I am retired now but I used to work in the centre of London - when a Guards Band passed it made me very proud to be British. And if I was walking along the street I could not help but fall into step.........I did not spend very long on a parade ground (when I was quite young) but it all comes back to you very quickly.
M Morgan. I remember being told as a young recruit that us civvies would soon be turned into soldiers. 'You'll realise it when amongst those civvies you're the only ones in step'!! It was true lol.
Absolutely Love this, thank you very much for taking the time to video this and to share it, it really does make you proud to be British, no country does it better. Being ex military I could sit and listen to this all day long, thank you again.
Hi all you ex Bandsmen & Women but most of all you Drummers male are female, listening to the marches takes me back 1960s Late 70s but the Corps of Drums, they pride of ALL Regts, me ex 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regt, Corp of Drums ,finished up as Bass Drummer now l know were the arthritis came from Arrr but worth it , so be f like me retired, are still serving , let's hope they don't cut anymore of our Regts down once gone no more wonderful music, so keep our service men & women safe & our Bands & Drums going , God Bless them all, l'm getting B soft put it down to age !!?
Washington Grays by C.S Grafulla was composed for a the band of 8th Regiment of the New York Militia from the Bronx in 1861. It was very popular with high school bands 50 years ago ( we used to play it from memory). In recent decades it has been played by the US Marine Band at Presidential Inaugurations just before the entrance of the new president and vice president to the platform. Listen for it next January.
Washington Greys is the First March Played by the Massed bands of the Guards division as They March from Wellington Barracks to Horse Guards Parade for the first Performance of Beating retreat the Corps of drums perform Buttons in twos by Thomas Birkett a former Drum Major in the Coldstream Guards This is followed by The King's Guard by Keith a Stiring March which cuts out when The Bands arrive at Horse Guards
Drum Majors Seen: Drum Major WO2 Tony Taylor, Coldstream Guards; Drum Major John Smillie, Irish Guards; Senior Drum Major WO2 Scott Fitzgerald, Coldstream Guards; Drum Major WO2 Maurice Brown, Scots Guards; Drum Major WO2 Steven Staite, Grenadier Guards.
In our day 50s/60s/70s if you marched alongside a band you kept in step with the band whats gone wrong maybe there for security but does not stop anyone marching in step becoming very slovenly
Why don't we see the cream if the British Army ?? the Corp of Drums especially the Guards Regts OK see the Bands but the real soldiers are the Drummers in any I infantry Regt l'm ex 1st Royal Anglian Regt Drummer ( bass drummer) be nice to see drummers , well it would
They used to be real bearskins, many years ago, these days they are synthetic. Same with the Leopard skin the bass drummers have over them to protect their uniform from the drum, used to be a real Leopard! Now all synthetic.
@@Robinmuk I was just curious how the hats were obtained. I was wondering if there was some official royal bear hunter who went around shooting bears and then skinning them and then leaving the rest of the carcass to rot. I realize this is cynical but humans are capable of such appalling cruelty and stupidity that if I found out that this was actually the case I would not be surprised...

Nothing more than a guards band to stir the excitement and happiness in you. So many different marches and very pleasant

amazing sound. great blend I can hear all the parts clearly. not easy to do when you're outside and with a large band. great job
brilliant tune to March to,you can tell by the step and straightness of the bands, great to listen To!
I heard the unison step when the brief pause in music occurred . Wow!
I was in Horse Guards for Beating Retreat, which was great, but your recording captures a bit more of the ceremonial. Thanks

The march "Washington Grays" sure sounded good with the massed bands. It definitely is a large band composition.
BR///// It has been around since the era of the American Civil War.

How many bears had to die in order for them to have those hats?
