The couplers in question are buckeye couplers. As you stated, on the real thing they'd join the coaches together. In real life, they'd swing from a hanging position to a horizontal position. In the hung position, they'd reveal a traditional hook for a screwlink coupling to hook on to.

The most expensive coach I own cost me 25 pounds which is a Bachmann Parcel Van the cheapest is a Lima Trans Pennine coach which cost me two pounds off the local car boot . I wouldn't want to pay 60 pounds for a coach .Hornbys Southern Region coaches are nice the Bullied coaches have a few unusual features if you want something different.
@@petercole2092 Hi Peter, I still remember my first train set. A Lima Class 33 in BR Blue with yellow ends and 3 passenger coaches (Circa 1978). Steel track which wasn’t very good and blackened very quickly - then out with the track cleaning rubber)) One day I looked through the hole in the adjoining doors at each end of the coach as was amazed to see that Lima had modelled the corridors to each compartment inside the coach. You know looking back (excuse the pun) they were pretty good for the time. I picked up a couple of Class 33’s by Lima when I got back into the hobby and they are still a joy to own and run. Never let you down either. Going over the points and dirty track and just doesn’t care))
