My last apartment in Japan was 375 ft.²/35 m². I thought it was tiny when I looked at it through American eyes. I spent eight years there and grew into it. You realize what’s important and what is clutter. It worked out quite well. In the long run. I like the tension shelving. I had one of those in my toilet room above the door. It made great storage space. I had a crate on it that was fairly heavy. All things considered, and it never shifted a bit. Getting used to a small kitchen was tough. I ended up with a cart that I had the microwave on the main shelf and the toaster oven up above. You make do with what you have! I can’t imagine how you fit six of you into that apartment size. Is it a 4LDK? Wow!

日本は土地が狭いのでやはり住宅の狭いです。昔からその狭い部屋に工夫して収納します。その収納を考えるのが圧倒的に主婦です。だからそのような主婦を、敬意を込めて収納博士と呼んでいます。主婦は結構いろいろ考えています。突っ張り棒なんて日本だけで、米国ではこのような道具は考えられないでしょうね。今日の動画を見てルースママさんは、収納博士号取得されましたね（笑）収納のスキルに感心しました。Good Job👍

How much weight does the tension rods hold? Also are the ceilings lower in Japan?
It varies a lot - from about 3-15 kilos. And yes, the ceilings are low!

畳の上にはあまり重いものは置かない方が良いと思います。賃貸の場合、畳が凹んだり、傷が付いたりして管理会社によっては退去時に交換代金を請求される場合がありますので注意が必要です。どうしても家具を置きたい場合は畳に直接触れないようにクッションを挟むなど工夫すると良いでしょう。
6人家族で4LDKだと和室に物を置かないのは難しいだろうし、長期で住む予定なら退去時の畳交換費用は必要経費として住んでる間は住みやすいように使った方が生活の満足度は上がるんじゃないかな？
