No she phookin ISNT underrated 🤦♂️ Maybe by YOU , but the rest of us know exactly how good she was and her place in the pantheon of female singers .. ffs 👍🏴
Petula Clark was the "Queen" of the British invasion because not only was she good, she was very appealing to everyone of all ages. even the parents liked her lol. She had already been child star and singer in British TV and movies before she ever landed in the USA. She had a great partner in songwriting hits in Tony Hatch as well. He was phenomenal and I appreciated his work the more I learned about him. Over all Petula was a sweetie to everybody, appreciated her fans. Very classy. But this doesn't take away from the greatness of Dusty, she was a different kind of singer with more soul and less of the "show business " approach that Petula had been trained in. These two really were very appealing in the USA. Lulu would have made more hit records here too if they had given her the right material...a fantanstic singing voice and a big smile - dynamite delivered in a smaller package. Cilla Black is really the one underappreciated...they never gave her a flippin' chance in the USA. Again it could have been the material and not the singer - she obviously was a superstar in England. Lovable person also. Perhaps Shirley Bassey and Helen Shapiro weren't given much of a chance in the USA either.
This song. It was written by the brilliant songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Stan Getz recorded an instrumental version. Dusty was the first to record the lyrics. Many artists have covered it including Isaac Hayes and Nina Simone. If done right, like this version, it is a romantic song for dancing....and passionate moments.
This is one of the great British female singers from the 60's. She had such a beautiful unique voice & covered many genres (blue-eyed soul, pop ,ballads, country, jazz). "Son Of A Preacher Man" is her most famous song. But she had a lot of hits such as "Wishin' & Hopin'", "I Only Want To Be With You", "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "I'll Try Anything", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" & many more.
Great songs there. Fun fact : Cameron Diaz absolutely mangles 'I don't know what to do with myself' in a (deliberately) cringey karaoke performance in the 1997 rom-com My Best Friend's Wedding. The clip is on TH-cam, - stuff of nightmares. 😳🤭 "Wishing and Hoping" is also in that movie, in the humorous opening montage. And the best Son of a Preacher Man cover I ever heard is by British soul singer Joss Stone, she was kind of known for it. One of the first songs I downloaded to a device as a kid. It's on TH-cam. She's kind of my hero also for always performing barefoot; she hates fancy shoes and refuses to limp around in stilleto torture devices like other singers. You tell 'em, Joss! My toes and I applaud you.
The best singers know when to push and when to back off, they are about the song content and not themselves. Dusty is one of the greats because of that. Linda Ronstadt was the same way.
I love it! I never heard it by Dusty!!! I am familiar with the "Sergeo Mendez and Brazil 66" version. This is so beautiful! Thanks, Jay, for turning me on to it!
Dusty's version of Look of Love is by far the best. Listen to her Windmills of Your Mind... perfection. If you want to check out more Petula Clark, listen to Don't Sleep in the Subway or Kiss Me Goodbye.
You ask "How can you not love this?", but the song was only a moderate hit back in the day. There hasn't been a voice like hers since she passed. I doubt there will ever be another like her.
Dusty Springfield is One of my all-time favorite female vocalist of the 60's and 70's . She has such a sensuous vocal and this song is one of my all-time favorite songs from her. I have 2 albums by her. I love Dusty. ♥♥♥
Written, composed, and arranged by Mr. Burt Bacharach. This song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and featured in the movie “Casino Royal”. His huge catalogue of songs were all beautiful, sensual and melodic. Great reaction! This was Dusty’s masterpiece.
This played during the scene in Casino Royale where Peter Sellers is romancing Ursula Andress. Dusty totally created the mood of the scene. You really should do a movie reaction to Casino Royale. It was perhaps the best spoof of the James bond movies.
These types of songs remind me of my youth and the songs my mother loved. I am so surprised how much you like these songs. You have come a long way man.
You may consider doing a review on the duet she did with the Pet Shop Boys in the late 80s. I think it was called "what have I done to deserve this." An odd combination of artists, but it worked.
I couldn't help but smile when you mentioned Petula Clark and Doris Day. 4 years ago you wouldn't have had a clue who they were. I've been watching you since before Amber joined and bro', it's been a blast! I'm 73 now, and I've been able to time travel with the music you've reacted to. Thank you and Amber for all the smiles and tears and the other emotions and memories of when I was a younger me.🤗❤️✌️
One of my favorite female vocalist of all time… To me highly underrated to most that know music top-of-the-line! I was very sad when she passed early in her life, but she left us a legacy of great music. May she rest in peace🙏🙏🙏‼️‼️‼️
Agree, Jay! Late 50's and '60s (and '70s) music the very best for female singers. This song, written by writing duo, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, appeared in the 1967 Bond movie, "Casino Royale" sung by Dusty and it was Oscar-nominated for that year's best song. "Wishin' and Hopin'" from 1964, went to #6 on the charts and it was also written by Bacharach and David. They certainly don't make 'em like they used to.
If you liked this YOU REALLY NEED to check out Roberta Flack's "The First Time Every I Saw Your Face." It's a little slower, but even more intimate than this, and as beautiful as this song is and Dusty's voice is, Roberta's voice and that song are twice as beautiful.
A trivia tidbit: “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” was offered to Dusty and she refused it. Not sure why. Then it was offered to Roberta Flack and she made it a hit!
Already reacted to this song 3 years ago when Sidney Poitier passed away. I agree on Jay should react to the movie too. Is the movie reaction channel on pause?...
Burt Bacharach and Hal David (songwriters) at the top of their game, and Dusty *brings it home* ! "I can hardly wait to hold you, feel my arms around you"…just classic. Featured in the first film version (there was a TV adaptation before that) of "Casino Royale", the first James Bond novel. (The film was basically a disaster but in an entertaining way.)
This lovely song brings to mind other 60s songs written by Burt Bacharach & Hal David, especially those recorded by Dionne Warwick, such as DON'T MAKE ME OVER (1962) & ANYONE WHO HAD A HEART (1963). They share something in phrasing & cadences. Good stuff!
Love this song! I was 8 when this came out and I remember my parents dancing to it in my living room thinking they were crazy! Great memories! Thanks Jay
This was the first song I bought to play on the 4-track stereo in my 1967 SS Chevelle. Check out Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66. Their song The Girl From Ipanema was sung by a young woman (I forget her name). Great song
I remember her when I was growing up. Even as a kid I loved listening to her. The song just sounds sultry. I can just imagine her being on state in Vegas singing at a casino.
Prior to her solo success, Dusty was in a group called (obviously) 'The Springfields' with her brother Tom (the successful songwriter who wrote a lot of hits for The Seekers). The Springfields biggest hit was 'Island of Dreams.'
This song cannot be duplicated. Sure there’s a few versions but Dusty was born to sing it she owns it. The effortless soul in her voice cannot be duplicated and that’s not an opinion that is fact.
If you’ve never done Dusty singing I Only Want To Be With You then you’re missing out on probably her most upbeat performance. 🔥🔥🔥 I had such a crush on her as a teen, only to find out decades later that she was gay. They had to largely remain closeted because it was unfortunately considered to be a career killer to go public at that time. Dusty was indeed special.
The type of song of that era...I could hear Leslie Gore singing that one. They are such fun upbeat songs. You hear that on the way to work and you walk into the place with a better attitude to get through the day.
*@thomastimlin1724* What a great song, no buildup, it hits the ground running and never lets up the whole way through. Like you said, it picks you right up and stays with you.
Thank you for this! Definitely has a "feel" to it. I am going to echo what's listed below. We are more than ready for some Petula Clark. "Colour my world", "Round every Corner" are just a couple of her stellar tunes.
This so takes me back to that 60's springtime of new and fresh sophistication in popular music. I think you heard part of this in one of the Austin Powers movies. Checkout Dusty Springfield's cover of the Van Morrison classic - Tupelo Honey.
I first heard the version by Gladys Knight but I think there's something about Ms Springfield's voice that elevates it, Dionne Warwick and Diana Krall have both done good versions. Another of Burt Bacharach's legendary song writing
This is actually one of two different recordings that Dusty did of this song in 1967. This one is the soundtrack version for the James Bond spoof Casino Royale with Peter Sellers. A few months later, she recorded a singles version for the Philips record label. The latter is about 30 seconds shorter and is the one that usually gets more air play on the radio. The singles version uses more reverb on the vocal, adds a lush string background, and Dusty repeats the chorus after the sax solo. Instead of ending with a brass outro fade out like the soundtrack version, the single ends with a yearning tag line from the sax. I actually prefer the way Dusty’s voice is recorded here on the soundtrack, with greater purity and more forward in the mix. However, the strings on the Philips recording add a dreamy quality that I like, and the arrangement of the song’s ending is more memorable. You can listen to the Philips version here: th-cam.com/video/8ghDJWJEML8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HAhJUX59LzMcuH4P Hard to believe this single only made it to number 22 on the Billboard charts 😮.
This Bacharach-David-written song was hugely popular in 1967 and was recorded by many famous singers after Dusty. In 1968, Brasil '66 had a Top 5 hit with it and Isaac Hayes sings a great soulful version on his Live at the Sahara album.
The album 'Dusty in Memphis' is well worth a listen. It used to be included near the top of polls of the greatest albums of all time (don't know how it would fare in such polls now-a-days).
Classic real dame of 60's music. Her brother, Tommy, was a great songwriter probably best known for writing two of the biggest hits fir The Seekers: I'll never find another you...and...Georgy Girl. He was just more in the background. Both superb musicians. Both dead. Both deserve being remembered for their contributions to the wonderful 60's sounds.

I agree, she was around long before her hit Downtown and my favourite is the Charlie Chaplin number ‘This is my song’!
I’m glad you’re keeping up the Female Friday.

"Spooky" is another great track from Dusty.

One of the all time great voices. Dusty could belt when she needed but also knew the power of a whisper ❤
The best singers know when to push and when to back off, they are about the song content and not themselves. Dusty is one of the greats because of that. Linda Ronstadt was the same way.
No one sounded like Dusty, she had one of those unique voices that are instantly recognizable. ✌️
I love how the saxophone mimics her voice. Amazing recording. She was so good
I like a Sergio Mendes version too~! ^^
The sax is very prominent in this. Do we know who's playing sax? Guess I'll Google it.
Her live duet with Burt Bacharach on A House Is Not A Home is just about the loveliest most moving duet ever.

Her Windmills of Your Mind is fire!
Downtown is upbeat!❤ she’s sang a love song I used to sing a lot but can’t remember the name! It will come to me later…..❤😂

As a teenage boy I found it impossible not to be in love with Dusty. I'm 75 and nothing's changed.
Such a sweet voice, that even when she gives her power, it’s still soft and sensual. Best version of this song in my opinion.
Adore her may she R.I.P. Her voice is so unique, I've never heard anyone close to it. Every and any song she ever sang is fantastic.
One of my cats is named Dusty because, when she was a kitten, the look ... of love ... was in ... her eyes.
Your lady would probably love this track with it''s wonderful horns & Sax.
Dusty sang the original and delivers the best rendition of this Bacharach/David classic standard.
Believe the song was in the 60’s version of Casino Royal.
@neighborhoodcatlady6094
Yes.
This is a classical masterpiece with Dusty sultry, jazzy and soulful singing and top notch instrumentals by talented artists as well.🎶🎼🎵
The only other version that comes close to this one is by Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66. More of a groove, as opposed to Dusty's sultry sexy performance.
Dusty is just one of the all time best singers, period.
