To give you some context: Olexandr Ponomaryov (2003) is (and was) a big star in Ukraine, but when they sent him they decided to give him some renown European author's song and not one of his own and that's the result (well, we didn`t know better back then, because the experience was brand new).
Greenjolly (2005) on the other hand were performing a song of great significance to Ukrainians because it became a sort of anthem of Orange revolution of 2004. So I guess everyone just wanted it on the big stage with no regards to its appeal to European audience or chances of winning or even doing good.
Fun fact: one of the dancers in that performance is young Kostyantyn Tomilchenko who would make that magnificent staging for Go_A's performance in 2021.
Ukraine is so chaotic, but I love it. And 100% qualifier. Good job!

in 2005 they weren't purposely doing bad. The song was talking about the orange revolution, freeing themselves from Russian influence and being together calling for democracy and it was performed during the revolution, so like some people said, it was meaningful to Ukranians and when you know the backstory the song sounds really powerful (the handcuffed guys, the repeated 'rtogether we are many')

Next year after Ukraine won the band Green Jolly ware presented Ukraine, because they were singing some patriotic song. This song was the anthem of The Orange Revolution in Ukraine in November 2004 - January 2005. Yes. We had The Revolution, which is already in The History. Ukraine always has such a complicated history😢
But yes. This song was not for Eurovision. But people wanted them to perform.

the next year after we win and host the contest there is always weak performance in order not to have to host Eurovision twice in a row))

when verka won selection many ukranians hated on it, thought it will be worst result, even sent threats to Andrei Danilko, performer under stage name Verka Serduchka, even being one of the odds favorites didnt help it
I was rooting for Evgenia Vlasova that year. I'm sure she would come second as well

Ніхто Марув не дискваліфіковував , то вона сама відмовилася їхати , бо згідно контракту мала відмовитися від концертів в Росії ! Але вона не збиралася виконувати цю умову , тому й не підписала контракт !

Agreed about Ruslana. Not only it is one of the greatest entries in Eurovision's history, but it is also the only time Ukraine won by their own merits and not because they were being bombed.
У Джамалы было плохое выступление ?, и разве тогда бомбили? А второе третье места, тоже бомбили. ? Все еврофаны говорят что Украину всегда ждут с нетерпением потому что умеет удивлять и всегда ждут что же в этот раз будет . Не завидуй те. Или завидуй те тихо.😅
