Von Shepard was a tremendous Wing-back, but he blew out his knee badly and was never the same. The same thing happened to Jason "Ramble" Gamble at Split-end. Both those guys could run 4.3 before the injures. There isn't much footage of Doug DuBose on TH-cam or anywhere else. So I was happy to find this game. Rod Smith was an excellent receiver for us and Punt return guy. I remember him well. If I recall correctly Clayton had probably his best game here throwing the football. MaCathorn probably should have been a I-Back though. Great speed and moves.
Television host Jon Kelley ("Extra," "Funny You Should Ask," and other shows) is #40 for Nebraska. He returned kick offs and played some running back near the end of the game.
Jon Kelley should have played allot more. Are you aware that he actually broke Irving Frayer's school record in the athletic Index? I really wanted him to get more playing time. But Doug was a Junior and Miles was a Senior having missed most of his Junior year. Keith Jones would have benefited from a Redshirt year, and Jon who was a Redshirt Soph could have really blossomed as the number 3 I-Back. He was 25-30 pounds heavier than Jones! Kelley had incredible potential. Jones could have come back as a Sophomore in 1986, rather than being a very green Junior. Jones was forced into being the starter when DuBouse blew out his knee in the scrimmage the week before the season opener. DuBose would have been in the thick of the Heisman Trophy race I still believe, if he had been able to play his Senior year.
DuBose fumbled the ball! Man, I get frustrated watching Nebraska lose the football when they were almost certainly going to score. Even watching a game from 38 years ago! DuBose really modeled his running style after Rozier, even though Mike was a good 25 pounds heavier. DuBose still tried to run with the same ferocity that Mike did.

This Bob Lee has some chops. I think he’s going places.

Refs tried their hardest to beat Nebraska but Nebraska was too good for them. What an awful job by the officials.
