It can have both meanings, but I always thought it meant that Jibril put his hands on the prophet’s thighs as an expression of closeness and love. I will consult local scholars and put their view ان شاء الله

After reviewing the issue w/ some schools, I got answers agreeing w/ your view, so that Jibril عليه السلام sat as if he was doing Tashahud in Salah (which is the way a learner is supposed to sit in front of their teacher). However, there are other valid opinions agreeing with what was stated by the speaker. So both opinions are respected in our tradition.

Scholars have seen both to be valid on his own or on the prophet’s ﷺ
