I was usually very shy around strangers, but I was so fascinated, I just had to know if this man could drive a car, and how he did so. He very kindly took the time to explain to me about the hand controls he had installed on his car.
The modifications to your car are a lot simpler than I expected. I thought maybe the whole driver side would have been modified to have a hand pedal, but it's basically a stick that pushes the existing pedals. That makes changing car easier, both in terms of resale and expenses relating to modifying the next one.
When you said "I'm a 36 year old man who still needs a booster seat at the barber and I'm not embarrassed" Omg.. That gave me EMOTIONS. I'm a trans guy so I'm very very short for a guy, only 4'9, and I'm EXTREMELY insecure about it but when you said that it lifted me up.

Like the way your hand controls have a push down movement to accelerate. Mine have a pull movement, which can get tiring over long journeys. I'll investigate if your style is available here in the UK, for when I change.

Yea. It's not like there are only a handful of people who are disabled or use wheelchairs. I definitely feel like as our world grows certain things could be added to make things easier for any disabled person. Like a second entrance with a ramp that a door moves in instead of out. Something as simple as that could make things better.
Unfortunately commercial buildings by law have to have doors that swing open to the exterior. :( It’s for fire code so that when people are trying to escape a burning building they are not pushing against a door in panic mode. But I agree there should be a ramp.
Most places, especially smaller businesses, the business owner is leasing space and isn’t allowed to modify things that much. There are also s,all businesses just eeking by that would love to do this and many other things but truly can’t afford to.
I bought a used car from a wounded paraplegic Veteran and the car I got from him had all the hand controls like your car. he said he didn't need them out of the car because the VA would pay for the new set up for his new car. It's good you are educating people.
It’s interesting how your hands have also become your legs. Your core upper strength must be so good. Idk if this is tmi but do you ever get pain from all the pressure on them? Or have your arms adapted to it and no longer hurt.
I've seen other people who walk on their hands comment that they eventually get arthritis in e.g. their elbows or shoulders. Humans are amazingly adaptable but arms didn't primarily evolve to walk on so I think there are some disadvantages in the long run.

I had someone who was in a wheelchair got mad at me because I opened the door for them. He said I'm not useless...i said i know you are not i just open the door for anyone who is next to it. But it made me feel like I shouldnt open the door for anyone anymore 😥
He could have just had a rough day 😔. Maybe everyone was doing things for him or he was feeling down within himself. Everyone can react in rude ways sometimes, and maybe not even realize why. Keep being kind ! 👍 We shouldn't let opening doors for others disappear from society. 🌍
Hey I know this reply is a year late. I have a disabled best friend and she explained it to me like this...it's always best to ASK if you can help because sometimes they don't want or don't need your help. For example, she told me to never touch another person's wheelchair or push them without asking if they need help with it. This is more polite from our end and actually for safety too...if they aren't expecting someone to push them or turn off/on the brakes it can be dangerous. Same for holding the door open, same for moving something out of the way ...best to just always ask first. It's polite for us to ask...then we can expect more of a polite response back from them. Hope this helps :)
We have a family friend that has the same controls. When I was young I always wanted to know how she drove but I didn't want to be rude so I never asked. Eventually I realized that she's a friend and she doesn't care so I asked her and she showed me. Pretty cool stuff and actually pretty intuitive.
That was very helpful. I can’t drive anymore because of MS… so I still have my legs. They just don’t do much. I wondered how hand controls worked. Converted Vans to be driven w/ hands by a person in a wheelchair are expensive! Can’t wait till I’m driving again too!

I have spina bifida but I have enough use of my legs that I don’t use hand controls (they’re expensive anyway), I didn’t learn to drive until after I graduated high school because I felt too much pressure and it made me nervous but I’m glad I did learn
Spencer, you're adorable! I've never seen anyone enter their car from the back, but it works perfectly for you. My ex, also a double amputee, has a convertible so he drops the top, transfers himself to the driver's seat and lifts his chair into the back or the passenger seat. Kinda sucks to do this in the rain though!
Super interesting to see how you drive. I'm mildly paralysed on my right side and live in Switzerland. In Switzerland there is a rule however that both of your hands need to be on the wheel pretty much at all times. At first very tricky for me however with a little bit of practice I got the hang of it and can drive now! Wish you all the best :)

I have a Maruti Suzuki CelerioVXi-Auto Gear Shift, I have retrofitted/adapted a hand operated accelerator and a brake retro fitment kit approved by ARAI, Govt. of India, (Thanks to Deccan Motors, Telangana State, India) Still now i have happily safely finish my trip to Anaikatti, Maruthamalai, Topslip, Yercaud and Ooty (all are hill driving) with the above car….Those are wonderful trip…... I am using only single Hand(Left Hand) steering control. Right hand for above said KIT…

Useful info for me. My teenager is disabled and will need this type of hand gas/brake pedal augmentation whenever he starts to show an interest in driving...which he hasn't yet. Gen Z seems to not be as interested in driving as previous generations. Perhaps because of rideshare apps and the internet in general is a way to explore the world.

My grandpa lost his legs later in life. My grandma didn't drive (which wasn't uncommon during that era) so he had his car, a Nova, specially outfitted with push buttons so he could continue to drive. (This was over 50 years ago.) My mom said that she was terrified the first time her dad picked her up to drive her around.

A company I do a lot of work with is Sunrise Medical and they have locations all over the world. They might be able to recommend some places for you locally. I hope this helps!

The worst one of my friends experienced was severe carpal tunnel, but that was fixed with surgery, braces, and lots and lots of ice packs.

My friend has hand control s and in the UK the put the 'blinkers' which we call indicators on a toggle switch on the steering wheel.
