Not many bands have a vocalist that can sustain half a song a capella
Ahhh I'm not even Canadian, why does this song make me cry!???
As the man said, don't need to be Canadian to feel it. Stans writing is amazing, and this cover is a great one.
I'm portuguese, my people were explorers until there was no corner left to be first to see, and I get shills every time.
Absolutely agree i was tearing up😥
Same!! Not Canadian and I get goosebumps every time I hear it. Brings a tear to my eye and I'm not sure why, but such a powerful, awesome song. I must hear the Stan Rogers version now.
It's a sad story, you'd have to be made of stone to not feel something inside when it's spoken of. Also incredible songwriting helps.
I got the chills too. It's nice finally seeing a Canadian reactor react to this because it hits different. Also cool that this was all filmed in or around Vancouver, from what I can tell as a Vancouverite. I know for sure the venue she starts in and the concert shots are all from the venue that most metal bands play when they come to Vancouver unless they're BIG time
The Rickshaw! I can't say I've ever been there, I'm afraid. The Commodore is my most frequented venue in the area...I hope things open up somewhat soonish so I might have a chance to see them there!
@@Elviolli Yep, The Rickshaw! I've only been to the Commodore once when Demons & Wizards and Tyr played there.
Mate. It hits us brits too. Franklin and Crozier and their men are part of our shared history.
And i forgot to say. Stan Rogers is an authentic great. Sorely missed.
I know I'm late, but watch the channel Captain Facebeard. The male reactor, during the reaction, actually teared up, as he is Canadian, from New Brunswick.
His words: "I'm a pirate, dude. You just took shanty, rubbed a bit of power metal in it, and a little bit of speed metal, and you can have all my babies. All the babies. Hell, take an arm if you like."
It made the guy emotional, because it's like Ray Charles doing his cover of America, the Beautiful. It's why I understand the Canadian emotion connected to this song.
Brit posted a video explaining all the action and what it all means...it's really interesting. It explains the purpose behind the changes in clothes and people. Stuff I never "got" watching the actual video.
And if anyone wants a hint before they watch the explanation video from Brittney, watch the ring on her left hand ;)
RIP Stan
That being said, I did not expect that much drive coming out of a folk song. That was badass!
Try the Headstones cover of Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
It is my honest opinion that folk songs were always meant to be metal songs

Not ashamed to say that this song brought tears to my eyes. Growing up on the East coast, Stan's music was a constant in my youth, and still is today. He had a way with lyrics that could paint a picture in your mind, that was so vibrant, you could smell it. I can't help but think that Stan is looking down, with a big East Coast smile on his face. Well done UTA, well done.
When I first heard this song, it was a cover from the band The Longest Johns. I looked up the OG version and fell in love with it even more so. The spirit of exploration and vagabond is in me, and I always picture myself walking through lands while listening to this song.
the first time i heard this song it hit me like a ton of bricks.. her voice, the lyrics.. its soulfull and incredible! and when that power metal kicks in! ohh its so freaking gooood!!!! I still get chills and sometimes a little tear in my eye.. its a beautiful song, and this version is magnificent! makes me wish i were Canadian.
I have seen a few of your reactions, and now you got a new sub ;)
The video is a dig into Rick and Morty Style parallel dimensions cause the band members are huge Rick and Morty fans, you can identify the different versions of Brittney on their rings, every version has a different ring. Brittney explains it in a video. According to International Pirate Laws you can become an honorary Canadian by listening to this song while wrestling a bear covered in maple syrup.
You 100% need to react to “Time Stands Still” by them! Her voice in the song is beyond insane! The song portrays her vocal abilities
fuck yeah!!!!!!!!!!!
do it!!!!!!!1
I am not Canadian (though I planned to move there at one point) but I find this particular version absolutely amazing. Well done AA.
It made me emotional seeing you trying to hold it together and stay objective. Great reaction Ken.
Whoaa, the thing you said about doing so many shows and sort of waking up... Wow, btdt with stage plays and musicals. On stage, stage crew, and work in the booth. Like deja vu squared.
Did I see Ken get a little misty-eyed there?? 😁
IMMORTAL IS MORE THAN A NAME!
NORTHWEST PASSAGE
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there it was said to lie
The sea route to the Orient for which so many died
Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
In the footsteps of brave Kelso, where his ""sea of flowers"" began
Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain
And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
To race the roaring Fraser to the sea
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
How then am I so different from the first men through this way
Like them I left a settled life, I threw it all away
To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
To find there but the road back home again
Thanks Robert Just for including the lyrics!
I mean how great is this band?? Literally my favorite band on the planet, I’m so glad I found them right around the release of Apex so I got to experience 2 absolutely flawless albums, could not be more in love with them
YES! I was hoping you'd do this one!
We salute you, Dear Old Stan!
Great reaction again, could you do UTA new song Legacy next, its an awesome song
I second this suggestion
Have you heard "Earth and Ashes?"
listen, again, to "Legacy."
you missed something....
@@jayb7775 Can’t you see in my face I’m his son, his earth and ash
@@morgmatar2117 yep. and...😭😭😭
@@jayb7775 Yeah i did notice the Earth and Ashes and Apex nods in the song
Ever since I heard this I've really, really wanted to hear UtA cover "Barrett's Privateers". That was always a pub favourite in my 20s (most of the 1990s) that could get everyone in the place singing along.
Another UTA cover of a Canadian band/song is Heartless World originale by Teaze.
Another great Vid, thanks Ken! I definitely recommend checking out Brittney's explanation video because it gives you an insight to how they think about things:
th-cam.com/video/Nscn3QT6tZo/w-d-xo.html
Thanks VorAbaddon I will check that out.
Btw, Voiceplay has their new cover of Carry On My Wayward Son just released. Very cool take on it.
Enjoyed this reaction very much!
Hello Larry Haynes, thanks for commenting - I have to check that out.
"You don't have to be Canadian to truly appreciate the song"! Tell me about it! Got chills and shivers each and every time since I first ever listened to the original. Greetz from Athens, GR!
its almost a rite of passage for Canadian bands to cover Stan Rogers
American, but this song (stans version), helped me get through abandonment and divorce. The gong in a new expedition in life, and in the end finding myself again (path back home) thing really helped be find my northwest passage
as a fellow canuck, and a Stan Rogers lover, it was fun watch Ken's face almost exactly mirror mine the first time i heard this version
Thank you for your positive and respectful reaction to the Archers.
More and more I become a member of the UTA family and it means, you are part my family too.
We are all connected, years ago I adopted a Wolfpack in Banff because every living individual is important for us.
Wish you all the best and go on 🙏🏻
We feel fired up toward the end. The way she sings this is so compelling!
Hoping they do Barrett's Privateers.
I saw Stan at the Mariposa Festival in Toronto the year before he died. This was a tear-jerker.
i think they just gave that stan rogers and canada all the justice and then some
Hi. Thanks for sharing. Living in Victoria, I have never heard this song or this band. Has a Celtic undertone. Liking the simplicity of the a cappella part the best as the remainder has too much business for my ears. Likely sounds good live.
The sound at a power metal concert hits you like raging waves...
@@luisnunes2010 Hi. Thanks for your reply. Have to admit that I have never been to a metal concert but can for a short time appreciate the dominance of the vocal and instrument skills creating the raging waves.
@@DbSwEg Well, this Blind Guardian video can give a good idea. The acoustic song you'll love. 😉🔥🔥🔥🔥
th-cam.com/video/i-IcX_bccFc/w-d-xo.html
@@luisnunes2010 Hey, thanks for the link to this band. Wow... that's a lot of people that can actually sing on tune. Yes, really liked the Bard ballad but the Viking ancestry in me thoroughly enjoyed Valhalla. Take no prisoners lol. ;)
@@DbSwEg Metal is a fellowship. |,,| 😁 |,,|
If the viking stuff appeals to you, Manowar and Ensiferum are a must. Helloween, Angra, Gamma Ray and Rhapsody of Fire, are great too.
Brittney sings a song in OPERA you might want to react to!
Great reaction Ken. Big smoke been a while since I heard that term miss the island at times.
Im not canadian but this song made me chill the 1st time i heard, so powerful
Have seen them many times live, she has such a powerful voice. Thank you for this!
Hi Ken great job with your reaction to Unleash The Archers Cover of North West Passage . The Highway in the video look like the coquihalla Highway in Vancouver .l seen the Show Highway throw Hell on the weather channel about the tow completely Whom works on it.
Thanks Ken, for featuring a band from our home town.
LOVE this rendition! The band is fantastic as always. In his 2017 book "A Newfoundlander in Canada: Always Going Somewhere, Always Coming Home", Alan Doyle, formerly of Great Big Sea, talks about the challenges of touring Canada. Highly recommend the read.
Great big sea was the missed must hear for those south of the st Lawrence
Well I'm not Canadian and I don't know the band at all but I am tearing up listening to the lyrics😥
Her voice is amazing!!🤍
They have another good cover of another Canadian artist....Sunglasses @ Night from Corey Hart....you should check it out.
Since you did this one you have to do "Heartless World" by UTA, it is wonderful.
Great great big sea song as well. Old folk song done by many.
Subscribed! Love seeing reactions to this song, especially from a fellow Canadian. I had the privilege of meeting Brittney a few years back and I can honestly say, there is one of the most genuinely nice people behind that massively badass voice.
You Said it - I hope to see them live someday and hopefully meet the band.
By far my fave ver of this song
Impostor syndrome is the term you were looking for!
Bingo!
I love how her licorice just slowly falls. lol! It gets dark at the end though, those different versions of herself and one of them kills the other.
This song (not this version specifically) reminds me of my Uncle. He was a Canadian of Scottish descent and very much a musical guru (he played piano for decades) and while he never sang this song around me, it always makes me remember him and the fond memories. Miss you, Uncle Bill!
Waking up from autopilot not knowing you were in it. So haunting and real
Hi Ken, I'm a recent subscriber. I'm really enjoying your journey of discovery through music that's new to you, a lot of which is also new to me. Thanks for the great content!
You should react to Legacy by Unleash the Archers. It's off their latest album, Abyss, that came out last year. The song is amazing and I think you'll really appreciate the video as well.
Dear I love u videos... Please, Pay Attention, Unleash of Archers will be the Savior of Heavy Metal in the World!!!! Great hug... Leo Barzi (from Brazil)
I subscribed... several months ago. :) Spiritbox. That is all. Get to know these amazing Vancouver islanders!!
I remember watching my son sing this song with the BC Boys Choir many times. I believe one time was w/ Ken too!
Ooooh, a hell of a great song and a great reaction as usual Ken, I have a suggestion if you enjoy Stan Rogers, perhaps check out the song Dear Old Stan by The Dreadnoughts? It's a tribute to the man myth and legend, and a good introduction to them. Might be fun to hear a more punk/folk band who were inspired by such a folk singer.
They have acustic version of NP. I'm Polish and I don't know what's the true meaning of this song but is f... awsom. I didn't know its cover thanks I'm going to original.
Love it.
This would have been on my list of "Songs Least Likely to Work as a Metal Cover" but somehow - (and if someone put a gun to my head and told me there had to be a metal cover of a Stan Rogers song, my first thought would probably have been Barrett's Privateers...)
3:15 its called cultural appreciation. anyone of any background can appreciate the struggles and success of other people and the art that is used to honor that history.
As a Nova Scotian I approve of this... LoL!!!
yo. I subscribed down in texas :)
GM coach great reaction, i hope one day u May react to "given up - Linkin park" greetings from nicaragua, huge fan of your work, still waiting for another rammstein reaction btw
So in an interview that Brit did, the video is basically about an evil Brittney traveling to other dimensions to take over the life of a different Brittney. And the Brittney seeing people change in front of her (alpha Brittney) is seeing those dimensions converge. Think Rick and Morty with all the different Ricks and Mortys. They are massive nerds and love all sorts of nerdy little things that have to do with time travel and what not, so it makes sense for them to do it in a video
Beautiful love it
I'm sad i only recently found northwest passage.
Hi Ken! I loved your reactions. Please, hear Crown Lands, canadian band. Looks like Rush with Led Zeppelin. Is so amazing. ❤ Rio-Brazil
There is a fantastic version of the probably most known Irish folk song: The Drunken Sailor.
th-cam.com/video/1X8T1MonrPs/w-d-xo.html
Together with many other great German musicians from In Extremo, Russkaja, Subway to Sally, Letzte Instanz, Versengold, Me Irish Bastard, .... Fiddler's Green have created the ultimate version of this song.
Fiddlers Green are a very popular Irish Speed Folk band from Germany that is well known and highly accepted in Ireland as well.
Dudeeeee. You have to do small town Titans version of the Grinch. That vocalist is insane
I subscribed. Hello.
Have you looked at "Cleanse the Bloodline" or "Faster than Light" yet? Also, I love the poster above the piano!
React a Angra - carry on ... is power metal too (Singer maestro Andre Matos)
Andre Matos is a power metal singer from Brazil and has a lot of fans because the two best known metal bands in the country he was part of !! Another thing is that Angra's guitarist is Kiko who is MEGADETH's current guitarist!
(Andre Matos vocal)
Angra - Carry on
Angra - Time
Angra - Wuthering Heights
SHAMAN - Fairy Tale
(another vocal = Rafael Bittencourt)
ANGRA - Bleeding Heart
ANGRA - Rebirth
ANGRA - New Era
If you react to these songs, Brazilian fans will start showing up here. Brazilians are very fond of Angra and Shaman, mainly because Andre Matos died in 2019. In Brazil, Metal Day is celebrated on the day he died. Andre was a singer, composer, conductor, producer and pianist.
This song wasn't about any mental metaphors of being beside yourself. It is actually about the multiverse of what could have been (Britney playing guitar or her as a fan at a show). All the flashing scenes where members are in different locations are different possibilities of different realities. Their old bass player who was no longer with the band when this song came out even made a few appearances in the video to show a "what if" he never left the band. I'm also fairly certain the tombstone had names of past members of the band. 🤘😊🤘
Listen to Stan Roger's original as well as this awesome cover. Powerful.
7:10 is that where you realized how much you're looking forward to being in a crowd singing this chorus back to them? Because I am. It's gonna be 🔥
According to Brittney, the video was going for a kind of Rick and Morty multiverse thing. 😅
I’m not a fan of the video but love their cover
I sang this one so many times... Where i come from it's just a sea shanty. I didn't even know that the author was known 0.0
More UTA. Oh, Canada! 🇨🇦
Basically, the video is trying to show what would happen if an alternate dimension Britney is searching through other dimensions to find a version of her life that she prefers, once she finds it she kills off the Brittney from that dimension and takes over. I believe the Brittney that gets killed off at the end is being portrayed as starting to see the other dimensions starting to bleed through into her own, which is why at some times people swap clothes, old band members show up in the video, she sees band members playing other instruments, etc...
Interesting, Thanks for the insight into this video.
@@KenLavigne She has a video explaining it if you want to do a quick search.
I subscribed! Also, you should review the "I'll Make a Man out of You" cover by Dan Vasc.
I won't spoil it, but he does one of the most incredible vocal things I've ever seen at the end and.... I can *guarantee* you'll be amazed.

Never learned voice training, scream technique anything, but always amazing live and studio, but he knew when he not get a coach he will never go back on stage and studio. Now his sound is better then ever, really interesting man. Check him out maybe u can take a older video and then a new one for maybe check out the diffrents? Cheers from swiss
Ken did you ever figure out that this video was representing Unleash the Archers in a multiverse of many possible lives for them. Did you catch the ending where the Evil version of Britney kills the one from our timeline?
After hearing this song for the first time just a few days, am I right in thinking Northwest Passage is to Canadians what Country Roads is to West Virginians?
Yes.
Re Canadian bands, I would love to see your take on Gordon Lightfoot (maybe Song on a Winter's Night or Don Quixote) and on the Rankin Family.

Can you please react to Dorota Osinska’s “Calling You” The Voice Poland audition?! She’s fantastic!
Your comment about the band being from Victoria reminded me of another band from Victoria I like. Not sure if you’re familiar with 3 Inches of Blood. I got to see them once and the thing that stuck with me is that the singer sounds like 2 different people when he talks vs singing. Very interesting style and I would love to hear your thoughts on his signing.
