I saw Slapshot in 91-92 and Choke handed the mic off to me for What's At Stake and let me sing the entire song. He said I sounded fucking great. He was super nice to us, I'll never forget that.
I wish I could remember the exact date, but I saw Bad Brains & Slapshot at a show at The Channel sometime during the late 1980's. There might've even been a 3rd band, but, it was awesome.
Saw Slapshot plenty over the years, but one of the absolute craziest shows I saw which was just so fun was Sam Black Church, Slapshot, and Bad Brains at the Channel. Great great show
I was there. It was amazing. Even without HR, Bad Brains we’re the greatest band in the world. Slapshot was a five-piece and was just so aggressive. And SBC, well, you just had to be there. What a show.
Totally unique voice that I’ve been a fan of for many years. The singer “makes” a HC band. Mike Judge, H.R., John Joseph, Jeff Perlin, Raybeez, Roger, Paul Bearer…
Saw them several times, starting in '92 with the Bad Brains (with Chuck Moseley) at The Channel. Love the old stories because they bring back memories of my youth..
The other day I tore off a more then two decades old layer of stickers from the tap of my local bar until I came across the very first sticker: The Slapshot logo. I left it there :)
I was at the show in Camden in November 1982 and I was totally completely in with hard-core at that point. Of course I was a Philly boy so I needed to be at that show. I think the motorcycle gang were called the ghetto riders. I lived in San Francisco for many years, and when I move back to Philly, I was the chef of this restaurant I’m one of the servers and I started to talk about that show, he was much younger, and knew about the show because he got a bootleg record of a live performance from Minor Threat, and it was called live at Buff hall, and Camden, so he gave it to me
Like him giving props to these awesome new bands coming out. Respectfully disagree with the Brains comment. The 3 times I saw them in the late 80's were mind-blowing.
Yup; Black Flag, creepy-crawling -- checks out, for the most part...Boston had some great bands: F.U.'s, Jerry's Kids, SS Decontrol, et al. Props from the Bowery ~ Nap
Slapshot was the first hardcore band I ever saw. Choke sang while holding a sawed off piece of a hockey stick, which is odd if you think about it. I'd never been to a show/ seen a pit/ seen skinheads and so forth it was a vivid experience.
If it were not for this band I would have never known the Pleasure of smashing hippies with sawed off hockey sticks...i bet Choke won't talk about that.
I enjoyed our time in the crew. I never realized that he wanted to be the singer of a hardcore band so much during those times. We never had that conversation.
Joost D. When we were kids in the 80s he had a cult of personality about him. He was "violent" "unpredictable" would beat you If you had a beer in your hand or cigarette in your mouth etc. I've talked to him several times and he was a nice man. I'm intrigued how my friends and I were essentially scared of him 25+ yrs ago.
Joost D. He hated Ray and youth of today. We saw Ray with Shelter in Boston once and Choke was stopping kids walking to the club (Bunrattys) and telling them not to see these “pathetic fucking idiots”. He could get violent at shows. Mostly to younger smaller guys getting into bands from out of state. Wouldn’t do it alone. Had his crew to back him. Bit of a cheap shot artist. I’d say choke was your classic bully.
LOL That is why I asked in the first place dumbass I'm not from the scene I don't even live in the states I don't pay attention and listen to HC music as I used to
Choke has a great sense of humor, just checkout his Instagram. I would like to know what American Skin bands he's talking about. Maybe Legion 76 or Fear City or?......
Now a days yes in my opinion, but nothing can top what the U.K. produced back in 79-80s. Upstarts, Criminal Class, Combat/Condemned 84, Last Resort, Business, Skrewdriver, Die Hards, Betrayed, Skullhead, Subculture, Vengeance, Clockwork Soldiers ect. Late 80s/early 90s American bands were pretty good too (Spirit of Oi American style comp for example.)
rightwingthug hey are you the douche bag that used to be in "any means necessary"..the shit hammerskin band from "the mean costal shores of Chatham cape cod?"...wtf..gtf out of here!
Post '85 Bad Brains rules. If you didn't like "Quickness" you have no ears. "God of love" has THE BEST reggae tunes. "Build a nation" is a kick-ass-fest start to finish. I could keep going. Haters get a clue...
(kind of insulting putting this Gavone on a NYHC segment when you take into consideration all the shit he has talked over the years about the Apple....)

Sam Black Church, Bad Brains w/Chuck Moseley (HR had lost it by then) and Slapshot. At The Channel in the winter of '91-'92... Epic show.
One of my favorite hardcore singers. He's totally got his own sound .

I would also add Anthony Comunale and Jim Williams (MP). Really memorable singers
Jerry A poison idea
one of the best yet. boston is still killing it
@Frater Simon bloodkrow butcher, they've came and went but left a few hardcore as fuck ep's
@Magus Simon vein , typecaste

What a show. Even without HR, Bad Brains were great that day. And I remember Slapshot were awesome. Who else played? SBC?
@@whitelobster1ify yup, Sam Black Church opened. I think I was homeless but had a dj staff pass for the show lol.
there needs to be an Al Barile interview
That's not going to happen.
@John Micheal It actually ended up happening. He was on my show The NYHC Chronicles LIVE! It's a great interview, check it out.

Love Choke, GREAT hardcore singer. A legend.
What's at stake was there first song I heard....Omg I still jam it to this day 2022
Bad brains were AMAZING after 1982. "Quickness" is beyond the beyond. "Build a nation" is a fantastic record; produced by Adam Yauch R.I.P.
You have the best voice in HC for me. Greets from Germany.

+1 for violent reaction
2022 and the hardcore scene is thriving in UK

This is Charlestown not boston

I dunno why people hate on th e guy so much. Then again, people want to be wole and real but get offended by lifes wake up calls and truth.

Am I the only one that thought "hey this guy is from Boston n made a song called fuck ny so why is he being interviewed for nyhc?"

A hardcore fixture from Boston, in a video about NYHC, and, where was his his favorite show? That's right, New-Freakin'-Jersey! Dirty Jerz, represent!
were slapshot a straight edge band?
Yes
Choke.
I remember driving home in the van when he hurt his knee. I was feeling really bad for him.

Scot To check out Victory, or Fatskins, or Noi!se, or Yellow Stiches
That's a tough subject, coming from an old Independent who saw the joining of punks/Skins. Punks with shaved heads are NOT automatically Skins.
Fear city are awesome
Kenmore Square is nothing now. It's a huge hotel for very rich people.
It was a fun dump back in the early 80's.

The funniest guy in hardcore is Shane Mackie.

He's right about BAD BRAINS. Up until '82, they were the most amazing band in the scene. After that, not so great.
