Really appreciate how meticulous you are in cleaning up those billets when you cut and re-stack. I’m new to this and I’m finding that this is a very time-consuming and tedious aspect of doing pattern welded Damascus but it’s also very rewarding.
Thanks James. I do that to reduce the risk. Experience has taught me with Damascus making how easy it is to ruin an expensive billet. Also I am making for customers. They are paying for the best. So I want clean, trash free welds with the best quality knife that I can provide them. My name is attached to it for the life of the knife. I’m old school and was taught that my good name is very important. We are living in a time where that is not practiced across all spectrum’s. But I could write a book on that lol. Great video, Tony! You should try adding some sacrificial steel on the outsides of your feather when you weld it back together. It prevents the ends from splitting altogether.
@@TonySeverioKnives I've always had a love/hate relationship with feather because it's stressful drawing it out. When I started adding the steel on the outside, it was a game changer.
Yes indeed. I’ve only done it when doing the wavy feather. I need to start doing it either way because you are right about stress. I have managed to do better by keeping it welding heat, bumping the corners and finessing it when drawing out. I think the main problem is the stack welding. It has to be spot on for sure. But I’m going to start doing the add on steel either way and like you say, grind it off. Thanks brother!

Hey Robert thanks! If you notice, I didn’t squeeze the sides before I ground them off. Also I was using stainless sheet metal but either is fine. Just don’t squeeze the sides before removing them. I Soave the stack just long enough so that the kerosene gets in between the layers. A few minutes. Thanks for watching, 😁

Oh I got you. I thought you meant wavy feather. But yes that works. I make a ton of feather blades and I’ll be glad when I can get a break from it. 😂😂
