Hi Kegan, I'm sorry you went through that odyssey to get the appropriate treatment. I was treated in the civilian world, and they used the same approach on me. It's very rare to find someone who knows how to treat trauma. Every approach is pharmaceutical. Even residential treatment doesn't have much to offer other than keep you out of trouble. I remember the food; it's just like you described. The goal is pacification, not healing. No exercise because they can't let you out. Ultimately, I stumbled into better management strategies. The first was sleep. Sleep and more sleep. For years, hyper vigilance from trauma wouldn't let me sleep and compounded my injuries. But, on the maximum dose of a great anti-insomnia drug called zaleplon, I slowly began to improve. My recovery plateaued in a few years though, and I felt better, but still lost. An offhand remark from a psychiatrist led me to the study of trauma and PTSD. The Body Keeps the Score is a good book to start with. Once I started learning, I realized that no one had tried treating me for traumatic experiences. Few doctors in conventional medical practices are aware of the scientifically validated techniques. Next year, my commitment to myself is to find the right therapy for me. Hadn't I found a doctor to prescribe long term anti insomnia medication, I would have been living on the street or dead. My recommendation to you though is to be cautious of the military mindset, the get-r-done outlook. The mind is immensely complex and composed greatly of infantile or even feminine emotions. You need to speak to all these parts of you in a way they can understand to heal them and get them moving forward again. A macho mind won't do this. Let's get better. So many of our brothers have been lost and didn't have this chance.
Serequel (sp?) did the same thing to me too, prescribed for the same reasons, sleep, and too had psychosis. Fortunately or unfortunately, I was with my parents & they made sure nothing happened. I didn't take it again for like, 5 years. It got prescribed to me, accidentally I guess, and it happened again. Freaked my parents out. I thought there were rattlesnakes in my room and then I had a court case and holy shit, Batman.. that was nuts. I had to make a very big decision that day in court too!
