    Sapp440 is correct! I worked at the Clark Street Plant and Fleetwood Assembly. The quality was aweful. I was a repairman for the Body and Trim Assembly. That's why they closed these plants. It took an average of 73 man hours to build that rear drive Cadillac and Toyota was building their cars in less than 30 hours. If the quality was there, these plants would still be operating. Furthermore, the multiple storied plants built in the early 20th century were inefficient for storage and delivery of parts to final assembly. They were built at a time in cities with little space for industry but lots of cheap labor.

      The vehicles were built at two different plants. The Fleetwood Body Plant built the bodies from the firewall back and trucked them in trailers over to the Clark Street Plant for final assembly. What you're seeing is the "body drop" that was at the Clark Street Plant after the body was shipped over to Clark Street. Yes, the frame, engine, header panel and grille were all assembled at Clark Street and the body was dropped as you see it. The fenders and hood were bolted on and fitted afterward once the body was on the car. The fenders and hood were attached later after the body drop. Clark Street had an engine manufacturing facility, a chrome plant and stamping plant. The biggest problem was getting the paint to match the body and the fenders/hood. They were painted at two different places and the paint match was often a little off from the front of tge car and the doors back. Also, these were not modern Base Coat/Clear Coat. These cars were painted in old fashioned enamel. Cadillac switched from lacquered paint to enamel years before in order to save labor on rubbing and polishing the lacquer paint jobs.

    So....Is this why the front pulley FELL OFF of my dad's one year old Chevrolet Chevette while he was driving up I-75 in Michigan in 1981? I have NEVER owned a general motors product and I seriously doubt I ever will-
    Dad got to a phone and me and my mom picked him up that morning, the car was towed to the local Chever-Lay dealer where we bought it. The car we got there in? A "Bimini Beige" 1977 Cadillac Coupe de Ville d'Elegance [B-body] with a 425 cubic inch/7.0 liter four barrel carbed motor.
    That needed 16 seconds to reach 60 mph....
    Hello~?

    • @christianmotley262
      @christianmotley262 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were geared extremely high, that makes for a long zero to sixty. I've owned around 50 Buicks, countless other GMs with a few Ford's and Mopars...some good, some bad, a few were the best handling ever.

    • @Flies2FLL
      @Flies2FLL 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christianmotley262 The 1977 Cadillac Coupe de Ville d'elegance that my mom owned was a 425 four barrel that made all of 180 hp for it's 4300 pound bulk. The 2.23 gear set was indeed a problem for this car, but really, it was the low compression along with a cam that gave a power peak at 3200 rpm that hampered performance. The funny thing about this ride was while it was SLOW, it towed my parent's 26 foot Argosy trailer through the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina with little trouble, despite the tall axle ratio. That means it had a lot of low end torque.
      -One of the problems with this car was that my electrical engineer father decided shortly after he bought it that he wasn't willing to pay the 2 cents per gallon more for the unleaded fuel this new car required, so he modified the fuel filler to accept leaded fuel. With the catalytic converters still installed. Did I mention that he has a bachelor's degree in engineering? What~?
      Irregardless of my dad's "frugality", it was still a shining example of the stupidity of the general motors corporation, and American car companies in general, which wish to build a PROFIT first and a CAR second.

    So many of us - me included - complain that Cadillac doesn't make full-sized sedans any more. Both the XTS and the CT6 are no longer in production, and by my experience (rentals during visits to the States) they were quite competent luxury cruisers. The reason they were canceled? People simply didn't buy 'em.

    • @straightpipediesel
      @straightpipediesel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn't just the XTS, it was sales of all large sedans. Cadillac sales are a tiny fraction of what they need to sustain a platform. GM quit Europe and Australia which ended Holden/Opel/Vauxhall sedan sales, then fleet sales died: Taxis needed SUVs to fit a wheelchair, police demanded bigger cars after the Crown Vic fires, and GM decided to tone down the low-margin rental car market.
