A fire, a dog, a pipe, and solitude in nature. You are about as close to heaven as a man can get on this celestial ball.

For essential blends, I'd say I would need one from each category.
    Virginia: Capstan Blue
Virginia/Perique: Sam Gawith St. James Flake
    English: Nightcap
Dark Fired: HH Old Dark Fired (I prefer the ready rub over the flake)
    Aromatic: C&D Autumn Evening
Burley: Solani Aged Burley Flake (although I smoke more Haunted Bookshop)

I purchased my first pipe and tobacco today I always loved the smell of pipe tobacco and the refined look of the smoker to me its always very classy and upscale. I've been doing my homework for a while now, and thanks to you're channel today was the day I went to my local shop and got hands on and was able to sample and learn a bit about the lifestyle, I'm hooked. thanks for all you do and keep the great content coming..

Hey Alan. I have recently returned to pipe smoking after a 6 or so year hiatus. I am not really sure why I ever left, but I missed what this lifestyle does for me. I won't go into detail because I value privacy as much as you, but suffice it to say that Ive been going through some hard times with stress and trying to be a better man for my wife and children. Picking a pipe back up has helped me tremendously. In my return to the pipe journey I have discovered your channel and enjoy your videos. Keep doing what you're doing sir because you are an inspiration to me. My wife and I have had our sights set for years on the same life you have built with land and a farm and we are closer to that goal than ever. Now, my situation with coming back to the pipe has some relevance to this video because I can share with you the first blends I thought of to jump online and buy. These are blends I tried and enjoyed years ago, circa 2014 when I started smoking pipe and they were essential enough for me to buy now so I could enjoy them today, and well I didn't keep any of the tobacco I had from years ago. Silly me...
    -Peterson University Flake
    -Cornell & Diehl Autumn Evening
    -Cult Blood Red Moon
    -MacBaren Virginia No. 1
    -MacBaren HH Old Dark Fired
    -GL Pease Chelsea Morning
    -GL Pease Telegraph Hill
    -Davidoff Scottish Mixture
    -Hearth & Home Marquee Cerberus
Just a few to cover the bases. There are others that I like, but I wanted these available to me from the 1st bowl. If you are familiar with these you'll see they include everything from English to Aromatic. I like variety as well. Anyway, god bless you and your family and I look forward to the next video.

Glad to see Peretti make the list. Living an hour or so from that shop is a blessing and a curse. Truly one of the great experiences is walking into that shop off Boston Common and stepping back in time. They smoke pipes in there all day, and invite customers to sample and do the same, which in Massachusetts takes some kind of miracle. I think there is a shop in Chicago that is older (Peretti est. 1870) but Peretti is by a long ways the oldest in-house blender in the country, as I understand it. Very old school, high quality tobaccos.
The downside is that I have such love for the old local boys that it has cut into my branching out to other blenders around the world.

The Dunhill 965 you tried may have been the old Murray’s recipe. Towards the end of the Dunhill run, Lane Limited produced the Dunhill line and are now continuing to produce them under their Peterson label.

Thanks again for the stimulating conversation and candor! As we discussed earlier, I'd throw my hat in for Drucquer & Sons Levant as another superior Balkan.
I agree with you in preferring Petersons iteration of 965 ... flavors seem more pronounced. Maybe that's because I've only smoked well-aged expressions of the Dunhill release.
To your very good health, Sir!

Right now if I were to make a list of something essential, I would have to say EMP, plum pudding / special reserve, nightcap. Fair warning I am very new to pipe smoking and don't have tons of blends that I tried, but I have smoked some of the "best" cigars out there and those 3 are heavy hitters flavor wise.

I go through a lot of C&D Pegasus. I do love it!!! And HH Old Dark Fired for the occasional treat. But, when working in the yard, I must confess that a bowel of Prince Albert is satisfaction guaranteed for me. If I’m driving in the Shenandoah Valley then Carter Hall is what I have a taste for. Since these so called codger blends are only available now in the same place you’d buy C&D, GL Pease, McBarron etc and are frequently sold out, they’re as rarefied now as anything else. My honorable mentions are Edward G Robinson and Iwan Ries Three Star Blue.

I enjoyed your comments, sir! My essential blends, which are a combination of most, if not all, of the broader categories, are as follows, in no particular order:
    - Burley Morning Pipe (Ken Byron Ventures). My absolute favorite morning smoke, this pairs perfectly with a cup of coffee topped lightly with cream.
    - Haunted Bookshop (Cornell & Diehl). A controversial pick, one that folks seem to love or hate, with few in the middle. Every time I light some up, I'm surprised all over again at how much I like it.
    - Cowboy Coffee (The Country Squire). Really nice all-day burley and dark-fired Kentucky blend. There is a topping, but it's light and refreshing.
    - Notorious (Ken Byron Ventures). The lat bomb to end all lat bombs.
    - The Oriental Affair (Ken Byron Ventures). KBV makes several outstanding oriental blends, but he's outdone himself with this most recent one.
    - Rouxgaroux (Watch City Cigar). There are many VaPers of which I am fond, but if I had to choose one, it would be this one. KBV's Verge Engine Overdrive is a close second, though.
    - Capstan Blue. I'm sure that Tolkien's tastes bias me, and there are many find Virginia blends, but this one is my most regular go-to.
Thanks again for your entertaining content. I'm enjoying my Pipe Cottage stein and camping mug!

First Amendment (on your recommendation and my top choice), Quiet Nights, Canal Boat, 4th Gen 1855, Lane 1-Q, GL Pease Kensington, And Petersen Early Morning Pipe and Standard Mixture. And I smoke quite a bit of Carter Hall...go figure. Not too exciting but Hey. I have the Boswell Northwoods on order so thanks for the Tip.

  • @MuleSkinnerWS

My journey with aromatics was over almost as soon as it started. I like burleys (especially dark-fired) and latakia. Lately, Peterson Irish Flake, Old Joe Krantz and Haunted Bookshop have been the mainstays in my rotation. I'm a beginner yet, and I do have the unorthodox tendency to throw a pinch of straight dark fired Kentucky or latakia into anything. At this point in my pipe smoking, I'm just eagerly exploring. Smoking heavy, smoky blends has really forced me to smoke more slowly and refine my approach to the pipe. I just ordered a tin of Kentucky Plug, excited to try that. Thanks for the recommendation.

  • @dougowen9873
    @dougowen9873 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Alan, given what you have put on your list, I heartily recommend Gawith and Hoggarth Best Brown #2 which is a nice blend of burley and Virginia with just a smidge of sugar infusion for added sweetness but the sugar does not distract from the tobacco flavors. Another one I love that is relatively obscure is G.L. Pease Stonehenge which is a very tasty combination of Virginias, Burley and Perique. This blend is a collaboration of Samuel Gawith and G.L. Pease and is quite unique and satisfying. I mentioned Robert McConnell's in the comment below, my favorite in that line is their Scottish Flake, a tasty combination of various Virginias and Burley's with just a touch of Oriental, I would wager you will thoroughly enjoy this one. Keep puffin.

I have been exclusively a cigar enthusiast until very recently. I’m still developing my sea legs within the pipe world, and thoroughly enjoying the process. The top of my list at this point would be Presbyterian, Peterson 965, and Peterson Early Morning Pipe. So far, I prefer English tobacco but I look forward to trying some of the better aromatic blends mentioned here. I appreciate your content, sir.

Autumn Evening is still one of my favs since I got your starter kit a couple years ago, yum!
Boswell's Best is a current favorite, such good flavor.
I do like black cavendish and have a big bag of it which I mix a pinch with some tobacco's that aren't great by themselves, a little this and a little that added to make some mighty fine essentials of my own!

Cheers ol' chap. I ain't got 10, but these blends never fail me no matter the mood I'm in, or time of day. These 5 blends are essential to my smoking life and are cellered deep.
    Thomas Radfords Luxury Blend.
    Gawith & Hoggarth Revor Plug
Samuel Gawith Best Brown Virginia (Plug)
    Samuel Gawith Cabbie's Mixture
    Mac Baren HH Latakia Flake.
When I can get it, Germain's Brown Flake, King Charles, & Rich Dark Flake. These are so good they must have a mention, but being not readily available, you can't rely on them being a weekly smoke.

Really good video, and glad to meet Belle (sp?). I too really enjoyed C&D Carolina Red Flake 2022, as I was exploring Virginias. I do like perique and Night Train, Chenet's Cake, and now the 2023 The Beast (not crazy about the name origin on that one) are favorites. Hope your visit to Strauss Tobacconist is good, and I recommend Independence as a great blend with many varieties of tobacco in it. I could not get Sleepy Hollow, but will try again next season. Good luck with the tobacco planting. I'm a former tobacco farmer and remember those days well. I may grow my own again some day. If you get a chance and know a local tobacco farmer, see if you can get a "hand" of dark fired.

Milan’s Rovada is probably my favorite at the moment, that blend has been around since 1912 so it’s stood the test of time. It’s a beautiful light English with 5 different Virginia’s. Their Colonial Pastime is another good blend, it’s a aromatic/English. C&D autumn evening is of coarse a great aromatic. Pegasus is probably my number 1 burley blend I’ve tried so far. Last one I’ll mention is Maltese falcon.

C&D: Billy Budd, Star of the East (similar to Penzance), Pegasus, Winchester, Super Balkan,
MacBaren: HH Old Dark Fired, HH Pure Virginia, Plumb Cake
    Peterson: Standard Mixture, EMP, 965,
    Kramer's Fr. Dempsey
    Grainger, and Presbyterian Mixture

McLelland Creme Caramel/Caramel Rush (another that will be gone once it's gone, but it's my favorite of all time and I still have enough to have a bowl now and then)

I'm finally getting around to commenting a year later. I also enjoy Boswells Northwoods as well as The Country Squire's Northwest Trek. Esoterica Stonehaven is delicious. Druquer & Sons Trafalgar is an exceptional blend. SPC Plumb Pudding Special Reserve is Top 5 for me. Davidoff Flake Medallions are sublime... Bullseye Flake is cheaper and holds its own. I'm broken-hearted that Frog Morton's Cellar is no longer in production. I still have a little but save it when I need a good cry. 😂

It’s always interesting at least me anyway to learn about what other fellow pipe smokers like to put in their pipes. With that in mind here are my favorites. The first five are currently on the market , next are blends that are currently unavailable but have a decent supply in my cellar
    1 Balkan Sasieni
    2 GL Pease Chelsea Morning
    3 Sillems Black
    4 GL Pease Gaslight
5 Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding
    6 McClelland Frog Morton Cellar
    7 Dunhill BB 1938
    8 McClelland Balkan Blue
    9 Orlick Dark Strong Kentucky
10 Just for Him Shortcut to Mushrooms. There they are , as you can see my tastes are all over the place. But that’s the beauty of pipe tobacco. There is something for everyone.

For the last few months, for me, Plum Pudding is the go to. C&D Apricots and Cream, Peterson Standard mixture, and also ODF. For some reason most of the Peterson blends taste the same to me... aside from 965 which is distinct. In fact most English blends to me taste very much alike which is a bummer. I’m fond of spicy rich flavor and plum pudding hits the spot for me always.

      @bcj842 ปีที่แล้ว

I think the Dunhill family Peterson blends all have distinct characters. EMP is peppy and light whereas Nightcap is mellow and has more of that deep latakia flavor. 965 seems to be almost in the middle of the two as far as body. Then along with that is that nice sweet surprise. I really like all of them.

For awhile now my favorite has been Amphora Burley Blend. Although burley dominant, it contains Kentucky and Virginia. I always smoke it in my Stubby Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipe. I love it.

    Appreciate your list, Alan.
I've been an on and off pipesmoker since 1973.
Just a couple weeks ago, after about a 15 year hiatus, I once again picked up the pipe and began partaking of the sacred leaf.
The reason for the hiatus was a heart attack. But everything's been fine for the past few years and because I'm now 70 I figure if I wanted to enjoy my pipes before I shuffle off this mortal coil -- I'd better get crackin'.
Of course, everything changed during those years I was away. McClelland is gone. I could've wept when I found out. House of Windsor is gone. Many others have been bought up or just closed their doors. It's like starting all over again in a way. So many new names to learn too. One nice thing is that the internet has opened the door to awareness of very small blenders. Blenders it was near impossible to know anything about 15-20 years ago. And that's a good thing.
Some of my favorites from before the hiatus that I see are still around (although they may be under new management) are:
    Rattray's Red Rapparee
Esoterica Tobacciana And So To Bed
    Esoterica Tobacciana Penzance
    Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake
    Peter Stokkebye Luxury Twist Flake
    Cornell & Diehl Blockade Runner
Carter Hall (believe it or not)
Keep up the good work. Glad I found your channel. We seem to have a lot in common.

Hi Alan: My experience with all latakia mixtures is that the smokiness fades after a few years. I would hesitate to guess how many years is optimum but I would guess 5 to 7 years is the sweet spot. I am looking foward to the next live stream Keep puffin.

Aw, I love seeing your animals in your videos. They, and your interactions with them are a joy to watch.
I find that especially true when you apologize to the viewers when you believe that they're being bothersome to us. I can assure you that they are not in the least. The behavior of animals toward a person speaks volumes about the character of that person.
Boy, I wish I had known that you were going to visit one of Boswell's shops and stuck around for a while. I live not too far from one of them and would love to have had a bowl or two with you in person.

One of my favorite pipes is the Missouri Meerschaum Little Devil Cutty. I often wonder what the tobacco was like that Anse Hatfield would have smoked in his pipe. I recently saw a video from the Battlefield Trust where they had a full bag of Civil War pipe tobacco in a storage drawer and that increased my pondering. What current blends would you recommend to have the closest experience to what they would have been smoking in their camps during the mid-late 1800's? Thank you so much!

Sillem's is made by Kolhase and Kopp, they manufacture dozens, if no hundreds of various blends. Worth a try is their Fribourg and Treyer line and Robert McConnell's line, both originally blended in Great Britain but when the Brits started making life very difficult for tobaco producers, many of these blends and trademarks were picked up by K and K and Dan Tobacco, the two largest blenders in Germany.
