This dance is such a beautiful metaphor for the greater meaning of life. A group of people moving through their steps individual steps, making a chain of events which lead forward in the music, balancing out evenly for all the dancers involved.
Vava Vadmal or Swedish Weaving Dance. Represents the weaving of the vadmal cloth - so a vocational folk dance. You see the workings of the loom, testing the cloth for strength, rolling it up etc. Done in other parts of Scandinavia (and similar to dances done in the Hebrides, and even Latvia) - but Sweden is generally acknowledged as the source.
I learned this as a child dancing with Barnklubben Lucia #2 in Brooklyn, NY. They do a very good performance of this choreographed folk dance called Väva vadmal (weave woolen serge), written down probably in the 1920s. What is surprising is how old the dancers are.... I learned this dance when I was 12!
@EricVancouver How is it surprising, that these dancers are older people? These are dances from a time gone past ( 200 years + ). My guess is, that younger and middle aged people are busy living their daily lives in the 21st century. Don't get me wrong, I personally like this traditional music and dance ( I would not click on this video, if I didn't ). But let's face it, this is not part of everyday life in Scandinavia today. It seems like many descendents of migrants thinks, that everything stayed the same, as the day their ancestors left their country of origin?

Sweden is just a plan old city you would be able to see in every country that have multi culture. This doesn't exist in Sweden. Well, maybe a small village in the woods probably looks like this but the rest of Sweden is just an other "civilized" country.

This was already "history", when hundred thousants migrated to the Americas and Australia etc. I was born and raised on a Danish dairy-farm, and I like this kind of music a lot. And it is part of World Music, just as music from all other cultures of the world.
