    @Andalbanon I bought turface for the first time last year for the citrus. I'll probably try it for this years cuttings. I've been trying different ratios of the perlite and vermiculite with the latter being a smaller portion of the mix. I've seen someone with the idea of creating an inner circle of just perlite around the cutting and than an outer circle of a soil mix so you don't have to disturb the roots by repotting. The perlite is dryer and then the roots grow out into the soil.

    @4GreenEarth2 I've seen videos about making willow water for rooting hormone and I think I've heard that honey has anti-fungal properties. I don't know about putting honey on the cuttings though. I know I've never seen honey go bad, only crystalize which you can just reverse by reheating in a water bath.

    Thanks. I wish I had enough figs at once to make preserves. I bought some in at the grocery store last year. It's pretty expensive. I ate the whole jar and then slept all day coming down off the sugar high.

    @JoshTheCichlid Hi, Cuttings are usually taken of lignified wood. That's just the growth that has hardened off and has the bark type look. That happens when colder weather occurs and the tree goes dormant. You can take green cuttings and just try putting them in a bottle of water. Put a small baggie over the top to increase humidity. I just tried that with a small branch that broke off and I had those little roots forming after around 5 days. Transfer to a lite soil mix.

    I've got a new favorite that I got reintroduced to from left field. I was watching a video on making compost tea and one ingredient was unsulphured molasses, so I bought some. I never liked molasses because I don't like black licorice and I thought they tasted the same. Now I'm having it by the spoonful and on toast, muffins, in tea. I guess taste buds change over time.

    @stufado1 W'ell, Its probably been dormant for a while if you are in MA so you can take cuttings now and start them if you want. I ordered some and will received and start cuttings the end of Feb. You can also try doing an air layer in the spring which will give you a more mature plant quicker.

    That's a large enough container for the new cutting and maybe even next season depending on how strong a grower it is this year. I just up potted some of this years cuttings into 1 gal trade pots and they will remain in those probably thru next summer too..

    Nice video! I was reading the comments and wanted to agree with 4GreenEarth and add that the moss probably has a low pH, and that will help to suppress fungus and mold. I have a single fig that I dug up and bare-rooted at the beginning of last year. I grow it in a mix of coarse perlite, bark, and a bit of turface or pumice. I don't suggest that you necessarily root your cuttings in such a mix, but I do think that the vermiculite holds too much moisture and lacks structure and durability.

    @mrisitreal Perlite is a natural volcanic glass. When they heat it up it puffs up into that white stuff. You can use those styrofoam peanuts used for packaging or maybe some old styrofoam cups. Break them up into smaller pieces.

  • @NewEnglandgardening

    @4GreenEarth2 Hi, I've shifted over to the sphagnum moss instead of the paper towel or newspaper in the baggie method. I bought a bunch of those plastic shoe box storage containers and sandwich the cuttings between layers of moss. It's subjective but I think I had less issues with mold when using the moss. I'm still going to experiment with cuttings into direct soil after root initials form and some into the perlite/vermiculite mixes

  • @4GreenEarth2
    @4GreenEarth2 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sphagnum moss makes sense - it actually has the properties to heal and prevent stress to the plant. Also anti-fungal. Have you tried using willow bark or honey?

  • @Josh_Green44
    @Josh_Green44 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @NewEnglandgardening I would definitely favor the perlite for rooting. Being able to transplant without damaging roots is such a benefit.

  • @NewEnglandgardening
    @NewEnglandgardening  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    No, I just open up the lid for a couple of minutes each day to exchange fresh air. I open them up anyway to check on the progress of the cutting.

  • @NewEnglandgardening

    The ultimate determination is having the ripe fig along with the leaves to determine what type. At least you'll know if its a dark or green fig to start narrowing it down.

    At what stage did it fail? What was the problem? I have some wrapped and outside and will find out this spring if they made it since we've had a cold week. Some trees I'm able to get into the cellar for protection. Ideally, I'd like to have a shed to move them into. The smaller ones which are less cold tolerant at this stage I have in the lean to greenhouse.

    hello,
    I have a question on potting the fig cutting ?
    I successfully have rooted a fig cutting in a pot, but i can see one root popping out at the bottom, I just wanted to ask you whether i should be transferring it into a bigger pot. the pot it is in as about 12 inches high and 8 inches wide

    You can also add 3 small packages of strawberry jello and have strawberry fig preserves. I also mash my figs the next morning before sealing them. Because I dont like the big chunks in there. Your choice. Hope you enjoy.

    Hi there! I really enjoy watching your video clip. I am new to fig and live in N.Ireland where it rains a lot, not an ideal kind of weather for growing fig I think but I really take a liking into growing fig and would like to try propagate the cuttings I ordered online from Portugal. I started off by put the cutting straight in to the plastic cup using medium soil and petite and keep them moist in the storage box and closed the lid and open to air the cuttings every morning. They are now over a months old some cuttings have some leaves on them some just start to have green buds on them. Root wise there are plenty rood on them, I have the question when should I transfer these cuttings to the 1 gallon pot? What good indicators, roots or leaves or both that I should observe? Thank you for your advice.

    Hi, I've watched several of your videos on growing figs. I have tried a few times and failed miserably. What do you do in winter with the trees, where do you store them, and what size pots do you use for them. Thank you for posting your vids, keep up the good work.

    • @NewEnglandgardening
      @NewEnglandgardening  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sata Giuricici The main reason fig cuttings fail is over watering. Once they are in cups and placed in a humid environment like a storage bin you might have to water once a month until the leaves start to form.

  • @NewEnglandgardening

    That is too funny, I can't believe you ate the whole jar in one day. No wonder you had a sugar high. We didn't get any figs this year, no rain in Arkansas. I live in the country and have well water, so we can't water our yards or trees.

  • @NewEnglandgardening
    @NewEnglandgardening  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you see dew on the inside of the cup it has enough moisture. Perlite and vermiculite can hold water for a long time. If you have them in bins you might not need to water them for a month. It's a different story when the leaves are growing. It will start to evaporate more moisture. I think most cuttings are lost due to too much water at the rooting stage so I'd rather keep them on the dry side in a humid environment.

    After you transition the cuttings from the moss (clear shoebox) to the clear cups do you grow them under lights? I'd imagine you're doing this in the fall/ winter and it'd be to cold to bring outside.

    • @NewEnglandgardening

      It depends on the variety and the quality of the cuttings but generally you do not see anything within a week. I have cuttings that can take four weeks to show roots and longer for any growth. I currently have a cuttings that has roots but shows not sign of leafing out for a couple of months now.

    • @NewEnglandgardening
      @NewEnglandgardening  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Said Said Are you asking how long to get figs? Some cutting will even try to produce a fig while propagating them. Depending on the variety you can expect a handful of figs the second year and increasingly more as the tree matures. I had a young fig called Zingarella that produce around a dozen figs the second year. It's is very productive.

      +Sata Giuricici The best time is while the tree is still dormant but you can take cutting in the fall and store them in the fridge and start them in spring too. It depends on what zone you are in but you can really take cuttings anytime. You can also do air layering.

    It's not an easy answer. You have to find what works for you in your area. I don't know if you soil is good for growing cuttings. People in the south can have nematode problems that won't be good for starting cuttings or adult fig trees. If you have heavy clay soil that probably will not be the best for starting cuttings either. Some people live in areas where they just stick the cutting in the ground and have great success. You can experiment, try different media and see what happens
