"People get murdered because they're polite. Most people would rather not be impolite and keep themselves out of mortal danger than potentially hurt someone else's feelings." Nailed it.

Deferring and conforming to the expectations of whoever you consider to be in charge is not the same as being polite. People are rude all day. Just not to the hand that feeds them.

Very deep. Especially for women. Society always expects women to be polite, even when they’re the victim. I loved that in the film Room with Brie Larson, her and the mother fighting about maybe if she wasn’t so nice she wouldn’t have helped the man with his dog that ended up kidnapping and raping her. Very deep.

There's that great line in the remake of "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" where Stellan Skarsgård invites Daniel Craig to come into the house after he's caught him creeping around. Later, once he's tied him up he asks why he didn't trust his instincts. "It's hard to believe the fear of offending may be stronger than the fear of pain, but you know what: it is."

it's why you should learn how to be disagreeable. One woman who almost got raped by Cosby started cursing him out the second she felt something was wrong. He started acting offended and said she shouldn't use such bad language but reality was it actually scared him enough to call her a cab, because he sensed if he went through with it she wasn't the type that would hide it.
Of course that is an extreme situation but in general being disagreeable will take you further in life.

problem is most of the time you're not completely 100% sure that you're in mortal danger, or in this case the producer is making that move. most of the time it's not that black and white. so if you react like u think u should have it could be an overreaction. people's judgements of situations can be flawed too so it's not like it's such an easy thing to always read.

Even after Weinstein, men in power will start a witchhunt against you, there are smear campaigns, victim-blaming and victim-shaming and worse yet, nobody believes a lone accuser. I don't think it's just about people being too polite to know what to do. Most of these types of stories happen to people in their youth, when it's not so much about being polite or not, as it is about simply not knowing what to do because you've never been in the situation before. If you were raised well by your parents you would probably be so shocked, you simply blank out like Charlize said. As you grow and gain experience about the world and the people in it, you come to realizations about what's going on and how to handle it so you can call the person out on it later like she did.

Yeah it's fight or flight syndrome. It's where traumas come from after the scenario. We learn to love ourselves in the end and try and accept the situation that was not possible to control.

    • @ohwellwhateverr
      @ohwellwhateverr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

I think people forget that there's a third response, besides fight or flight. It's what Charlize described, you freeze. It's where the mind shuts down and dissociates from the body and paralyses itself. It happens to many victims of rape, assault, violent attack, and unfortunately it's a biological reflex which causes more harm than it resolves.

Swear to God.. the "OMG is this really happening?" is so terrible true! I experienced something similar in an airplane like 15 years ago.. Guy sitting on my side was drinking a lot and after a while he started putting his hands on my legs.. The first time I was so in shock I thought I had imagined things! But he persisted and ended up touching my thights and private parts. After the third time I
got up and changed places on the plane. He kept looking at me. That was the scary part. If this had happened today I would make sure he was arrested but back then (naive) I ended up thinking that the whole situation was somehow my fault (and I was in a very old pair of jeans and a Polo T-shirt (nothing that could remotely look sexy). Sometimes I still thinks about it and I hate myself for not speaking up and asking

If women don't talk about this stuff right away, when it happened, but after a few years, or even when they said it right away but the man is famous and woman is not, than many people thinks that she is making this up "to ruin the poor mans career". So it's easier not to say the names ;p Of course there are women who fabricate such things. That's why the real victims suffer from it ... Because of that nobody believes them even if they tell the truth.

At 19, Theron flew to Los Angeles, on a one-way ticket her mother bought for her, intending to work in the film industry.During the initial months there, she went to a Hollywood Boulevard bank to cash a check her mother had sent to help with the rent. When the teller refused to cash it, Theron engaged in a shouting match with him. Upon seeing this, talent agent John Crosby, waiting behind her, handed her his business card and subsequently introduced her to casting agents and also an acting school. She later fired him as her manager after he kept sending her scripts for films similar to Showgirls and Species

Howard hit the nail right on the head at at 3:08. I went to audition for a very well-known orchestra conductor when I was 13 or 14, and it was all on the up and up: during business hours, in his studio. He sat very close to next to me at the piano, even in a separate chair. And I remember as if it were yesterday, in the middle of the 1st movement of the 3rd Chopin Ballade I felt something rubbiing on the inside of my right leg, inches below my crotch. My whole body went numb and I couldn't think. I froze. I kept playing, and at the end of the piece II jumped up, excused myelf and left in a daze. It took me years to sort out what had happened. I wish now that I had punched him, but at the time I was paralysed and wanted to be polite...

Here is the problem. Yeah the douchebag put his hand on her knee. It is inappropriate and she left just as she should. Since the beginning of time men have been attracted to women and show it in many ways. Some, like this ass, use their power and it worked on many women I'm sure. But women are not made of glass. We have voices and hands and we use them and move on. You go tell a young girl who has been gang raped that "poor Charlize is traumatized' no. Shes not! She is pissed but not traumatized. We can not blur the lines. I'm tired of women being victimized for the slightest of things

I would guess the lady setting up the meeting did know. Having worked w a “handsy” boss - I saw how the whole office turned the other way w his behavior. Reminds me of Ghislaine recruiting girls..
Weird to see Seth so supportive. Yet we all know who his bestie is -

Seth is mostly offended that she had a Ford Fiesta.

I love how empathetic Howard immediately is to her situation instead of judging or questioning her for how she handled it

Every decent looking 18 yr old girl can tell you-that story is so true! Let's name names, don't protect the predators-that only means more girls will suffer.

Ironic that Howard Stern has Charlize Theron on his couch in the studio, on the freaking Howard Stern Show, and still has more class than these Hollywood producers.

1:19 Of course Seth doesn't understand how a man can be sexy to a woman. I'm sure Brad Pitt doesn't agree with that statement.
