  • Somnieng Houern has touched the lives of thousands in his native Cambodia. The Harvard-educated former monk shares his personal story of survival, why he believes hope is the most powerful force in the world and what he’s doing to bring that power to the most vulnerable.
Venerable Somnieng was formerly the second head monk of Wat Damnak Temple and a co-founder of Life and Hope Association. Somnieng completed his masters degree in public administration at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government.
In 2014 Somnieng handed his Executive Director role to Venerable Loeurm as he sought to serve the broader Cambodian people in a more public role. Somnieng continues to serve Wat Damnak Temple as a senior advisor.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I'm a Christian and learning a lot from guest speaker Monks on TH-cam. One principle is observation. Don't get upset, rather observe and consider. And kindness can activate hope within a person. Thank you

    Some important points:
    - The power of hope, and the power of kindness that energises the hope, can transform your life
    - If we can do something simple with our kindness, we can energise people and bring people hope
Great talk, sir. Thank you for all that you do ♥️

"These are the greatest of all things eternal. Faith, love, and Hope. If I can identify what went wrong in my own personal life where I was happy and now I am not is that I am self involved and egotistical. I must then even when it is not convinient to love and be humble and to believe in myself. To reactivate this part of myself and to force myself to shoe my true and real devotion to love and faith and to reject any notion that we should always do what is pleasurable. We should always do what is right.

God damn. I stay alive because I hope I'll find happiness. I want to find love and be happy. I've seen my parents not be happy and I hope to enjoy life. hope is the most powerful thing in the world.
religion, *the most powerful force in the world* would be nothing without hope.
I want to die, but hope is so essential to why I'm still alive.
    hope is blind and terrifying.

You said that not many Cambodian people were invited to TedTalks. It is true, but some days in the future. I will complete my dream by organizing the stadium talk show to the world and invite TedTalk founder to give the speech. I do not need to go to the TedTalks.

I tend to believe that hope is even superior to the law of attraction. The law of attraction tends to get us to believe things that may not even be real and may cause us anxiety whereas hope is a kind of optimistic wistfulness that has soul in it and helps us to progress in a soulful manner towards accomplishing our goals.

    A STORY OF HOPE
A long time ago, there was an Inuit family high up in the
Arctic. It was a terrible year for hunting, and for months the
weather was extremely cold. There were very few animals to
hunt in the area, and so the family decided they would have to
travel south in search of better hunting grounds. When they
started their journey south, the walk became long and hard, and
they had very little food to eat. Their grandmother was very old
and slowing them down. It was a tradition in those days to
leave the old folks behind in hopes that the rest of the family
might survive. So they said their goodbyes and left her standing
alone on the ice. Later that day, a polar bear saw her and started
to hunt her down, but she was too slow to escape. As the polar
bear got close to her, she took off her big fur mitt and put it on
the end of her narwhal walking stick. She then stood there very
still and quiet, making no sound or movement. As the polar
bear got within feet of her, it opened its mouth to bite her, and
at that very moment, she shoved the mitten down the polar
bear’s throat choking him. It wasn’t able to breathe, and it died.
She walked all day and through the night and was able to catch
up with her family, and she told them what had happened.
They went back to the polar bear, and it gave them enough food
to survive until the spring. So you see, there is always hope,
even in the very last moments of certain death, there is always a
chance things can get better. There is always hope because there
    is always God.
... There is a book written by Tony Tymstra titled: What is possible? What is impossible? And What is probable? Proof that God exits. Here is a small chapter you might find interesting....the book is on amazon

This talk did not provide hope as I hoped it would. More of an ad for an organization he has been greatly helped by. I have compassion for his story and people in need of the organization for which he speaks- but I’m let down by the fact that I’m walking away from listening to the whole talk with no more hope than when I began listening.
