  • Today I'm out creating portraits on the Lumix GH5 with a Leica 42.5 f/1.2 Nocticron. I turn to this lens often because of it's incredibly tight aperture and depth of field. Often it's thought of as a low light lens, which is of course true. However, today I'm using it to soak in natural / REAL lens flare from the sun. At f/1.2 this lens offers tack sharp photographs with a beautiful soft roll-off and glow to the highlights. Micro 4/3's cameras with fast prime lenses can create absolutely gorgeous photographs that compete with the best of them. I love them for their auto-focus speed and accuracy as well as for their small lightweight footprint which makes them great for travel, portraits, weddings, or events. Every camera and lens offers it's own unique set of features, looks, and options. For me it's all about the right combination for the job, and also what makes the joy of photography flow as beautifully as our childhood imaginations.

Great shots Charles. Really like the shooting into the sun look.

Thanks John... Yeah the flare really adds an abstract feeling.

@@artistcharlesmaring I also have GH5 but I didn't know that it can take this kind of images. 😔

FilmGrade Absolutely the GH5 is one of my favorite systems of all time for weddings and portraits. Yes it’s amazing for video, but also remarkably fast, nimble, and capable:.

What a brilliant set of images Charles showing off the lens and your talent. I confess I've been slightly disappointed with this lens when I've seen it in reviews compared to the Oly 45mm f1.2 which shocked me as a love the pana leica lenses generally .. but maybe that was because they were shooting on Olympus bodies I really don't know because here in your video its truly sublime. All the best Rich

Thanks so much for your kindness Richard. Yeah this is one of my favorite lenses still to date in my gear bag.

I thought that lens would be better, for the price...it lacks too much contrast shooting against the sun....maybe its because the micro 4 3 sensor...

Our tastes are in different places, and that's ok... Contrast is optional IMO... I shot in RAW, and I actually pulled it back in Lightroom a bit along with the clarity slider. Makes it more abstract IMO, which my clients adore. We sell a lot of enormous wall portraits on metal with this kind of imagery.

Best lens I've ever used, hands down. It's a beautiful match to the G9 and works for just about anything. Such special character and soul and yet super sharp with good contrast and micro contrast wide open. Now, having switched to the L-Mount, I am waiting for an 85-90 in the same style :-)

I agree.. This lens made me pursue photography. I just bought an S5 and wonder how the S 85mm/1.4 compares. Can't seem to find any comparisons. But the nocticron is a special beast.
