I love that set. The sound quality of the singles is unparalleled. The different countries' sleeves are a very nice touch.

Great review man. That singles box is a MUST, totally.
A short story about one of those singles: My Dad first listened about the Beatles (here in Chile, my country) at the end of 1963 or early 1964, and it was "I Want To Hold Your Hand". It was an absolute new thing that came out of that radio waves. It catch my dad's attention immediatly. He bought the single, but sadly, he didn't kept it in his collection. Now in this box set, the single of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" comes with the Chilean sleeve, the very same sleeve that contained the single that my father bought in 1964. He is very happy seeing that record in his hands again. Full circle, I guess.
Cheers Brian, great video as always.

Absolutely, Brian. The sound quality on all the 45's in this set is fantastic; very open. Just like you, I picked up the Singles Set on a whim a couple of years after its release. Back in 1968 I bought the 45 of 'Lady Madonna' and was amazed at things my ears picked up that I hadn't heard before.
That's true of most of the singles in my collection. Great topic, thanks.

I have all the original 60’s UK singles which I play on a period correct English portable record player and that is the authentic way to hear the singles for me

Back in the years when I started collecting singles, around 1978, I was impressed by how much richer, more vivid the sound was compared to the same take on an album track. Deeper bass, broader dynamic range, often more clarity. I never even figured out this was likely given the less compressed grooves, just noticed the difference. The first single I really noticed this on was an 2nd hand copy of 'See Emily Play' (in original psychedelic polka dot sleeve), whose opening knocked my head off. Man I wish I hadn't sold all those singles decades ago. Only a few left. Another full-on production that really stood out as a single was 'Mathew & Son'. For some reason Beatles singles never sounded much different than the albums to me, so I prioritised their 7 inch EPs. Oh, another full-on crystal clear sound on a single I remember was Scott McKenzie, 'San Francisco.'

Yes, this is exactly why I love this box. Certain songs just seem to jump out of the grooves like "Paperback Writer", "I'm Down", "Get Back" etc etc.

    • @4-dman464
      @4-dman464 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@BrianBringelson 'jump out of the grooves' - - good phrase, you could use that line in a song lyric.

Yes !! This box is fantastic ! I recorded them onto a cdr with a component cd recorder to play in the car and at work and at home playing the 45s, just sitting next to the turntable and enjoying the sleeves. Now, let’s have ep and lp collections with the same box design !

This is a great set. Love the singles and the sound they came up with. I remember reading some reviews online that were critical of the sound but I have seen some TH-cam comparisons that state these match the original singles. My only complaint is that they did not include the singles mix of Please Please Me…..they used the mono album version. Not a deal breaker but wish they thought to include that. Great video. Thanks!

It is a really great box set! Great sound, excellent packaging. Really glad I scored one, though it took me a couple tries.. The first one, nearly every 45 was warped to some degree, among other defects. The 2nd one though was perfect, thankfully. Definitely worth owning. 👍

I don't have this one, Brian, but I have the two previous UK 45 boxes. Love the UK 45 mixes, which sound fantastic. Maybe I'll have to pick this one up too. Agree with you on the stereo box; wish they would re-issue the mono as well.
    Thanks for the review.

I love this box set too...I was surprised it garnered a bit of negativity on some music forums upon release. For me there is something special about listening to the songs as they were presented at 45rpm...and this box I think does a really good job of replicating that exciting sound of the original singles. Andrew from Parlogram did a great video about this set a few years ago

@@igotdarkaether4813 Can't argue with that... I think the couple of gripes I have with that set is the adhesive outer sleeves (sticky part could catch on the sleeve and be a pain) and that they stayed a little too true to the construction of Magical Mystery Tour (booklet can come loose if not careful). And I guess that they made it too much of a limited edition lol

Nothing beats the original red Parlophone 1962 love me do. The one they deleted the all the tapes for do could never press again after the first batch. Every single release of that one since then has been a dub of a red Parlophone UK. I have an early one of these red Parlophone UK level love me do and it's fantastic. Found it in a few singles I bought from someone who's gran had passed away and I gave them about £10. And didn't know everything what was there and only spotted it once I got them home. Bit of a grail.

If you play it like you said, I would recommend that you put it on cassette or reel-to-reel. The reason I have not recommended CDR is that I'm not happy with the sound that one gets from it.

I had the box set and then sold it because I have had my fill of it. It was a nice package and it had a good run, but I hope for some kind of better version of it. It would be nice if they use the actual single master for "Please Please Me" the next time it gets a release.

I heard when this box came out that the sound was really bad, I figured maybe that’s why they are still not sold out. Also, with 45s, you can’t really relax, just as your getting comfortable, you have to get up again and flip the 45. You don’t find?
    Thx for the review!

    • @BrianBringelson

i think most the people that didn't like the sound weren't prepared to hear the original 60's mixes. It's definitely a bit different and maybe even a shock if you are only used to listening to modern music. I think it's wonderful. Warm, present, and really balanced. I do agree with you as far flipping over the 45's. That's why I tend to enjoy one single at a time as opposed to listening to the box front to back (but that's also a lot of fun if you have the time). Thanks for your comment!

The Beatles box is definitely the better presentation overall.
I have many vintage 45's and most are nearly unplayable and sound horrible. They tended to use cheap plastic rather than vinyl for 45's so they were sometimes wrecked after one play. That makes these so great to have on hand

@@MisterBiscuitsOfficial I don't remember that but doesn't really explain the full process like the video. In my opinion they should have included a chapter in the book fully explaining the entire process. Remember even MOFI brags that they source from the original master tapes but conveniently have left out the DSD step until they were caught last year.
