So smart to get this on record before you go to Airstream.

One of the directors of Airstream was recently talking about the popularity of these units (mostly due to all the social media buzz about RVing) and said: "We are building them as fast as we can" in an effort to meet demand. That is NEVER a good thing!

There are 3 ways to build something; good, fast and cheap. You can only have 3. If you build it fast and good, it won't be cheap. If you build it cheap and good, it won't be cheap. If you build it fast and cheap, it won't be good.

True! We had the same discoloring after our 1st year...5 years later a soft spot...short story, leak from outside shower. We never saw water but had to replace the entire floor...6K - Insurance said normal wear & tear and paid zero. Get it fixed under warranty - disconnect the outside shower!

Thanks for the honest sharing of your experience. It tells a lot about Airstream's quality control these days. Airstream seems to live off of their faded fame from the past and is no longer so much an innovator in RV world. With the same money, look for other alternatives with better build quality. Take care of yourselves and the baby!

Airstreams are lovely but I recently watched a walk through by a rep who really knows the product and there were so many things that were a risk to the end user or could be broken by the end user or were just bad design when they mentioned the awning at the end that was one. They need to raise their game because they’re selling a supposedly high end product but the quality is not there.

Because your sink does not have sealant around it, water is probably going into the drawer and making the stains from your spices.

    • @ssranon
      @ssranon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Was thinking the same. Any water that's left outside the edge of the sink may wick down between the sink and the countertop and drip into the drawer below. Sealing the sink would be one option, but in the interim you'll want to keep the area around the sink dry.

I have owned many different trailers over the years including an Airstream which I still use regularly and its like new at 12 years old. Like anything else there is normal wear and tear with usage. I am pretty handy at most things but stuff like rivets and leaks take it back to the dealer and they can handle it and will honor the warranty.

    • @sueswister9135
      @sueswister9135 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Actually most airstreamers we know to purchase a rivet gun (cheap) as it's extremely common to lose some here and there and super easy to replace. We would never make a trip to the dealer just for a popped rivet. Newbies, listen up! A popped rivet has no bearing on the quality or structural integrity of the airstream. There are over 4000 of them!

Thanks for sharing. I do not full time but have owned an Airstream for 8 years. Basically any RV has issues if you use them and some if you don't! They are a labor of love. Your list has four third party issues that is equipment on any RV- failures of fan, stove, blind, batteries, etc. The other items are more "Airstream" issues- rivets, sink, drawer, floor. The most concerning to me is the floor issue. Hopefully it is not anything too bad.

      @bobbysharp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

In 2013 Thor bought Airstream and doubled their production from 30 units a month to 60. I don't know where these units are, I only see a couple on the highway. And never see them in campgrounds. Our 1988 Airstream is supper well built and as spacious as a new 90k unit. Yes we have "Remodeled" the inside but it is way better than these new units. Folks that see it can't believe it's 33 years old. We've put about 4k into it after the purchase so all in we're at 16k. Similar units are selling for double that. Keep it stored out of the sun, this will really help the clear stay on longer. Popping rivets is an ongoing thing, by a hand rivet gun and keep some rivets on hand. Just a nature of the beast. So if Airstream is a high level of quality imagine how crappy non-Airstream campers are.

Dan. I spent 16 years researching and then bought one. Airstreams hold their value unlike other travel trailers. Size does matter. Mine is a 16BR. I would get the 19 or 22 if I had the choice. But since I have a 16 the trade in value is great! Need to get a vehicle that can tow it. So, keep that in mind. The issues in the video are valid, but more cosmetic. But easily fixable. Just as long as structurally and mechanically it doesn't have issues.

The floor "stain" looks like where you walk as if your walking on it rubbed off a coating of the floor. It stopped at the very point your feet were when you sat on the bed. Definitely great you have a TH-cam channel when you talk to Airstream; they'll have some pressure on them. Please update us -- even if you don't have your rig back. The results of my quiz was not one of their large Travel Trailers but the Sport. Tracy rowan in the 2020 airstream owners manual page 3-8 paragraph title effects of prolonged occupancy (your trailer was designed primarily for recreational use and short -term occupancy .) Page 2.2 titled chemical sensitivity and ventilation talks about off-gassing of formaldehyde this is important if you have children or have a history of lung problems. Formaldehyde is used in carpet , linoleum , plywood etc. Airstream states ventilation before you go while traveling etc. All this info is in the 2020 owner manual . Wouldn't it be nice if people would do some research before open their mouth and talk crap.

@@tracyrowan6460 This conversation prompted me to Google "Airstream Owners Manual" and they're all online at www.airstream.com/owners/manuals/.
The 2021 Caravel manual is currently available here: www.airstream.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/2021-Caravel-Owners-Manual.pdf
As David describes, from the Caravel manual, page 2-2, there is a section on ventilation.
Also, on page 3-7 there is a section titled "Extended Stay" while on page 3-9 there is a bolded note:
      * Your trailer is not designed, nor intended, for
permanent housing. Use of this product for long-term or permanent occupancy may lead to premature deterioration of structure, interior finishes, fabrics, carpeting, and drapes. Damage or deterioration due to long-term occupancy may not be considered normal, and may, under the terms of the warranty, constitute misuse, abuse, or neglect, and may therefore reduce the warranty protection. *
It's certainly worth considering this stuff if planning to use one for long periods.

Regarding you not feeling well. From your description it looks like a typical “air conditioning disease”, I experienced it many time in various parts of the world.
When you run air conditioner a lot in humid climate, some sort of bacteria start to develop in the air conditioner and they make you feel sick exactly as you described. The only way to get rid of it is to treat the air conditioning cooling unit with special disinfecting chemicals. In theory that should be done with any air conditioning unit at least once a year, but most people and manufacturers don’t do it

Wow I was really excited to purchase one, but now I want to know if they are going to warranty your issues, the one that really scared me was the Propane issue that you had. Thank you for all your guidance and wisdom about your trip.

Nice job on the review... My wife and I are looking at similar but most likely something with the split bathroom size. I would say that your findings are all valid no-doubt and those that downplay any of that, well just do not understand what quality is supposed to mean... especially when you are getting into an Airstream. (The comments about spare rivets.... general need to know how to fix things in general. Sorry I claim the BS card there. Would someone say the same when they pay 50K for a car. no). The stain on the floor, and the fumes from the ref area would be an immediate need to return and/or replace though... Rivets on coming undone is poor quality control on AS part. You would hope AS takes a look at things like this and attempts to fix. Good luck, you did it right!

Sorry to hear about the troubles you've had with your Caravel Airstream. Otherwise, it seems like a nice trailer. And it was a well done video. Thanks for uploading.

Fast forward to 2:22 if you want to see their list.
    Fan: Its working.
2 rivets loose. Not a big deal
Stove gaskets. Not seeing this a a world ender
    Sink is moving.
A drawer moisture issue. Looks like something spilled inside. Owner issue
Stain on the floor. Possibly from the AC unit use or overuse? Need a rug.
Bathroom exhaust doesn't work. Check the fuse?
bathroom pull down blind doesn't work. Maybe because the shower has something to do with it?
Batteries life span issue. Don't know if they are living in this 25/8 while boondocking? Shore power to recharge?
Sick? Frig or propane tank fumes? Sounds like a leak.
    Awning hook missing.
Not seeing an issue with your Caravel. Easily fixable. I have a 2016 is great shape if you want to trade.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience!
If you get another travel trailer and use the stock flooded / wet or AGM batteries again - I'd suggest never letting them drop below 50% unless there's an emergency. Otherwise you compromise their lifespan and reduce the overall charge capacity.
If you were to replace them with lithium they don't have that issue, but colder temperatures can cause charging problems.

Wow. I am sorry to hear that you two have had so much trouble. Hope you get things repaired and safe.
Not sure if you’ve had other trailers, but when compared to many, Airstream is a better build overall. I mean, it doesn’t hold a candle to Living Vehicle (LV)... but those are $$$$$$.

Thanks for a good, honest video. RV quality in general is poor; sorry to hear that Airstream is just as bad as the rest. Traveling, living in an RV is a constant maintenance and repair task. Components seem to be chosen from lowest cost bidders, not for durability and, quality. They look great on the showroom, and start rattling apart the first mile down the road The engineering is very poor considering that these are mobile units that do take a bearing down the road; it starts with the frame and suspension systems; light weight is chosen over ruggedness. No, they don’t have to be built with the strength of a tank or armored personnel carrier, but neither should they be built a child’s dollhouse. Diligently perform your daily/weekly maintenance; even in the best of RVs this is necessary if you want to save yourselves headaches. RV manufacturers need to do their part, but so do owners.%

It sounds like this is an adventure and not a lifestyle for you...but still, learn to fix.

completely agree - this goes for any type of RV. one year my electric tongue jack stopped working while at a campsite - another year i had a blowout on the highway, another time had the refrigerator stop working which was a fuse issue, fixing rivets is common and can be done by the owner - none of these were specific to the airstream itself (except the rivets) but the point is be prepared for anything, read the airstream and dometic manual several times, carry spare parts/fuses/extinguisher, make sure you know how to use the jack to access the spare tire or manually turn the tongue, etc.

Floor mold, propane leak, rivet and battery are big issues. Others can be fixed in an hour. Good luck.

  • @rachaele349

We had exactly the same problem with the propane in our 2018 Sport (predecessor to Bambi and Caravel). Fortunately we could smell the propane before we had symptoms (so sorry!). We took it in also. The issue was with a broken Dometic cooktop. It took our dealer 3 or 4 different cooktops to get one that didn’t do the same thing. Seems to be a Dometic, not Airstream issue.

That was all very interesting ...., that was a lot of small things that "together" is a big deal. We might replace our floor with some actual wood flooring

  • @airdad5383

Most of these are pretty minor issues, easy to fix. Propane leak is a bigger issue as well as the floor.

Don't pay an arm and a leg for a brand new RV or fancy name brand. We purchased a 28' 7 years ago that didn't have anywhere near this amount of problems for probably 1/4-1/3 of the cost of this RV. It's still working well today. Our batteries were purchased back then and we haven't replaced them yet. Never had a gas leak, air conditioning works. Nothing overly fancy in ours. I suggest buying newer used because the bugs will be worked out. We did have a leak in our outdoor kitchen last year but that was a problem with winterizing and a fairly easy fix.

That’s a bummer. Hopefully you’ll get the technical issues sorted out. Seeing those pano windows in the morning and working at the dinette gotta be a big plus. I’m looking at small trailers like this for travel and work and I can’t see living in a small windowless shell. Keep us up to date on your progress.

If I recall, those batteries are not Lithium, the fact you are draining them below 50% (AGM batteries) you will kill the lifespan of the battery. Hence why it doesn’t last long for you.
