Ustad Yusuf Ali Khan - Sitar
Raga Kafi - Aochar and Drut Teental Gat
    No further information available.
In the picture (l-r): Ustad Sakhawat Hussain Khan, Ustad Ilyas Khan, Ustad Yusuf Ali Khan, Zahid Khan (another sitar-playing son of Sakhawat Khansaheb who passed away at a young age). The picture was taken in the mid 1940ies in Yusuf Alis sitar workshop in Lucknow. In the upper floor of the same building Sakhawat Khansahebs family used to live during that time. The two giants were close peers exchanging musical ideas and compositions. During his long tour to Europe from 1936-39 Sakhawat Saheb even entrusted his second sons Ilyas Khansahebs musical education into the hands of Yusuf Ali Khansaheb. The shop was known to be a vibrant meeting point for musicians from near and far.

I have learned very similar phrasing of kafi in RadhikaMohan Maitra’s teaching tradition.

Thank you for preserving this music and making it assessable to anyone with internet access. I have enjoyed listening to the oldest surviving recordings of Indian classical music as well as pre 1960 music and comparing it to modern musicians. The same for western classical music as well. It’s fascinating to be able to hear the differences as opposed to relying on commentary from people who lived in the distant past descriptions of going to concerts. We are the first generation in history to have this privilege. Thanks for taking the time to post this music. I truely appreciate it

A truly beautiful rendering but it sounds like Pilu. Any comments please.

Indeed there are many interwoven shades of ragas Pilu and Deshi (both belonging to Kafi Thaat), brought on by the gayaki style of presentation.
