history of berhampur famous maa budhi thakurani jatra--
The Thakurani jatra festival has started. It is a biennial festival celebrated in Berhampur, Ganjam district, Odhisa.
During the festival, Goddess Budhi Thakurani is taken from the main temple at Thakurani Temple Street to her temporary abode at Desibehera Street, where she stays till the festival ends.
According to historians, first Thakurani Yatra was celebrated in April, 1779. The hereditary head of the festival is Desibhera, the head of Dera community. Dera is a community of weavers of Berhampur.
Berhampur is famous for its silk sarees and handloom cloth. The Berhampur patta sari and joda (dhoti) has been accorded with GI tag.
As per tradition, on the first day of the festival, Desibehera’s wife goes to the Thakurani temple with floral offerings. The offered flower, which falls from the head of the deity, is then brought back as the representative of the deity to the makeshift temple and is put in a ‘ghatam’ along with eight other ghatams.
On the last day, the ‘ghatams’ return to the main temple in a large procession.
BERHAMPUR: The holy pole for the famous biennial Thakurani Jatra of Berhampur was installed at Desibehera street on Friday night. This marked the beginning of the preparations for the Jatra that will be held from April 2 to May
Durga Prasad Desibehera, the chief organiser and the hereditary head of Thakurani Jatra festival, accompanied by hundreds of devotees, reached the main temple of the Goddess and after rituals, installed the pole at Desibehera street.
