I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.
I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

Most Americans find it hard to retire comfortably amid economy downtrend. Some have close to nothing going into retirement, my question is, will you pay off mortgage as a near-retiree, or spread money for cashflow, to afford lifestyle after retirement?

Agreed the role of advisors can only be overlooked, but not denied. I remember in early 2020, during covid-outbreak, my portfolio worth around $300k took a slight fall, apparently due to the pandemic crash, at once I consulted an advisor in order to avoid panic-selling. As of today, my account has yielded big fat yields, and leverages on 7-figure, only cos I delegate my excesses right.

It is just good habits. Buying a run down house is a great idea. Second hand clothes is a good one too. Five children is a lot. (This is impressive) FIRE can be done by anyone.
I've been diligently working, saving, and investing towards financial freedom and early retirement. However, the economy's downturn since the pandemic has significantly eroded my portfolio. As far as I know, 1st generation immigrants do not earn a lifetime pension from the Government. They live from the Tax Payers money. Not a problem for me, but lets just be clear about that.

@@nadominhoca I think I’ll have to disagree with you. I have five kids, work 50+ hours a week, and still have time to spend with each kid. None of my kids are a burden, if you feel that way then you’re simply not doing it right. I enjoy my work and spend time building that career to the next level, and I equally spend time with my kids to help them grow into the type of people they want to become. Your statement made me think you don’t have any kids. Would that be accurate? If not, that’s fine. The difference is making time for kids, not the money, there is always a work around for money. If I made half my salary I could still afford decent clothes for my kids annually. We don’t buy luxurious clothes or items, we buy moderate clothes that everyone likes without going above and beyond.

In fact, a colleague had told me that his friend was given something in Bangkok.
After his friend brought that thing back to our home country, very bad things really happened to his family.

I did something similar. Bought the worst house, stripped it, spent on the floor in the cold and slowly fixed it up using cash over years, not weeks. Best time of my life but the neighbours hated me for not doing an expensive fast track renovation.

I couldn’t love this video enough❤️ Our family is debt free. I work part time while my kids are in school and my husband works as a railroad conductor. My hubby wants to retire early as well!!! Maybe in 10 years. Our passion is in the Mission’s field. We’ve gone several times in the Philippines🇵🇭 and we fell in love!!! Our two oldest has gone on Missions Trip to the Philippines and they loved it as well!! Our kids want to be Dr.’s and we’re planning on them going to the Philippines🇵🇭 to take Medicine. It’ll only cost 1/4 of tuition if they study there instead of the US!!! Having a Why and and Goal really helps when you want to be Financially FREE!!! Most of all we just want to be obedient to God’s calling in our lives❤️ Blessings to your family!!!

Yes, finally a couple with kids. Usually when you hear stories about people retiring early, they are single with no children. Their story is so motivating.
I see no problem with this kind of setup. BUT both parents need to be frugal for it to work down the road, like 30+ years of frugality

Renting out your main house is a nightmare waiting to happen with just one wrong tenant. Eve n if they don't thrash the house or squat in it, leaving out all my stuff is traumatic and so is the accounting for potential theft and misplacement.
I guess they packed every personal stuff in a cheap storage before they took off for the trip. There are actually ways to offset the risk of bad tenants.

They are smart and savvy. Living on floors and having a flooded home had to be difficult, but it turned out fruitful for them long term. Almost all parts of Montana are affordable as well.
Even someone close to retirement could learn from this example. Spend less on housing and more on experiences. Stick to a budget. Learn to live without one income stream. Use 4% of investments. It's realistic and can work. SMART! Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, timely.

With that many kids and that little of an income they have to be on some sort of subsidized healthcare plan, likely the ACA. I'm not criticizing though it's just so many of these type of stories never addresses the health insurance portion and with food and shelter it's the big 3 of most important expenses before you can retire in my humble opinion.
I agree with you. No retirement plan is complete without accounting for healthcare expenses and other Murphy's Law emergencies.
I was thinking the same thing, unless he gets some type of free insurance from his military retirement plan.
Retired military personnel (usually 20+ years of service) have effectively free healthcare for life. Their families’ healthcare is heavily subsidized.

I'm falling in love with this *_F.I.R.E_* concept. I'm looking at my expenses now and I am spending WAAAYYYY too much money on 3 phones and internet. It's time for an overhaul.

I admire your focus in understanding sources and expenses.
A possible expense to be chipped away are utilities.
However, I have no idea how much of this is water, electricity, wood, or gas.
Your state and utilities might offer incentives to reduce this.
A possible, immediate way is thermal energy. A hot water heat pump from A.O. Smith might cut hot water expenses in half.
Another expense is food.
If you can, for instance, buy grains such as wheat; mill the grain into flour; process this into pasta, bread, or pastries.
If you are a coffee drinker, you can buy green beans; you can roast the beans, and make your own espresso shots.
Finally, you can, for instance, do canning for tomatoes, and use this for pasta.
The result is fresher, better tasting food without preservatives at a lower cost than grocery food.
Canning, also, allows you to buy in bulk when supplies are larger and at lower prices.
In addition, you are training your kids to stand on their own.

Living in a place where you can buy a house for 50k was the first stepping stone imo. Not everyone is so lucky. But good on them.
Torunamukaji There’s actually a lot of houses in many areas around the US for very close to that price....they’re going to be in very similar conditions though. You’re real estate agent isn’t going to have those in file unless they specialize in blighted or foreclosed properties. There are a lot of people who flip these houses and end up selling them for double if not more BUT the average person can also take advantage of these types of opportunities too.

What they didn’t mention was the cost for their second home as a rental. Cost to remodel an entire house while taking time off work to do so and a few other huge expenses.
Their second home doesn't cost them. They MAKE money each month from their rental, because the rent covers all the expenses of that house plus profit.
They likely got an inheritance or lived in a home on the west coast, near NYC or somewhere else really expensive and sold it for heaps then paid cash for the rental here. It's quite common in western Montana. It's why the people who grew up there can't afford homes

They are very lucky to have each other with the same goals. Me and my wife do not see eye to eye at all regarding finances. We live in north Texas (Dallas/Plano). We are a family of four. I made about 155k per year for last twelve years. She started working three years ago and made about 50k each year. Here are some things that happened: 1) She spent $7000 on a trip to Spain while we had two car debts. 2) While we were in Spain, she spent $2500 on a purse (completely hiding the purchase from me) which she cannot return. 3) We spent $4200 on our daughter's high school graduation party. Her argument was, since we got gifts of about that much it was a good decision. 4) Our daughter could have graduated debt-free from college and with $15k in her hands. Instead of supporting me in this decision, my wife gave an example of someone who took ten years to pay off college debt. Her point is, why should our daughter graduate debt-free when so many people are graduating with a lot of debt. Our daughter now has about $52k in debt when she graduates in two months. That is after paying off some loans through internship. 5) We were in a 2000+ sqft house - 4 BR 2 BA. She incessantly complained for months (asked our daughter to join in) as the friends we hang out with have much bigger homes. We are now in a 3800+ sqft home with $288k in debt. 6) She doesn't share how she spends her earnings with me. She doesn't even let me see her paycheck. She tells me that since I am the husband who signed that I'll take care of her during our wedding, it is my responsibility to support the family not hers (this is due to the rules in our religion). There are numerous other smaller incidences. Folks, sorry to make you read this. Just sharing this with you to feel lighter.

Has to be military. I didn't see insurance in the breakdown. That was a secondary reason I was thinking of joining the reserve. Insurance is a tough ask for non-working Americans.
Exactly! That’s the twist of the plot. Its not that they can live cheap and found this amazing formula. The truth is that you (the tax payer) is the one that is supporting their lifestyle. You pay for their insurance and schooling.

Key thing is that most of these people are married. It’s makes a big difference when you have two incomes coming in.
I think I would have done better as a single individual. I live in a city that is very expensive. I would like to move to somewhere cheaper but my partner is not bulging leaving the city we are living in.
Olah Ola gotcha! Idk, I’m single and pay for everything myself. The fire movement just isn’t something I can do right now. Not much left after bills are paid and I live in a south state where the cost of living is so called cheaper. Hopefully you and your spouse can get on the same page.
I doubt the wife was working full-time with 5 kids. You don't need two incomes to achieve your financial goals. A good partner can help stretch your single income a lot further. 👍

That is always my concern with early retirement in US -- anything goes wrong health-wise, and you're screwed. Sometimes even with insurance.
Yes he and his family are covered for free but not free in a sense because those many years of service and I am sure plenty of long deployments away from the family.

Where I live, the median income is ~$36,700USD. In my city, a run down or simple 3 bedroom house would be ~$250,000USD. There's no such thing as $50,000USD houses.

Brian S Life is good! While the video does not indicate directly, one can only get a VA “disability” pension if the injury was incurred on the job/military service connected. This is also known as zero to 100% disability. Depending under the rules that one falls, family is normally not included.

Opal Johnson yes they are. It’s one of the greatest benefits of military retirement. Of course doing 20 years with multiple combat tours makes that retirement harder to achieve than many think.

A 1,400 military pension, and free health care for military families. These are not geniuses. They are average people living average with extra help. Makes it a lot easier when the government helps. I feel they didn’t give enough credit to all those GI benefits.
@@cloudchaser907 Oh, that makes complete sense about healthcare being covered because of the military. Where I am, healthcare is about $1,100 a month for me as an individual. Granted I do have multiple chronic diseases, so I'll max out my deductible and max-out of pocket.
