Nice tute, cheers. The drums seemed to be on each of the 4 tracks, when initially recorded? Before they were each deleted before being overdubbed with bass/keys/lead.
Thanks, great tutorial, but I was wondering: what are the advantages of using looper instead of recording into clips in several tracks in session view?
The looper plugin allows you to layer patterns, whereas clips are confined to one active per column. This allows you to stack multiple phrasings for a single instrument, but it makes it a bit more difficult to setup scenes and switch between themes of your song. You can accomplish scenes with looper by setting up additional instruments or rack slots, but you'll need to get creative on how to activate/deactivate multiple channels at once.
I like the idea, nice one :) have you got plans on doing a walk through about how you mapped it? it would be helpful for people who want to use different controllers :D
dude, this is really inspirational. i have two questions -- can you get the midi out from the looper? and how exactly do you assign the controller and loop pedal to control and clear the looper? thanks!
just open ableton, press midi map button, then press on your pedal and you'll see where it is. obvs your keys have to be midi inputted to your soundcard lol mine is cc 64
You can drag Looper's progress indicator (the bars that light up as the loop plays) to any clip slot and it will export the midi from that loop. You can select melody (polyphonic) harmony (monophonic) or drums, but it can be problematic for loops that have multiple overdubbed layers.
Looks nice, only thing I didn't quite understood was why a put it all on the same track? What's the gain versus having the 4 instruments with their loopers on 4 different tracks?
I actually had to go out and buy a on off switch. sustain pedal creates too much room for error. you commented a year ago, so maybe you already solved this
Can someone help me out? clicking the clip play & stop button causes a drum hit to play, i dont know what's causing it in Live 9, any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hi, liked your video, thank you. (English language I know is not very good, I use Google translator) Tell me please how empty erase Loop? the moment when he showed that the set abrasion on the black keys. I would be very grateful for your help, thank you
I've put my instruments rack in a MIDI track and my audio effects rack in a AUDIO track but that's the only way to get the signal coming in through the instrument rack its just not getting picked up from my looper audio effects rack. Anyone know why? Thanks!
Bro can we talk about how you got that effect at the end when you turned the knobs and faders down? It sounded like the beat was about to slow down can get crazy!
i used a beat repeat on the master with the pitch decay knob around 15%. Then used a hipass filter and a simple delay to get that echo effect. Hope that helps
Is there any way to do this in a way that allows to quantize the performances? I know looper is just a straight audio recorder but hoping there's a way to modify this to record actual launch-able clips as you would with normal recording?
you just plug it in to a footswitch plug on a controller or something. I plug mine in to the footswitch input on an mpd32. you can plug it into an interface (if it has a footswitch port) or a midi controller and just assign it like a regular knob or fader.
Doing this track with the looper plug-in seems so pointless. Why not just record each of these parts as a clip in different tracks? Then you don't have to keep deleting all the blank loops, like what he's doing with the piano keys. Seems like the advantage with using the looper effect is when you're doing audio overdubs (like with your voice). Because you can do endless overdubs - which doesn't work in a clip. Using it to just loop a MIDI-based instrument is inferior to just doing a MIDI loop (i.e. particularly because you can't quantize). I guess the only advantage to the setup he demonstrated, is that you can just do it one track - which could be helpful if you already have a lot of tracks to deal with.
Have you found out anything else about how to do this type of looping in a way that allows you to quantize midi? I just don't see how you could ever stack other clips or integrate looper into a produced song unless your performances were absolutely perfect
I think the advantage is that you can loop all instruments with the same midi-trigger, instead of a different record trigger for every clip. Or is that also possible with clips? If so let me know haha :p
I completely agree, although one aspect of Looper that's nice is that instead of requiring a click track to get you started you can establish the track tempo with the start/stop of your first layer. This feature alone makes live improvisation much simpler. What I'd like to see Ableton implement is the ability to overdub in clips (strictly midi, not routing to an audio track) and set track tempo with your first clip. I know that Looper allows you to drag to a clip and export the midi, but this is problematic for loops that have multiple layers (and disruptive/clunky during live performances).
and the creative know-how. and randomly mapping new gear to things like looper. its amazing the things you can do, when you are connected to your music through the things that you own. Love akai P. thx 4 the extension of yourself....weed good one
Prof_Strangeman Official yeah its like hes actually making music with it or something, plus those fucking knob tops fall off if you wink at them the wrong way anyway
Bro u just recorded all the lines on each other and we dont have each looped lines seperarely if u could just disscuss it or a trick that works to me ur e biggest helper tnx
Not only the video content is good, the way it is been described and explained its fantastic. Excellent teacher! Great video.
thank you! Really appreciate it
you can tell this guy is holding back mad swag and trying to be very on point in this tutorial...

Yep. Pretty solid and self-controlled style, just telling us guys how to do it properly.
eloquence + knowledge > Profit! xD
This dude is super chill.
best video you guys have posted for a while, more of this guy pls
His voice is so smooth
Underbelly, great video. Your timing on drums and keys is outstanding. I take it there was no quantizing going on here.?
+Dylan Turbulence i was wondering the same thing.. im such a noob
nope, all live
like a boss
Nice tute, cheers.

Thanks, great tutorial, but I was wondering: what are the advantages of using looper instead of recording into clips in several tracks in session view?
different strokes for different folks. I think the clip approach might actually be more flexible. Maybe you could give us a tutorial ;)
The looper plugin allows you to layer patterns, whereas clips are confined to one active per column. This allows you to stack multiple phrasings for a single instrument, but it makes it a bit more difficult to setup scenes and switch between themes of your song. ***** I'll keep that in mind for the next video :)
This is so retro looking now! Love it! haha!

I have the same question, can you program different gestures (like double tab) when midi mapping??
You can drag Looper's progress indicator (the bars that light up as the loop plays) to any clip slot and it will export the midi from that loop. You can select melody (polyphonic) harmony (monophonic) or drums, but it can be problematic for loops that have multiple overdubbed layers.

hey really good! but the file is not available : /
THE SUSTAIN PEDAL DOES TWO MIDI SIGNALS : MIDI ON AND MIDI OFF, HOW DO YOU SET IT?
I actually had to go out and buy a on off switch. sustain pedal creates too much room for error. you commented a year ago, so maybe you already solved this
where can i get that awesome kick ?
this is really helpful I've done this but routing my looper controls using the IAC Driver
Exactly what I was looking for ! Thanks for the video AND for the template.
Peace.
thanks for watching
Can someone help me out? clicking the clip play & stop button causes a drum hit to play, i dont know what's causing it in Live 9, any help would be greatly appreciated!
Great ! How can I export this audio to mix with a video ? For exemplo record with a camera and ableton next mix it.
Great quality video! Keep it up DJTT

hello there - does your midi foot pedal work in NOTE mode? does this not conflict with midi notes being plaeyd in?
hey does any one know how i would incorporate a live instrument input to the instrument rack?
Definitely got me thinking, thanks.
glad I could help! Thoughts are pretty cool.
I've put my instruments rack in a MIDI track and my audio effects rack in a AUDIO track but that's the only way to get the signal coming in through the instrument rack its just not getting picked up from my looper audio effects rack. Anyone know why? Thanks!
why does my looper doesn't show the chain button??
This is just lovely
Yo the template isnt available for download anymore? Is there another link?
Wow you were on DJ techtool! Your awesome!

GREAT delivery!
is that an m-gear sustain pedal? it can be used for looping as well? where do you input it? into the audio interface?
you just plug it in to a footswitch plug on a controller or something. I plug mine in to the footswitch input on an mpd32. you can plug it into an interface (if it has a footswitch port) or a midi controller and just assign it like a regular knob or fader.
DJ Showbot How do. you have to assign it? I can only assign one action to my pedal
How is the piano hooked up? Through midi chord or USB?
hi man ! congrats for your video. very nice ! I can't do the download of the template. can you send to me?
