You know what is even more horrific? That you're listening to people that were killed... most of these artists were killed when the Khmer Rouge took control of Cambodia... because they were playing music from the enemies. But here's the miracle, even if those musicians and singers were executed, somehow their vinyls managed to survive stored somewhere... and thus they reached until today, and now we can listen to their voices and instruments here in TH-cam. It's a miracle, a true miracle made by providence and the magic of music, and I can't help but cry. Thanks Cambodian artists, for having made such wonderful music!!!

The Khmer Rouge regime wanted to kill all the intelligent and educated people mostly, the Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, Musician, Singers, but other innocent people were killed as well. My grandparents from both my parent's side were killed, I never gotten a chance to meet them. My parents fled to neighboring Thailand and eventually making it into the United States. I am a first generation born in the United States. Hearing this Khmer rock and roll gives me goosebumps. Their was alot of great Khmer Musicians killed during the Khmer Rouge regime.

I live in Thailand now, but I used to live in Cambodia. People there don't talk much about their past, but you see it everywhere. For example, there just aren't that many old people around...

I don’t think any of them realized that their songs would remain mainstream for so long. Thanks to digitization this music has been immortalized.
The best part is the original vinyls and cassettes are now being released on the internet without the added instrumentation that became all the vogue during the 1980s and 1990s. The Cambodian diaspora should check their grandparents and parents collections. There might be a rare Sakura or White Cloud cassette. Or even just copies of the original cassettes.
So glad the West enjoys the golden age of Cambodian music. But they were more than just rock n roll. Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea and the others were much more than that. They didn’t subscribe to one genre and were versatile.
Sothea for example was renown for her traditional Cambodian ballads which were incorporated into many films of the era. It’s actually used to identify many of the lost films of Cambodia. Or take Huoy Meas and Mao Sareth which reinterpreted many popular Japanese songs.

    • @bb4251

sad part is, if the Khmer Rouge never happened the Cambodian pop industry would probably be much more popular. Cambodia had similar competition shows and programs in the 60s that countries like South Korea has now. Twitter and TH-cam have allowed Korean pop groups to gain fame throughout the world, it would’ve been nice for Cambodian pop to see the same thing - or any near close. Even Thai pop is growing with fans who like Thai movies then going on to listen to Thai songs.

Khmer rocks would have developped in the 60s.Contributed to this, were American rock songs broadcasted by radio stations for US soldiers in war( CCR,The Beatles,Zappelin,ZZ Top,Dire Straight,Scorpions,The Animals...).Locally the pionners were Chum Kem with his songs twist, his cover Let's twist again which toured the country at great weddings and all young people liked to dance this new rythm. And Thach Sali,Var Sovy,...Sin Sisamuth,Ros Serey Sothea,Pen Ran,Mao Sareth,Yol Aularong who had a great success with the students with Chis cyclo teou psar thmei,Srey peak ao phoeum...Suddenly at the same time, appeared rock bands everywhere in PP and even in the provinces. The list of these groups is not exaustive,to be completed: Apsara( Sisovath Sirivuth with Any,Bath aun..),Bak Sey Cham Krong(Mol Kamach with Kaun som lea neak mnai..)
