I understand that the coil spring can fail and shoot out in the direction of the operator. Hence the cage. My 50 is a 1920 no cage. On my list to make one. I’m using a 1910 modern but like the lil giant for compact ness. Have fun!
Kent ,I agree with you. the guard screens as for protecting the operator if and when the springs fails. I have heard comments from people about have shards of the spring in-bed into their bodies.

Thank you for the input. That is probably the wiser course of action, and if new breaker disconnects weren’t exorbitantly expensive I’d have done that. I found a used disconnect with the lever that I wanted for real cheap, so I used it.

This was less about solving a particular problem, and more about looking for any problems that I’d want solved by taking it all apart and putting it back together. More like a maintenance check up than anything.

I believe your crosshead is upside down, older hammer’s have it up and the newer versions with the different ram guides have it down.
I’m not sure that’s true, In the original schematics and ads for the Little Giant company, the crosshead is as I have it.
Always great to see an old tool put back to use.

I’d go no fuse disconnect and rely on the breaker from the panel to break if it does
