Here is Elton's take... "Sometimes a song just keeps having a life. There's this track now by Aloe Blacc, his top single 'The Man' samples 'Your Song' -- I love that. For me, it's such a flattering thing for an artist to do, to sample your music ... A song is always relevant if it's a good song."
Same for me. Its not a negative against Blacc. But I grew up when Elton had the song all over the radio and loved the song. So it's hard to not think of his chorus while listening to Blacc's.
It's called sampling. Happens in music all of the time, especially in Rap and Hip Hop; Kanye is one of the kings of sampling. Rihanna in fact sampled Ginuwine's pony lyrics for one of her songs.
Um, no it's not. Sampling is using an exact recording (or sample) from another song. When you sample, you don't hide the fact you are using their material. What Blacc did was use Elton John's melody because he's not creative enough to come up with something so good by himself.
scott smith He didn't hide that fact; Elton is even listed in the credits for it, as virtually everyone who's posted up here has already pointed out. People who sample songs often alter them somewhat; this is a very common practice in the music industry, and this extends to lyrics in other songs as well, since those have their own copyright restrictions. You just didn't do your homework and now look like a noob.
No, sampling is when you take the exact song and over dub it into the song.. not taking the same melody line and singing it yourself.. maybe you should look it up you little latina.
There are many examples of songs sampling another without your exact definition. Whatever you wanna call it...Elton John was cool with it, and I guess that's whose opinion really matters here. I'm not exactly a huge fan of the Aloe Blacc song, but I think when done right (which to me, he did), it opens up new generations to music they probably have never heard.
Aloe Blacc: Girl you can tell everybody. Elton John : and you can tell everybody. Only 4 words match so no theft, plagiarism, or copyright infringement committed.
scott smith can you not see? or can you not read? Sample Credits: "The Man" contains an interpolation from "Your Song" written by E. John & B. Taupin. Published by Universal - Songs of PolyGram Int., Inc.
Fernando Garza Just because no copyright infringement was committed, doesn't make Aloe Blacc any less of an uncreative thief. I find it amazing how so many of today's artists are completely unable to create their own hooks, so they have to take from someone else (of course protecting themselves legally by giving credit in the liner notes, but that's not the point).
Fernano Garza...the definition of plagiarism is "3 or more words in succession" (as taught by numerous universities), not 4 words, so it *would be* plagiarism *if* Aloe Blacc hadn't credited Elton John and Bernie Taupin as a songwriters in the song (they were the original writers of "Your Song". He's given credit for those 4 words; therefore, no stealing/plagiarism exists here and original songwriters John and Taupin will get some of the royalties from the song. Both win in this case!
I don't CARE if he filled out the paperwork for permission from Elton's publisher. Write your own awesome new tune, dude ! Why piss all over a great classic work? This reminds me of Lauren Holly butchering Islands in the Stream.
Even if it isn't stolen its still kinda sad since some people aren't familiar with Elton John's song "Your Song" they automatically think its 100% original :/
It's not really stealing, I can guarantee every song in the future that's written will end up having the same lyrics as some song that's been written in the past
Omg those 7 words! In a song with totally different chords and lyrics otherwise! With Elton john given credit, for said (again omg) 7 words. Such thief. Many steal.
LOL! Stolen?! Mr Aloe Blacc is paying homage to Sir Elton John. Believe me the publishing is tight, the agreement was made and Elton John and Bernie Taupin are getting paid.
Glad to hear he got permission. I'm still turned off by the fact Aloe's song (actually from Elton's song) claims HE'S THE MAN, while not even creating a truly original piece. The "look at me", "worship me" attitude is opposite of a true MAN. Props for his success regardless. Like Kid Rock - sampling twists songs into a new genre. Sometimes for the better. This time not.
Aloe Blacc explicitly credited Elton John on the track listing....
Oh nice
Here is Elton's take... "Sometimes a song just keeps having a life. There's this track now by Aloe Blacc, his top single 'The Man' samples 'Your Song' -- I love that. For me, it's such a flattering thing for an artist to do, to sample your music ... A song is always relevant if it's a good song."
I can't even listen to Aloe Blacc's song without being heavily distracted by the Elton John sound alike
Same for me. Its not a negative against Blacc. But I grew up when Elton had the song all over the radio and loved the song. So it's hard to not think of his chorus while listening to Blacc's.
Elton John helped aloi blacc write "the man"
LOL...no he didn't.
I definitely noticed it

@@SFTaYZa you can tell everybody
@@scottsmith-yw7bp bro its just 1 fucken line. Elton didnt invent those words. Chill
When I hear aloe blacc's song I think of Elton John's your song... its stolen.. ripped off, whatever you wanna call it.
Nope. It's called sampling. Look that up.
No, sampling is when you take the exact song and over dub it into the song.. not taking the same melody line and singing it yourself.. maybe you should look it up you little latina.

IT'S SOUNDS THE SAME, I AGREE WITH YOU!
The first time I listened to "The Man" I immediately though about "Your Song"...
it is NOT stolen Aloe got Elton's permission before he published this song I'm a huge Elton John fan and Aloe Blacc fan, they are both great artist
Elton John is credited as a co-writer isn't he?
Happy to say I am the one who called Aloe out on this, on his FB page years ago. it is a clear rip off and he has acknowledged the fact.
OOOH THAAAAANK YOOUUU
Its one line
I was listening to Elton's song right now, I immediately thought of Aloe Blacc
You can tell everybody, ELTON is the man, and Bernie of course.
He probably gave Elton credit after he got called out, wouldn't be surprised, it's happened.
Its not stolen. Elton John is listed as one of the songwriters for "The Man".
It's called sampling man! Every one does it! As long as you have permission it's ok!
Aloe Blacc: Girl you can tell everybody. Elton John : and you can tell everybody. Only 4 words match so no theft, plagiarism, or copyright infringement committed.
Are you tone deaf? There's more to the music than just the lyrics.
scott smith can you not see? or can you not read? Sample Credits:

at least Elton gets credit for inspiring new music, Elton has so many good songs and the best ones are hardly known, scott smith
The sad part is nothing to do with Aloe Blacc for using 4 words. Its that people think ellie goulding is the original
think most people now know this song was written by Elton and Bernie
It's not really stealing, I can guarantee every song in the future that's written will end up having the same lyrics as some song that's been written in the past
Stolen? It literally says one of the authors of the song is Elton John on the official youtube music video...
It's called sampling
stolen? how come?
ps: elton john is one of co-writers of this song. lol
id like to find a remix with elton john
It's not stolen
It's not stolen its called a sample he didn't steal the whole song he stole part of it
It's like 3/4 of the song...
Jesus people its called sampling. -_-
Omg those 7 words! In a song with totally different chords and lyrics otherwise! With Elton john given credit, for said (again omg) 7 words. Such thief. Many steal.
Its only 4 words.
Isaiah Bekkers "you can tell everybody"

Elton john : and you can tell everybody
LOL! Stolen?! Mr Aloe Blacc is paying homage to Sir Elton John. Believe me the publishing is tight, the agreement was made and Elton John and Bernie Taupin are getting paid.
Oh wow really?! Truthfully if it was our not who gives a shit?!
I guess you can plagiarize as long as you call it "sampling."
And when you credit them as a co-writer and receive their permission
Glad to hear he got permission. I'm still turned off by the fact Aloe's song (actually from Elton's song) claims HE'S THE MAN, while not even creating a truly original piece. He did credit him.
can't even listen to "the man" because it's so frustrating that he "copied"
