- Coromandel International Limited located in Ennore, Chennai has a 12,500 ton Ammonia storage tank. On 26/12/2023, 67 tons leaked from a submarine pipe. 52 ppl hospitalized. Here's what can happen if 4500 tons were to leak.
Ammonia is lethal at concentrations above 5000 ppm. Yellow band is equal to or greater than 14347 ppm. Red = 143 - 14346 ppm
With winds from NE, within 15 mins of leak, ammonia will spread SW. Areas under yellow band will experience 100% mortality. Red band = significant mortality & moderate to severe injury. Leyland & 6,800-unit (38000 people) Slum Clearance tenements in 100% mortality zone.
Within 30-45 mins densely populated areas of Manali, Thiruvottiyur, Kodungaiyur will come under red band - death and moderate to severe injury. However, ground-level effects will be mitigated as plume rises.
Within 1 hour, red ammonia cloud moves to cover Anna Nagar, Koyambedu, Periamet etc. If wind shifts slightly from to blow from north to south instead of from Northeast, Teynampet, Adyar, Gopalapuram, Mylapore, Guindy etc will be affected.
In less than 2 hours, the plume would have spread to Airport, Ramapuram, Mugalivakkam. Ground-level concentrations may have reduced considerably, but people in high-rise buildings may still suffer as ammonia floats up.
On 26/12/2023 we saw what small leak (67 tons) did. This model shows what 4500 tons can do. 12500 ton leak would be devastating. Cant be managed by emergency response. Siting is unjust. #EnnoreGasLeak
