dude, I fucking love the cure. I'm really glad you got to covering them. I was a young teen metal head when I first heard the "Head on the door" album. It really opened me up to a whole world of new music. It showed me the error of my ways and inspired me to play. Most importantly, it inspired me to look into all sorts of music. In some strange happenstance, I would have never found King Crimson or Dead can Dance etc....without The Cure.

For all the times I've gone back through your older videos looking for ones I haven't seen yet, how did I ever miss THIS??? My favourite band performing my favourite song!!
The thing I love the most about Robert Smith's voice is that it's not perfect, and that's what makes it perfect for the lyrics he writes. He became the singer of the band by default, because no one else could sing. He considered himself a guitar player, not a singer. And maybe for that reason, he's not so "precious" about his voice, and has always been willing to use it in different ways, depending on the atmosphere he's trying to create in a song (if that makes sense, I know what I mean, but I'm not sure I'm explaining it properly).
I love the way he tailors his voice to each song. The voice he sings "Lullaby" in is completely different from the voice he sings "Pictures of You" in which is completely different again from the voice he sings this song or "Friday I'm In Love" in. And, of course, each of those songs creates a very different mood.
When you're at a Cure show, which can last 3-3 1/2 hours, his voice gets pitchy, it cracks, he inevitably messes up the lyrics tons few songs...and everyone in the crowd loves every second of it. Doesn't matter if he forgets the words, we'll sing them for him. 🖤🕷️🖤
Finding this video just made my night. And now I'm going to go listen to some Cure!!

And as a sidenote, about a year ago you did an analysis of Taj Farrant. I just listened to his latest rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Oh my God. Special memories evoked every time I listen to them. Glad I got to see them in the 80s. Robert's vocals are still timeless. He is unique. So is his style of playing. His lyrics are so very good... he's a fantastic songwriter!
"Close To Me" is my favorite...

Oh, Fil, if you're a fan of Gary Numan, perhaps you'd like to do an analysis on him? I practically WORSHIP Gary Numan. I fell in love with him ever since I was a very small child and I was watching SNL with my oldest sister Roxanne and he was the musical guest. I was hooked. I remember he sang "Cars" (of course) and "Praying To The Aliens". And thankfully I got to go see him perform many years later and meet him and his wife Gemma and hang out with them at their hotel room. For about three hours! I was most honored. Gemma liked me and invited ME to hang out with THEM. We were standing in the audience next to each other during Gary's performance. She befriended me and started talking to me and we hit it off! One of the highlights of my life spending time with Gary Numan (one of my idols!) and having him talk to me and sharing his life with me like I was one of his friends!🙏💖

Nice breakdown, Fil. The eighties brought us such a variety of talent. I loved The Cure, The English Beat, Duran Duran, The Fixx, along with Dokken, Triumph, Leppard’s early albums, etc. Will you please do an analysis of Queensryche? Chris DeGarmo was an amazing guitarist (and, like Bruce, a talented pilot). Geoff Tate had an impressive vocal range. Take Hold of the Flame might be a good one. I’ll look for a live show from them. Too bad we didn’t have cellphones back then; I saw them for every tour in LA.

Once again, you gave us a great analysis and guitar lesson/demonstration on one of The Cure's most popular songs. Being a rock and metal head in high school, I wasn't into this genre until a neighbor gave me The Head On The Door. After listening, I really enjoyed it and that branched me outside of my "box" of music. Another band that I believe got misunderstood was Bauhaus. They got the Goth imagine, but if you listen, not all of the music is dark. Ahh the press and their labels! 🙄 Thanks Fil! 🤘🏻❤️✌🏻

  • @TorToroPorco
    @TorToroPorco 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The 80s was of course the pinnacle of the new romantic movement. It could be perceived as a movement against the guitar oriented blues rock & roll bands since the guitar was no longer front and center. But it was also a time of great melodies that owed its roots to pop music of earlier decades in the 50s and 60s. I thought The Cure stood out from the rest because the guitar was still a big part of their unique sound, there just weren't those obligatory self indulgent blues guitar solos in the middle of every song. I get a kick out of how many of their hard rock contemporaries are fans of their work including Trent Reznor who inducted The Cure into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. And no other band of that genre covers the range of subjects that they did, nor exhibit a sense of whimsy and fun mixed in with an ever present sense of broodiness.

Left handed guitarist just as rare as left handed violinist and people who play left handed viola. I know I am practicing left handed viola and violin for now and later I will guitar left handed. It has a uniqueness to quality of sound vibrato and I know those instruments specially made for me and other people like this, it's not just flipped the instruments and the strings along with it like 'backwards'.(Note I think Mr. Jimi Hendricks did do that left handed thing with his guitar, Fil will verified).
So good evening fan and Fil, just answering the fan who wondered to know from you Fil about left handedness. I reckon it's no different than being right handed at anything, just distinct, in my opinion, however I am not Mr. Fil Henley who is brilliant and a patience teacher of music. By the way Fil, great analysis here always and all of them lately and the live streams last night Saturday was awesome amazing enjoy myself , as I did live stream Tuesday. If you ever want to analyse an artist who combines a whole range of different musical styles into his songs, try Steven Wilson. This song has got so many musical influences and interesting combinations, it's hard to catch them all! Permanating: th-cam.com/video/Yq-FFEZ2m7s/w-d-xo.html

The Cure is very underrated I find. Mötley Crüe and Iron Maiden just took the audience away from them. Man Robert Smith can sing.

Rumflitoo! What a guplud display with the juffy juffy hair and fancy carpets! Risky! What if someone dropped their Pot Noodle?!!! Shukfut, indeed. Ahhhhhh, The Cure! Lovely lads. Chuckles galore and a good old wevdet for the slabton, and I mean that very sincerely. Kodhot!!!

You're not 100% right about these bands(that they cannot be classified by their looks).... Japan's "Visu kei" stream is based solely on visual aspects.

@@wingsofpegasus Of course, but, see, we have Dir en Grey, which was originally power metal/alternative rock, then switched to alternative metal, then to nu metal, then back to alternative metal. We have X Japan that is power/thrash metal. We have Malice Mizer, who, for most of their existence, weren't a metal band(istead prog/gothic/neoclassical/electro). We have Aldious, which is power metal/pop-punk/gothic metal. We have Exist-Trace, which is metalcore/power metal. We have L'arc-en-Ciel, that is prog/alternative rock. We have Versailles, which is symphonic power/gothic metal. Yet all these bands are put into "visu kei" just because they use flamboyant costumes.

Fil, please check out "Suzanne Vega: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert" from Feb. 10, 2014 performed with brilliant guitarist and producer, Gerry Leonard, who gave David Bowie, his unique layering of sound that was nothing short of miraculous. Check out the hypnotic guitar "bells" Gerry inserts near the end of Vegas' "Tom's Diner."
Also, check out the song in the same video called "Luka," which is the name of the girl who "lives upstairs on the second floor" and is the victim of domestic violence. "Luka," by the way, means "wound" in Indonesian. A name for the girl aptly chosen to correlate with the nature of the lyrics.
And just continue what you're doing by bringing depth and understanding to the music we listen to. Thank you Fil.

Robert's voice is like time machine ❤ Perfect.
I get very frustrated when people say 80s music is horrible. So many great artists came from that time. If you want to say top 40 80s music wasn't very good, that's a different matter but most top 40 music no matter the period isn't great - Closet Goth Chick

In retrospect the 80's were pretty good. Or maybe it's today's music,, or I'm just getting old lol. I'll take pretty much any 80's artist or band over anything by Cardi B or Meagan Trainor? I may have misspelled her name

Just to get a rise out of people, I used to say that there hasn't been any good music written since 1972... Some people would get downright hostile about it. lol
