amazed. I like all the members but Sam is so multi talented. I know what it's like to play bass, synth and bass pedals. Loved it and was overwhelmed all at the same time. GVF=AWESOME!!
Just one component at a time of Greta is amazing and then when they combine it all together they make Sonic miracles. But I truly believe it all starts with Jake and his ability to create hooks and his endless pursuit of subtle sounds that he can make with his guitar and set up.
I am in LOVE with the isolated tracks!!!!!
Kid is the modern icon for old school analog rock. Keep it up and entire generation of young players are now trying to be Jake, and I love it
The “talk back” at 13:46 is insane! I would love to be able to hear a version of BBN with this being much more prevalent.
Also it reminds me of RDR2 lol
SAMEEEE
These kids are so impressive. AWESOME musicians, that still don't seem take themselves too seriously. I dig 'em.
They seem so down to earth without any big egos. I love it.
Yeah so down to earth that they wear $300 white t-shirts
@@robroilen4441 Was referring to their attitudes and personality traits. Not their clothing. Wearing expensive clothing doesn't make them arrogant asses.
@@RsSquier51 lol yeah okay keep thinking that people who wear absurdly expensive clothing are "down to earth without any big egos". They're happy to keep taking your money.

I have limited guitar and bass knowledge, but the Kiszka’s are clearly so passionate about what they do that I’m here watching all 40 minutes despite being clueless. I LOVE the interviewer as well, he has great chemistry with the guys in both Rig Rundown’s they’ve done!!
Love the cocktail ending! The sense of humour is one more of their appeal. The intelligence runs deep in this band. ❤
It's honestly awesome watching how far Jake and Sam have come, man, they're definitely damn talented young guys and here's for their long and prosperous career
I could listen to these boys talk about music all day
Real rig… I love that he just does what he wants and is so young. Breath of fresh air.
Damn Jake has improved so much this band is growing
I just dig John Bohlinger. "Yeah, man, that's sooo cool, dude, awesome, so cool, man!" He cracks me up. Keep it up, bro! So cool, dude!
I like him as well; he comes across as a very nice down to earth guy.
Coolest guy ever... he deserves a drink every time he visits a band!
Agreed, it’s obvious he’s just being himself.
Gotta say, John has a great job, more power to him.
He a good Interview, he let Jake talk....
Surely we get an updated rig rundown with Jake and Sam Kiszka for the Starcatcher tour?!
i love that john is just as interested in bass as he is guitar. same right here buddy love it!
These guys are true and passionate musicians, I am so glad I discovered this band and this channel! Thank you!
That stereo Wah sounds fantastic. Great band. I've seen them perform live in NYC (Summer 2019) - they are for Real !!!
What a nice guy Jake is. Happy and so enthusiastic to show his licks. Fabulous
If this video was 2 weeks long I would watch it every second of it and then watch it again
Jake has the pick of destiny and Greta is truly epic
I gotta admit , that wah was damn cool . brought a smile on my face
This was so damn cool. Jake might have taken the spot as one of my most favorite guitarists and will love to continue to watch him perfect his craft.

Such a happy face interview this is. They both really seem to be enjoying themselves, the experience, the conversation they are have with each other, the public/viewers. A sweet moment. ‘How cool!’ 😂🙃🙂
Im 19 and just started playing guitar, and there really isn’t a lick of musical talent in my family, so it’s honestly overwhelming to see the scope and range of knowledge these guys have on music. They have an understanding of music technology and music itself that I can’t even think to grasp yet. It’s incredible to hear them talk about it and know how much goes into their music. But omg it makes me feel like there is so so much I don’t know yet
im 20 and have been playing for about 5 years and believe me there still so much to learn about music even the best don’t know everything.
Welcome to this beautiful world!

This is one of the best ones yet! GVF are fun people with amazing talent!
Great Rig Rundown! Can you make a new one over the course of the Starcatcher tour? I am dying get more information about Jake‘s new guitars and Sam‘s Rickenbacker!
I own a 61 sg, since 82, you don't see those very often. Its wonderful!
Love listening to a top musician talk the nuances of his craft. Even when I don't always follow all of it.
sam is so cute and nerdy but in the best way possible. especially with the “thank you my good sir” hahaha
I'm very glad I was plugged into stereo speakers when I watched this
listening to the stero wah with headphones is just...the coolest man
Glad these fellas are around doing what they do. They are really carrying the torch for the vintage sounds. Piss on the haters.
Love his interviews. He's so stoked all the time.
I've seen GVF on several other channels, Wings of Pegasus, Musician's Hall of Fame, and of course their own channel. I've always been well impressed. You've taken them to another level. I can see why Led Zeppelin took inspiration from them. They deserve it.
I love the sound of a B3 organ… it’s one of my favorite sounds in the world.
Sam took his shoes off to play the keyboards with the foot parts…respect!😂
Dear John
What a great presentation. Love these guys and thank you so much for covering the keyboard rig. At the beginning I was thinking "oh damn, I wish this show would cover the keyboard rig" but then you did. Other keyboard channels just don't do it like Rig Rundown. I hope that covering a few classic keyboard rigs becomes a thing for Rig Rundown. Bravo.
best bands use keyboards ( zeppelin...floyd..boston..toto...foreigner...journey...genesis..elp..doors....etc..) I'd love GVF to use them more and more even synths
Jake in his favorite blue pants ❤️
I love this! So happy to see younger generation keeping rock ALIVE! They're a great band.
Man that 60s les Paul is probably the sickest guitar I ve ever see
we need a new video with them!! sam's using different bass guitars and jake's also using other guitars!!
Saw them recently for the first time and they sounded great live. Stereo wah! Madness!
This is so awesome! I am smiling just seeing their entusiasm. And Jake seems like a fantastic guy. And - it all sounds great!
Thanks for putting a smile on my face greta van fleet, I went out and bought a couple of albums and love it. It's got all that nice vintage rock character we all know and love but doing what they do. Good on you guys!!
Please continue to include keyboards in your future rundowns! Not a huge fan of this band, but every time I hear Sam get into his nerd zone, I can't help but go along for the ride.
Holy shit that tone! It’s like this kid time traveled straight from the late 60’s/early 70’s to remind us what great tone really is all about.
Amazing to see how far these kids have come from where they started. They have all gotten so much better. Great band and they are just getting going.
Usually bands "get going" in their garage and playing basements, not doing world tours
I have a new level of respect for these young artists! Very talented indeed!!
Thanks John. Very well done. Sam just blows me away. Talented, witty. Seems like a cool guy.
The way that Sam says thank you twenty first century makes me think he is an eternal being who has played music through the ages 😂
So great to see the technique and tech of one of my favorite rock guitarists! Rock on!
Age of Man is one of GVF best songs .. actually one of the best songs ever!!! that keyboard makes it for me ......
It's so f@ckin awesome to see Rock live on in GVF. Incredible artists...incredible guitars and incredible sounds @13:44! Jake slays it! And to see Sam, worship the BASS the way he does...brings goosebumps...fantastic.
It’s great how accommodating he is to this journalist, he’s still just a regular kid even with all the rockstar fame. This band has caught tons of shit over copying Zepplin, but thank God they’re here!
