Legumes and whole grains are not associated with obesity in any major cohort study, on the contrary they're associated with reduced all cause mortality. In fact legumes in particular are the only food group consistently associated with longevity in every blue zone population on Earth.

    I am a huge fan of Esselstyn's diet - I have myself reversed my coronary artery disease on this diet. But Esselstyn's patients in his published work did use low-dose statins. The important point is that no amount of statins can reverse heart disease.

    Well you straw manned Layne's position on good cals/bad cals. His opinion on calories in vs out on weight loss is exactly that - less than what you use = weight loss. More than you use = weight gain, however he has stated emphatically hundreds of times that empty calories have to be taken in low to moderate use. Attacking him on pointing out that the people involved in the film have a bias is absurd - since that's the first thing anyone does to any researcher when science is published. How many times have we heard you point out that something being funded by the dairy industry is automatically suspect - even when the scientific methods are sound and peer reviewed. End of the day I agree with your overall conclusions though.

    How is protein even part of the vegan conversation anymore? Pretending that vegans have a hard time getting protein is like pretending that vegans have a hard time getting carbs. It's literally nonsense. I don't even agree with veganism, I eat a pound of red meat every day. I doubt I'll reach 40 but whatever.

    • @tamarlk
      @tamarlk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean with not agreeing with veganism? That makes it sound as if veganism is based on opinion and preference - which is not the case as the nutritional, environmental and ethical arguments in support of veganism are sound.

    • @davidm6387
      @davidm6387 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tamarlk Veganism is based on opinion and preference, that is the nature of ethics. For example, I prefer to reduce as much as possible the odds that the food I eat comes from child exploitation or de-facto slave labor. This is more important to me than sparing animals from cruelty. Eating lots of plants almost guarantees that you violate this ethic. As for the other things, everything I've ever heard vegans say about the environment has been either extreme dishonestly or outright lies. The environmental damage and habitat loss caused by tilling and monocropping, phosphate mining, and depleting aquifers is infinitely worse than me eating cows from a nearby farm, which I prefer. As for nutrition, for me personally more meat = better and more plants = worse health. That might not be true for you or for many others, but it is for me. Another thing, I disagree with the ethics of veganism because I value human prosperity higher than I value kindness to non-humans. Animals aren't your friends. Snuggling with an adorable kitten doesn't put food on anyone's table or clothes on anyone's back. As a species we're still in the dark ages. Life is still really hard for a staggering majority of humans. I see it as ethically wrong to slow down progress because some animals are cute.

      @@davidm6387 There is a lot of nonsense to unpack in your comment, and considering I have other things to do, I am only going to respond to the comments that seem most central to your position.
      First, you say (rather: assume) that eating plants guarantees that you violate the ethic of preventing child labour. However, you completely fail to acknowledge that child labour is common throughout all agricultural subsectors, even more so in fishing, aquaculture and livestock husbandry than in "regular" crop farming [1, 2]. So if you actually cared about child labour, as you claim you do, you should eat less animal products and more plants.
      Second, you say that "everything [you've] ever heard vegans say about the environment has been either extreme dishonestly or outright lies", which is blatantly misleading. Environmental studies have unequivocally established that plant-based diets are more environmentally friendly than animal-based diets as they emit fewer greenhouse gases and require fewer natural resources like arable land and fresh water [3-5]. In fact, according to the largest analysis to date, the most unsustainable plant foods are still more sustainable than the most sustainable animal foods [6].
      Third, you say that "more meat = better and more plants = worse health", which is also nonsense. The world’s leading authorities on health and nutrition all support the position that well-planned vegan diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate and can support healthy living in people of all ages, including athletes [7-9]. In fact, vegans are even at reduced risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, type-2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension and certain types of cancer [7, 8].
      Also, a massive analysis recently published in the British Medical Journal found that "increases in red meat consumption, especially processed meat, were associated with higher overall mortality rates." The study's authors add: "The association between increased red meat consumption and mortality risk was consistent across subgroups defined by age, physical activity, dietary quality, smoking status, or alcohol consumption", meaning that the detrimental health effects of meat were consistent even when controlling for other lifestyle factors [10].
      Fourth, you say that it is "ethically wrong to slow down progress because some animals are cute". I agree. But you're not providing an argument here; you're just strawmanning veganism, which shows you have no idea what you're talking about. If anything, veganism has the potential to solve many problems millions of people across the globe face today, like food and water scarcity and air pollution. This is probably why over 15000 scientists from all over the world, including 100 Nobel laureates, advise the world's governments to "[promote] dietary shifts towards mostly plant-based foods", as "farming ruminants for meat consumption" is especially troubling in light of the "current trajectory of potentially catastrophic climate change" [11].
      I don't mind that you disagree with any vegans you happen to come across, as it is your right to hold whatever opinion you please. But I do care that you're rather reckless in sharing your misinformed opinions on the internet, pretending as if they are facts - even though anyone who actually knows a thing or two about the relevant scientific literature can easily pick apart all your nonsensical bullshit statements you think are "arguments".

      @@tamarlk It looks like you put a lot of work into that reply, so I'll go point by point. #1 I get my meat from only a few sources, all of which fulfill my ethical standards. Whatever evil things are going on elsewhere isn't funded by me. #2 To use an evocative idiom, that pool has been peed in.The nonstop lies I keep hearing trying to defend modern plant agriculture vs pasture beef have made me pretty much deaf to any claims about pollution or land and water use. Cows eating grass is less destructive than permanently ruining soil by tilling it, cows can graze on land not usable for modern agriculture, and rain ain't the same thing as depleting aquifers. #3 You don't know anything about my body and health. Your weak correlation data is irrelevant to me personally. Real life does not consistently support the claim that vegan is superior to a diet which includes red meat. #4 It's not that simple. The use of animal agriculture promotes prosperity and stability. Crops fail so easily, unless you do some incredibly wicked shit like Spain's humanity-destroying ocean of greenhouses.
      You say my claims are "nonsensical bullshit" but you've only shown that you don't have the life experience to try to talk down to me.

    • @tamarlk
      @tamarlk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidm6387 Thanks for your reply. For the sake of consistency, I'm going to respond point by point.
      First, you're not making an argument here. Just a blanket statement in which you justify your behavior. So I don't need to respond to this.
      Second, you're simply blaming other people for making you "deaf" with their "nonstop lies" regarding "modern plant agriculture vs pasture beef", which isn't an argument. Besides, these aren't lies. For example, the University of Oxford recently published a report in which they investigated the effects of grass-fed beef on the environment, compared to other methods of food production. They conclude "that grass-fed livestock are not a climate solution. Grazing livestock are net contributors to the climate problem, as are all livestock. Rising animal production and consumption, whatever the farming system and animal type, is causing damaging greenhouse gas release and contributing to changes in land use." They add: "Ultimately, if high consuming individuals and countries want to do something positive for the climate, maintaining their current consumption levels but simply switching to grass-fed beef is not a solution. Eating less meat, of all types, is." [1]
      Third, I never said anything about your body and health. You're strawmanning my argument. Also, this isn't "weak correlational data". I could go into detail explaining why it isn't, but I think that won't convince you. Besides, you're acting as if we only have correlational data indicating that meat is bad for you, which is nonsense. There are numerous randomized controlled trials (the gold standard of science) that show that vegan diets are better for weight management [2-6], lowering cholesterol levels and reducing heart disease risk than any other diet researchers compare them to [2, 3, 7, 8]. Vegans also have better kidney function [9-11], lower rates of cancer [12], arthritis [13, 14] and Alzheimer's disease [15, 16]. I could go on and on, but you get my point: this isn't "weak correlational data". These are randomized, controlled experiments which allow researchers to establish causality - which they have.
      The fact that you think this is "weak correlational data" demonstrates your ignorance of the relevant scientific literature - not the lack of it. Also, simply saying that the "use of animal agriculture promotes prosperity and stability" without providing evidence as to why this is the case doesn't make it true. I find it interesting how you make strong claims but failed to use even one (!) source for any of them. Lastly, I'm not talking "down to you". I'm calling you out for spreading false information.

      @@Changeling9au Well I can assure that they dont hold hands and touch each other during a nutrition PhD. VG also fails to comprehend what nutrition is. A nutritious food can be very unhealthy. The mcdouble was actually claimed the most nutritious food on the planet per dollar. Because the bread is heavily fortified, and it contains beef, there is essentially every single vitamin and mineral (nutrients) your body would need to survive (and actually grow). It comes without saying that's not healthy.
      The guy with a PhD in nutrition does have a valid scientific stance, and does use some references to support it. VG picks these claims apart, but VGs claims can easily be picked apart too if you're willing to dedicate the time to it.
      Quick example: VG references that a gladiator picture displayed physically fit gladiators. That's great, but it literally proves nothing. For 1)its a painting (not entirely valid source of data) 2) you would expect literal slaves to not have much fat on them, as ideal as fat would be for a gladiator. I'm sure the winning few got to eat well, but carbohydrates are cheap and that's what you feed slaves.
      I dont have a PhD, but I'm working on my second Bachelors right now and have used my Bsc to do genetic pathology research for a university, so I'm not entirely dumb even though I eat meat (quality sourced meat). As a "scientist" every single one of the claims VG makes in this video could ultimately be disputed. This whole thing is turning into such a shit show. VG himself has put on a large amount of fat over the time I've watched him. Fat isn't good. Once your glycogen stores become saturated, the rest of the carbohydrates you consume will convert into adipose reserve tissue, and a bit will be urinated out.
      Just eat a goddam balanced diet and source your foods well. 🤙
