It’s not easy being someone’s son. Especially if your dad’s name was Frank Zappa. But Frank was so darned proud of Dweezil and his playing ability. He never told any of his kids, “you can’t do that”. Rest In Peace!

I've got George Washington's musket. The stock, barrel and lock works have all been replaced but the front sight is original.

Dweezil is one of the most underrated guitarists out there... watching him and Vai trade licks back and forth is still one of my most memorable concert moments.

I started playing in 1976 after I heard All Along the Watchtower by Jimi and I still have that Guitar Player magazine my mother bought me Frank Zappa and that Strat on the cover! Just last week I was wondering what had happened to that Guitar and stumbled across this video. Dweezil and Norm thank you for posting this video, it's reassuring to know that Dweezil has it.
Had the privilege to meet Dweezil and his band years ago at their Dweezilla summer camp. Truly awesome experience. This guy perfectly nailed his fathers work.

To understand Jimi’s impact on music you have to realize he was popular in America for only about two years before he died.

@Jon Sknows, I know from interviews that Pete Townsend from the Who said that that they followed Hendrix at Woodstock. Hendrix was in top form, so Pete came up with the lighting his guitar on fire to try and be equal to Hendrix performance. I didn't know Hendrix lite his guitar on fire.

It was most definitely NOT burned at Miami Pop. Jimi did NOT burn any guitars at Miami Pop. In fact there are only THREE confirmed and independently corroborated venues where Jimi burned a guitar. Obviously the most famous and filmed show was Monterey Pop in June 1967. But prior to that show Jimi burned his first guitar in England on March 31, 1967 at the Finsbury Park Astoria in London. The LAST time Jimi ever burned a guitar onstage was Sunday August 13 at the Ambassador Hotel in Washington DC. This burning is corroborated by several witnesses and photographic evidence. If anyone else tries to tell you they saw Jimi burn a guitar at any other show they hallucinated it. Dweezil's guitar either came from the Astoria or the Ambassador. But it was not burned in Miami on May 18, 1968.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Dweezil a couple times at NAMM shows, and he is super kind and gracious! Also saw his father in concert two times, and that was incredible!!!

I was listening to Frank's music for years before I saw him live, from the first minute he started playing it was like a revelation, I was totally blown away by his playing. That's one of my favorite concert memories.

He was very contrarian and as the 70's came to a close, he went from being a capitalist Libertarian to a reactionary Democrat. Listen to Broadway the Hardway. That's about his last album to receive airplay and "When the Lie's So Big" basically buried him. Frank didn't give a shit. He had gone head first into radical composing by the mid 70's and that was really his thing, he was conducting and arranging radical progressive orchestral music until the day he died of pancreatic cancer. Sheik Yerbouti(Shake Your Booty) was his "Fuck you disco record." By the early 80's he was more interested in politics and he was burned out on trying to run a band- remember Frank developed Mark Bolan and Steve Vai- he had become used to getting that caliber of player. He detested others drug use and he detested the politics and the excess. For a while there, very briefly(few years) Dweezil and Ahmed had a band together and they actually put out more "rawhk" music than Frank did. Frank did rock records up until Jazz from Hell but by that time his heart was in composing. Dancing Fool off Sheik Yerbouti received a lot of air play, Montana off the "Mothers of Invention" album received airplay. Because the rating system Tipper Gore was hustling was so unpopular, "Mothers of Prevention" even received airplay in the 80's. Civilization Phase III received airplay, though I think if memory is right, Frank was gone by the release... Civilization Phase III was even advertised in Marvel and DC Comic books, KRock played selections, the Ocean City MD station that had Don and Mike played Civ Ph3, the DC studio Imus and Liddy were on played Civilization Phase III. Frank smoked like a chimney and he died from prostate cancer- he enjoyed fucking with people to the end. He rarely gave interviews but some vapid woman from NPR commented on his poor health and his still smoking and he said live on air "I'm not sure if you've ever had a cigarette before but you don't smoke them out of your sphincter..."
My dad was at the Miami Pop Festival. He stills talks to this day about seeing Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa!

I had in my hands a guitar Hendrix played. For sale at Wurlitzer music store in Boston. Had a certificate with it. When your a musician trying to get by. Any amount of money is a lot. Plus my focus was not to sell it and make a profit. That was I think mid 70's. I do remember it was a amazing deal! Life goes on.

Ever wonder in the 70's if Frank Zappa had a kid, what would he turn out like? This isn't what most people thought. He seems to be very centered, intelligent, spark in his personality, musically gifted, and attractive/humble.
Frank was a smart guy too.
I've seen Dweezil a couple times playing his dad's music and he was amazing. He's also a super nice guy to fans. I am glad to have met him.
The Frank aspect is what makes this guitar a Holy Grail item of historical significance to the guitar aficionado, IMHO.

+Quantum Leep All of Jimi's Strats were Fender, the body in this video is definitely a Fender sunburst, it was his guitar of choice for everything including destruction, I agree it should have been left alone for display only. After Jimi burned that first Strat at Monterey, somebody got a big hunk of the body, and put it on display at a local record store here shortly after for a few days.
+Johngonefishin 'All Fenders' yes, but not all his actual playing guitar it is well documented that Hendrix switched to a different guitar, albeit a Fender, before destroying it , that's what you have here .

@@derwinlowery Jimi did not give it to Frank. A roadie gave it to Frank. Probably just somebody that worked at the festival at the time. One of my friends was there, Jimi just left it there after he set it afire.

Why the haters? 2 people talking about a guitar that passed through the hands and was played by some titanic players; yes, some new parts, not selling the guitar to anybody, and not hiding anything, just showing off some gear. Does it raise Norm's profile (and I'm not particularly familiar w/the shop)?; yes - so what. Is Dweezil a great musician himself; yes - though I've only seen him and band once. Thanks to both of you/them for recording this. Me, I'll find another outlet for my depression and anger.

I took my daughter to see Dweezil and the mothers in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK about 5 years ago. Her first taste of what a proper band is about, Frank was there in Virtuality. Amazing night.
What a super well balanced young man, i realize that this is 10 years old but still today he is most likely 10 years wiser. His father was one of my rock heros so much different than all the others , he carved out his own path through life that what makes him so special i remember when you were born i was just a kid but i still remember it , your dad bragging about you to the world, i could be mistaken but i think you have at least a sister or brother something to do with moon ?

I saw him play in '98 for, of all people, Lisa Loeb in a tiny little venue in Jax FL. He and Lisa were sitting at a table signing autographs after the show. Stupidity set in and I lost my nerve to talk to him for fear of looking stupid. After hearing this video, I wish I had. He does seem like an awesome guy.
I really like how he and Frank and a bunch of other people played this guitar, modified it and just didn't put it in a case somewhere. If anyone else had it they would just throw it in a case like it's some artifact of God. I think most musicians would rather see their instruments played over displayed.
They didn't do that becAuse it is now not an artefact. it might have been once, when it was burned and fucked up, but now it is just a guitar and all you can do with is play it.

I remember Frank holding it on one of the many bootlegs covers I had years ago. Saw DWEEZ in LA in december ... He was awesome ! I'm glad he does it for people who might not have gotten to see FRANK . Saw Frank over 50 - 60 ? times 11 shows up and down the east coast one tour . NEVER A DULL MOMENT ! He played so effortlessly it was strange to watch sometimes. Always TOP MUSICIANS too .

I'd just like to add that I inherited from my brother a vintage Scotch Magic Transparent tape dispenser. I replaced the tape roll to get it back to it's original specs.
Bro I think you got a fugazi cuz I GOT that same dispenser with the original tape but I dont play with it cuz of sentimental value and stuff like that you know.
My Uncle Milton left me his prized Red Swingline Model 646 Stapler (S7064698).

A big thanks does indeed need to go out to the very intelligent and well spoken Mr. Zappa as he engaged in a battle of wits with the unarmed Tipper Gore. Good thing Al was out inventing the internet or this conversation could not take place.
Notice while holding the gitfiddle, Dweezel had his fingers in a chord position! That tells you he's a guitar player! Whenever I pick up my guitar, my fingers naturally form a chord while handling it!
Jimi seemed to be very generous with his guitars. Al Kooper tells the story about when he was admiring Hendrix's strat while they were recording Electric Ladyland. Jimi tried to give him the guitar then, but Kooper said he couldn't take another guy's guitar. Hendrix had it delivered to Kooper's house the next day.

Reading the comments below is amusing. They are not touting the value of the instrument they are talking about the history of what it has gone through. The body is original and since it doesn't appear that Dweezil is trying to sell it but rather celebrating it's heritage and using it this is pretty cool in my book.
The fact that this thing was in the room when Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix had a conversation is enough to do a full documentary on it

Right. People are equating money value with historical value, which in turn effects its money value. This is such a common thing for old guitars from legendary players. They get destroyed over time and so people refurbish them. The people who are making fun of this guitar are probably people who who would be more impressed with a guitar with a Kaoss pad built in than a relic of a legendary guitarist. I can stuff what ever gizmos into my guitar any time, but I will never have a guitar built from the remnants of Jimi Hendrixs guitar that he SET ON FIRE in one of the most iconic performances of all time.
Simpler answer: maybe they're both right handed? 🤗

Then you'd be mistaken...Hendrix was famous for setting his guitar on fire and to have the wood body that was burned is the whole thing right there. I just Googled that cover of Guitar Player Magazine that he was talking about. Man, Frank was a hairy beast! I never really got into his music that much. He was a fabulous musician and guitarist, but his music was almost like comedy. Like Weird Al" Yankovic. Songs like Stinkfoot, Muffin Man, Foamy Soaky, Drums Are Too Noisy and Dog Breath, in the Year of the Plague are good examples of his humorous lyrics and content. But if you listen to the actual music, it is so well composed and his guitar skills are legendary. A man ahead of his time.
And then Primus comes in.

I've got an ax that my great-great grandfather brought from Cornwall in 1850, which the family has used continuously since. It's in wonderful original condition; the head has been replaced twice, and the handle only 3 times. Good as new.

I worked in a guitar store during the mid to late 70's and we sold Guitar Player magazine. I clearly remember that issue with this guitar on the cover. I seem to remember the article saying that Hendix had poured lighter fluid on the guitar and set first to it. Unless I’m getting my stories mixed up.

The Zappa plays Zappa DVD is terrific, the original lineup that features Napoleon Brock Murphy and cameos by Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio; well worth adding to your collection if not only to hear Dweezil play the solo on Inca Roads

Agreed. No negative comments apply. Just the fact that it's lineage has seen so many astonishing players. Yes, it's sad it's not a Jimi original fit-out, but just the same, it was his guitar. I'd just like to see it in person. And Frank Zappa would be proud to know his son has grown to be such a visibly down-to-earth man, and obviously reveres his Dad. We all should be so lucky.

My Brother Joe went and seen Dweezil in Glasgow recently a lifelong fan of his Dad and said Dweezil was brilliant.
My brother has suffered from Schizophrenia all of his adult life and music has been his escape for the most part.

Hendrix wasn't even the best guitarist at Woodstock. Alvin Lee put him to shame.
I saw Frank Zappa in concert.. He was a very talented guitar player and highly underrated.
This video was very cool. I love the history of the guitar. Just amazing how many great guitarists played it. I would have loved hearing it though.

I remember staring at that guitar on the cover of Guitar Player with Frank back in 1977, mesmerized. I gotta get a good picture of that cover and frame it.
