    My grandparents (mainly grandma, born 1918, for flowers) used old wood soda and stock boxes for seed starting! I had forgotten all about that until last year when I saw a woman from somewhere in Europe on TH-cam using them. Of course they did not make the blocks- just straight soil wood trays…
    So sweet with your daughter! Please let her know a lot of us out here are trying to save the planet for her!!❤

    I used stainless steel lasagna pans before I got the Bootstrap Farmer trays. I hate to use plastic, but these new plastic trays should last my lifetime so at least I am not using trays and cells that will last only a few years. My grandparents used cedar for seed trays and harvest bins. Some of them are still around after 60 or more years. They actually had a 1/8" gap between the boards for drainage. The grow house had dirt floors so they were not worried about water seepage. So glad to see you show us how it was done pre-plastic!

    How precious! Cora is such a fun “ buddy” We have Shetland Sheep so I am curious to see how the wool lined box fares. 😊
    I love that Cora will let you live with her when you’re old. My second little girl loved planting with me when she was young and now she is helping me start a flower farm and wedding venue in my old age (58🤪) and she is building her house next door. What more could a mom want!!

      Only downside of metal is when they’re in the sun-the trays can heat up quite a bit and burn seedlings :(

    It feels like full circle...we used to use wood and the environmental push was to "Save the Trees," don't use wood products! And plastic flourished. Now it's back to all natural wood products, but I foresee a shortage of cedar in our future. Our society seems to fixate on one product until the source is depleted. 🤪

    • @Blossomandbranch
      @Blossomandbranch  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      Yeah, we forget though that it doesn’t have to be sourced new. These were reused from wood beds.

    I think felted/fulled old wool garments would work well as a capilary mat replacement even for folks still using plastic trays & pots... Wouldn't be dye free but would be reusing something that would otherwise go to waste & could be cut to size. One small step towards sustainablity.

    Love your chat with Cora ❤️
    Question for you about soil-blocking: how well does it handle plants with sensitive taproots, like milkweeds? I’m starting a bunch of milkweeds this year, using deep plastic plug trays, which of course is not ideal. But I notice all of your soil blocks are pretty shallow. Is it possible to get deeper blocks? Is it even necessary? Is it better to just plant in place?
