The device is designed to sit over the edge of your cup, with the three prongs inside the mug.
The outer prongs are longer than the middle prong.
When you pour your hot water into the cup/mug the device will beep and vibrate when the water level is high enough to touch them, at this point you can stop pouring.
If you would like to add milk or cold water, you can leave the device in and then add your extra liquid. You will then hear a different beep, and the vibration will be at a different rate, again at this point you can stop pouring.
The device also has two magnets on the opposite side of the device to the prongs, so that you can put it on the fridge ready for the next use.
