If you ever see the backside of those tickets, you’ll find that they’re a dark brown-gray color. It’s like the little stripe on a New York MetroCard or SFBART ticket, just across the entire card.
I don’t think its magnetic because magnetism can leak out of both cards at the same time even when they are not that close together and cause a bad read. It could be light and barcode driven because it punches a hole in the ticket at the destination to make sure it can’t be used again. It also needs to have the start location and destination info so it knows that you paid enough for the trip. They wouldn’t want someone paying for a 1 hour bullet train trip and riding it for 5 hour trip, it’s inconceivable that all that info would be magnetically encoded into a paper ticket that would be discarded. It’s likely reads a barcode printed on the sides of ticket. The ticket reader takes multiple tickets at once but it goes through the reader one at a time then combined back at the end and pushed out together, but it does super fast. That’s not all. The machines that sell the tickets can also take multiple cash bills of different denominations at the same time. If that isn’t amazing enough, commuter train ticket selling machines can dispense prepaid rail cards too. Basically it’s a card you can put money into up to 20,000 yen ( 180 US dollars give or take) which can be used to pay for rides on train and even buy things at all the shops and most restaurants in the rail station, and convenience stores and certain shops and restaurants in Japan. The rail cards use NFT (the tap to pay technology, and not the digital art ponsi money scheme).
In all your videos I really appreciate how you explain things that are confusing. As a visitor I would assume everyone else knows the system and I am just being foolish. It is nice to be reminded that even people who travel the area regularly can run into confusion.
You are such a nice and humorous person! And you like to travel and you are making really good and highly enjoyable content. You took us to so many journeys and even showed us the little funny mistakes, the happy little accidents. I will say, the self-deprecating humor is quite amusing in these videos. Also, I'm guessing with the hamburger steak restaurant; they must grind their own meat in-house. I don't know how the standards are in Japan, but here in the US it's fine to cook your hamburgers to a medium rare or rare if you're actually grinding your own meat, so I'm assuming that may have something to do with it.

You always highlight how english is so confusing, even for me, a native speaker. Yeah, in Germany trains are always late and/or broken. Traveling by train seems so relaxing in Japan because you know it will work and you will always be on time...

I cherished my round-trip from Shinjiku to Kyoto via Nagoya. Wonderful experience on Shinkansen but I prefer slower trains to enjoy the scenery and avoid walls, more walls and tunnels. Your travel videos are simply awesome. Thank you.
Excellent as always! I remember visiting Japan in 2016 and catching Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano and then Kanazawa, the use of dual tickets for different parts of the journey was most fascinating! We were able to keep the tickets by asking the gate attendant if we could, and he let us pass through once he manually stamped the ticket as cancelled.

I used to live in Furukawa (now part of Osaki) in Miyagi Prefecture. So nice to see some of that area in this video. I really enjoyed my time in Morioka, too. And gyu-tan is one of my favorite dishes. Jealous!

Another interesting and entertaining video! Bullet trains are a very different experience than the Ferry service. Speed has it's advantages certainly but also it's drawbacks. I always find the beautiful cuisine choices in Japan very visually tempting. Unfortunately I can't smell the aroma though. As long as You enjoy it, we're good! Happy Travels Always!!

Food in Japan is mostly very good. It’s rare to get a bad meal and there are lots of surprisingly good and surprisingly cheap options.

I loved the rumble of the Tokaido Shinkansen made after leaving Tokyo Station. So invigorating.
