I see a lot of people saying they 'can't' do this or it's impossible even with the note for note breakdown. I'm probably regurgitating what's already been said but a practice I use when learning something more intricate is to not only slow it down but to break it down by section. A great deal of learning something is committing it to memory, and letting your muscle memory do the work instead of getting all jumbled up overthinking a phrase. The first three notes here are all wholetone. So take that first pattern and get it fluid, then add the next set of three or four notes, and so forth and so on. Practice it piece by piece until you have the entire pattern. When you take on the entire pattern all at once it might seem overwhelming, but the pattern is played one note at a time.
Hey Rick! great tutorial video, now I get to crack the code of what you've talking about under the heading "planting technique". It's like having a momentary epiphany, when I tried to do this exercise slowly, very slowly, I came to realize that falling-down-the-stairs [sic.] movement that my picking hand did. Now a whole new window opened to delve into your style (as a self-taught quarter-pro guitarist, I've been playing for 20+ years). Love you man, sincerely love you!
Thank's Rick for your video's, you're the man, alway's straight to the point, with fantastic tip's, i worked some of your legato exercise and arpegio's and it already improved my playing a lot so thank's again man :)
That’s brilliant I have to slow the video to half speed to pick out what he’s playing 😂 what a great warmup/practice piece though I love the little slide bit best it makes the whole lick very slippery
I would really like to see more videos on improv. Specifically, using scale patterns, arpeggios, and note targeting in order to navigate across the fretboard over more basic chord progressions. I play at church and we don't really play any modal chord progressions.
apologetic27 surely ur church appreciates u be more apologetic and humble little piece of... well practice makes perfect and u can do it just work hard - or maybe u cant and dont have that extra talent
Rick, Please cover Gary Moore - Loner , I wanna see with your style, pleaseeeee do it for me, i'm your fans from Indonesia :( please read my comment :(
Great playing Rick, very inspiring indeed. Do you play any acoustic guitars and have any acoustic guitar lessons ? I don't have an electric as yet. It'll probably be an Ibanez, your reviews are helpful. Tx. -don
It's easy playing this at this speed. First thing is, record yourself playing this at your fastest pace, then double the speed of the video. Okay, so maybe I'm still not as fast, but at least I'm half way there!
Hey man, great stuff! My buddy a guitarist said wow! His accent is cool...any recommendations on theory and what mood chords can express for beginners?
Fun,Fun,Fun but I got hit with a shoe cause my wife said it sounded to jazzy so I switched to my Mesa recto and jem 77 In d tuning and cranked it up through a Maxon pedal and Vox wah, but I just got the other shoe. Some folks are just old school metal to the bone
It seems to me to play legato the best for a guitar is to avoid hammers and pull offs played next to each other as a pull off sounds so differently to a hammer on. The goal of convincing legato is to make all the notes sound as close in timbre and tone as possible. On a piano you would play a note and then end that note slightly after the next note is played trying to give the effect of continuity almost like a Theremin sound. To do this on a guitar you would pick much more notes than you would think and use pivot points much more which is where the hammers and pull offs are used in succession So many people today think the John Patitucci or Paul Gilbert style very fast H/ Pull offs are legato when in fact they are not. Alan Holdsworth style is legato at it's best for me:)
Dumb question. Is this the basic key to sweep picking? It really sounds similar to me. I cannot figure out that technique,,but I think I can do this. Thanks.
jime6688 sweeping involves playing each note with the pick, typically one note per string. this is different. there's gonna be lots of sweep tutorials on TH-cam
I thought I was a decent guitar player, but trying to do this makes me want to give up again, and I just bought a nice Jackson, again,3rd one in two years, the others are gone, guess this one will be too
Bro... 😳 I just spend $350 on a yngwie malmsteen signature pickguard with pickups and honestly after seeing this I'm gonna keep my guitar stock and just give up on life 😂
Rick , please bro, you forgot to show us how to up the scale. I will appreciate. Show us what to do, like way you taught to down the scale. Thank you very much!
First - THANKS RICK! Next … so there really is no "Free Legato™"? In other words, there's no over-all system where you don't have to be too specific about when to pick, pull-off, or hammer … but instead, a general system where you can just use some all-round technique to pretty much "legato-ise" your playing - in the same way alternate picking is to the efficiency of picking? As, for now, it seems like, to "legato-ise" your playing, you pretty much have to learn specific hammer, pick & pull patterns - in the same way you have to learn specific sweep-picking patterns - and hopefully - get so good at integrating those techniques into your playing - that the seams can't be heard? I'm not saying there isn't awesome expressive power to be had by channeling your inner Holdsworth, but it appears that to do this, you have to build up a technique vocabulary first. Since there is no over-all technique that grants you a "semi-free-be", where you can just spend a few weeks working it up, and get pretty darn fast for most things - just as there's no "semi-free-trick" to learning French? ( ie "Adopt a French Accent! 70% of the time - you'll be fine" … ask Steve Martin about that one )
I have to warm up before doing this warmup
Yeah funny ! What does he do after he warmed up??
You guys can do this? ;o
Rechtsreflex 🤣🤣🤣
😂
"Warm up"
Okay.
V HAS COME TO its not that hard
Much of ricks playing sends a cold shiver down your spine as he makes it all look and sound easy so a LONG warm is advised often spanning yrs..lol.
This is my dream goal to be able to do on the guitar... its Rick's "warm up" lmfao
You have to do nice and slowly bro, nice and slowly
I see a lot of people saying they 'can't' do this or it's impossible even with the note for note breakdown.
I'm probably regurgitating what's already been said but a practice I use when learning something more intricate is to not only slow it down but to break it down by section.

Thank you. Your tip really help me out.
Rick " My warm ups are so hard you won't be able to play them even after you've warmed up" Graham.
His warm up sounds cooler than anything I ever played lol
How can 50 people give this a thumbs down? That beats me. Awesome technique.

You say, "Nice and slow."
I say, "Good thing TH-cam lets me play your 'nice and slow' it a 50% speed."
I play at the speed of a carrier pigeon
Sounds awesome. I love the chromatics thrown in. Can't wait to learn this one.
This guy is just lights out badass. Absolute SAVAGE
It’s really clever how he made this pattern able to be repeated seamlessly up a whole step every time through the pattern.
Really helpful and explained very well. An excellent teacher.
Thanks for being so mercenary! Congratulations! Cheers to all your Mister M students!
Rick Graham.....hmm...this Brit blows me away. Fantastic work, Rick!
your videos always have a real nice 'look' to them Rick. could you shed some light on how you achieve this?
one hell of a lick to "warm up" with lol rick is such a monster player, i wish my technique was half as good as that
This is a great lick. Appreciate your time and knowledge.

Thank's Rick for your video's, you're the man, alway's straight to the point, with fantastic tip's, i worked some of your legato exercise and arpegio's and it already improved my playing a lot so thank's again man :)

Wow very Holdsworthian!
Great playing Rick, very inspiring indeed.
Do you play any acoustic guitars and have any acoustic guitar lessons ?
I don't have an electric as yet. It'll probably be an Ibanez, your reviews are helpful.
Tx. -don
thanks!
"I'll do it slow for ya"
Better than Yngwie's slow lol
nice and slowly.
It's easy playing this at this speed. First thing is, record yourself playing this at your fastest pace, then double the speed of the video. Okay, so maybe I'm still not as fast, but at least I'm half way there!

did you pluck for all chord you play?? or you just roll 3 chords in one pluck your advice is very much appreciated.. regards from malaysia..
Mantaaaab....
i love your playing i'm trying but having a hard time

I need warmup for this warmup
Did you use a effect processor or storm box or any software for getting that tone?
Rick Are you not using your right hand at all when ascending up the B7 chord pattern? Is it all legato during that chord?
The RG series of Ibanez came up because of Rick Graham
Subbed, u cool m8
I’m going to have to warm up to warm up to attempt this. And maybe add some oil or grease to my joints. I need five lifetimes of practice to do this.
What guitar are you playing igzackly?
what guitar is it Rick ?
I like it. Tabs?
Dumb question. Is this the basic key to sweep picking? It really sounds similar to me. I cannot figure out that technique,,but I think I can do this. Thanks.
jime6688 sweeping involves playing each note with the pick, typically one note per string. this is different. there's gonna be lots of sweep tutorials on TH-cam
😑
The only people that can probably do this warmup is Guthrie and Gilbert. Odd that all their last names start with G.
Kiko Goureiro
If only that rule applied to me lol
John Getrucci
This isn't that bad. Put the video on half speed and tab it out if you have to, it's fun to play!
I love john but actually no
What amp and boxes are you running that through?
Wondering what guitar is he playing????
Is that an Ibanez RG J.Custom?
once i finish this Im gonna tab it out for you guys as long as that's OK with Rick anyway.
done but its on paper so ill have to upload a pic.
Do you transcribe your lessons as Guitar Pro TAB files?
So, we use the same pattern to move ?
Is it bad if I roll my middle finger on the fourth note of every sequence?
Do you have a warmup for this warmup?
Is it possible to download your Axe Fx patches?
Pick nya ukuran berapa pak ? Senarnya ukuran berapa pak ?
What kind of amp are you using?
axe fx 2
Thanks
He sounds like Johnny in Fake Taxi
Your guitar.......Ibanez what model ?????
what is BPM fit for this warm up ..?
Okay, I literally ALMOST have the pattern down but something isn't tquite right. Can you throw up a tab somewhere? Thanks :)
you dont need tabs
+Nicanor Villanueva I'm glad YOU don't :D
+Nicanor Villanueva wait, I got it. GAINS! GAAAAAAAAAINS! +rick graham

Warmup lesson...ok...can I quit?

I thought I was a decent guitar player, but trying to do this makes me want to give up again, and I just bought a nice Jackson, again,3rd one in two years, the others are gone, guess this one will be too
Yeah no fucken worries
Bro... 😳
I just spend $350 on a yngwie malmsteen signature pickguard with pickups and honestly after seeing this I'm gonna keep my guitar stock and just give up on life 😂
Rick , please bro, you forgot to show us how to up the scale. I will appreciate. Show us what to do, like way you taught to down the scale. Thank you very much!
Hard to follow without a tab
Should have emphasized on the word “Try” lol but it sounds great
People’s Champ
Dat like to dislike ratio tho
First - THANKS RICK!

wey haz paro rola las tabs no seas culo de velorio u.u
Let me just appreciate the fact that you're not using fret 23 and 24
We're poor peasants, y'know
It’s look like greg howe
I tried..I failed..back to pentatonics..
+Slears ...do it slower?
Slears you failed like me beacsue he don't show u he tells u check out Dave nassie I've leaned a lot from him he breaks it down.
hey man you guitar have 24 frets, come on dont be afraid!
really hard warm up hahahha
Probably the most accurate guitar player ever....lacks soul though....
are you judging Rick's soul on a warmup exercise ?
Your warm ups are meltdowns for me :(
