It’s a cliffhanger I was honestly fine with if he left us hanging without that last panel I would have been bugging
I’m still baffled at how Oda is able to make each chapter better than the last. This is definitely a milestone chapter that we will look back on for years.
I'm not gonna say this was the best one piece chapter full stop, but I believe it was the best one since the time skip at least.
And there's a chance it will get beaten in two weeks... which is wild.

I like the idea that the "will of D" means that any of the D inheritors can become Joy Boy, but Luffy actually fit all the criteria, so finally in this critical moment of "dying" in battle, he awakened his fruit and became "Joy Boy" -- not so much as the reincarnation of him, but more just the title.

Oh dude! We don't know Kaido's full name yet, however he did say that he wanted to die, because dying completes a person. So what if one of the criteria is to die, but after you've completed all the other criteria.

What I'm thinking is the reason why the Gomu Gomu no Mi was a highly prioritized Devil Fruit by the Government is that they know that the spirit of Joy Boy has been placed or in whatever way, trapped in there. They know that if Joy Boy is somehow revived due to someone consuming the fruit, the mysterious missing piece of history will eventually be revealed.
Got a couple things I gotta get off my chest:
1. It’s pretty much confirmed now that the “Gum Gum Fruit” is the one the WG renamed in order to hide it and it’s connection to Joy Boy from the world. That’s also probably the reason they had Who’s Who guarding it and also probably why Shanks stole it. I wonder what it’s really called!!
2. It almost feels like we’re getting to the part of the story Oda already had in mind when he started One Piece. He let a LOT of elements that he came up with on the fly (warlords, supernovas, etc) extend the story, but now he has to find a way to connect all of that to his original vision. I can’t wait to see how he weaves it all together!
3. The idea of becoming Joy Boy “at a moment of death” makes it SO much clearer why Kaido has been TRYING TO DIE. Kaido probably knows a TON about the legend of Joy Boy and I can’t wait for the rest of his backstory!!

@@mouseofharry1703 I don’t think death has anything to do with awakenings. I do think it has something to do with Joyboy. Kaido might’ve heard the legend of Joyboy and found out that dying might be the key. But Luffy, who as you said, clings onto life and died is Joyboy. Not Kaido who wants to die

If it wasn't for the plot twist at the end and we really had every remaining fighter dog piled Kaido, the "Law saves Luffy with the immortal surgery", theory would've been plausible for the first time in the story

Bro so this is my theory on “joy boy”. The reason zunesha was able to recognize the “drums of liberation” as joy boy is not because of a reincarnation. But it’s because of literally the beat of luffy’s heart. Stay with me…luffy’s heart increases blood flow so he can do incredible things with his body. How does the blood flow increase? The heart pumps faster and faster!!! So if this devil fruits awakening is in a sense a “gear 5” then his heart is most likely pumping at extreme speeds. Hence the “dum dum dum dum” in the chapter. So zunesha has not heard a heart beat like that in 800 years because the last person to awaken the fruit was the original joy boy, so she thinks she is hearing the original joy boy when it’s just luffy awakening his devil fruit for the first time. This is why Who’s Who was punished so severely cause the world government was probably hiding that fruit for 800 years and didn’t want it to ever be awakened again. Now another question comes up if my theory on if the world government was actively hiding the fruit is correct is…did shanks truly know what he was stealing? And if so…how?

To awaken you need to die first and come back.

The thing about the "Chosen one" trope is that it is misused constantly, the "Chosen One" isn't about destiny, prophecies never refer to a specific person, there isn't supposed to be a chosen one who's birth is foretold, prophecies are in a sense a ritual, rituals do not work based on some underlying principals or logic, rituals work because the conditions have been met and the ritual casters believe these conditions to mean something, the chosen one isn't any specific person but the person who fulfils the conditions Joy Boy isn't some person who is destined to become the next Joy Boy, Joy Boy is the best person to become Joy Boy.
Even if people will hate his ass, let's just have a minute of silence for that one Cp0 with hat. He's adamantium balls will be remembered till the end of this arc, R.I.P whatever bloody pulp that's left of him now...

It's our favourite chapter too can't believe One Piece came so far. Amazing job Oda sensei.
It was very interesting to think about how each member of the will of D had a “role” to play. Like each D member had an effect on Luffy which led him to becoming JoyBoy after the requirements were satisfied. Makes me think of how Roger said he was “too late” and then he decided to have Ace. Maybe Ace’s role in the whole scheme was to die to propel Luffy forward.

If the condition of becoming a Joy Boy is to "die", maybe that's why Kaido wanted to die.

With all of the remaining allies fearing for their lives in this chapter, it would be epic to see the fear in Kaido's face when he just hears Luffy scream "KAIDOOOOO" from the rooftop to announce his return

honestly I think Kaido would be happy
From what I understand it’s not a “he’s the chosen one” situation” as much as it is a “when all the stars align” kind of deal. It would appear that key figures get spit out and have to all be around at the same time for a chance at changing the world. I say a chance because from what we’ve seen joy boy still failed last time all the stars aligned. It could even be a progressive thing where when the stars are aligned “ultimate progress” is made and this is the cycle where it finally comes to completion. One big thing that makes me think this is roger and him being too early. I interpret roger as the previous holder of the special “will” that is needed for joy boy. He interpreted the stones, did the math and realized he couldn’t make it to when the stars align (shirahoshi etc) so it would have to be his successor. Also we have “inherited wills” so it could be that the will of joy boy being passed down also means that it’s growing/maturing. From shanks’ perspective luffy inherited Rogers will but he saw a flaw in his previous captain which he corrected in luffy at a young age. Perhaps this in itself is actually the difference needed to actually be joy boy though for all I know and roger himself didn’t possess the will of joy boy.
What I’m worried about is a wheel of time book series rip off. Although, I prefer the idea much more than luffy being gone and it’s joy boy in his place now. Oda is kinda playing in dangerous waters here. So far one piece has had its own flavour so to speak. I’d hate for it to fall into the same old ish.
Honestly, I wouldn’t be worried if oda had stayed honest with us story wise but he hasn’t. If luffys fruit is special it kind of spits in the face of pretty much the original fact from oda which was luffy having a silly power that he makes work for him.
What am I hoping for? I’m not 100% yet, I’m still digesting it but as far as the physical goes, I hope the whole goo deal is luffy awakening and healing his damage for the most part. He could also simultaneously be transforming into a previous or new form for the fight but the one thing I always wanted out of awakening is the absorption of surroundings for replacing/regenerating damaged areas and increasing mass.
I trust Oda to not fall to hard on well worn stereo-types

So lets Examine What we Know About Joyboy's Return/Luffy's possible DF Awaking
1. WhosWho (A Top CP9 member rivaling Lucci) was sent by the W.G. to transport the Gum-Gum Fruit to Authorities but was intercepted by Shanks and it was stolen
2.When Zunisha Appeared at the shores of Wano Kuni The Gorosei were baffled and stated "That DF HASNT AWAKENED IN YEARS!" A DF we find out they changed its very name
3.The Gorosei ordered that Luffy be eliminated immediately to prevent a "Worst-Case Scenario"
Soooo my Hypothesis is the "Gum-Gum" Fruit (Luffy's DF) was probably JOYBOY'S DF and its VERY possible that being Rubber-like isnt even its ability (I also have a very strong suspicion that Zunisha might even be a product of its abilities but there's no way to be sure)

Technically Kaido was proclaimed as the victor of the rooftop battle, if I’m remembering correctly, so since Kaido isn’t on the roof now, you could consider this a new “Luffy vs Kaido” battle.
This may sound cliche, but I'm hoping Oda does something along the lines of "Joy Boy vs. Kaido"
Granted we don't even know if Joy Boy is in Luffy's body. It could just be that Zunisha feels a similar aura coming from Luffy that Joy Boy once gave off during his time. Hence the reason why they felt the need to say _Joy Boy has returned_

@@user-le2yf6kn2j yeah. What would interest me is if luffy was really dead for a few moments. Maybe something happen during this time regarding him and his devilfruit. If that fruit is joyboys it could be true that a part of the previous once are in there as well. A little bit like Avatar and Luffy could talk with the last remnents of joyboys soul and awakend it this way.
I really hope luffy still stays luffy and that even now he is really beaten up and only got one last punch against kaido in awaken form :D it would be to much for me if he is complete recovered and kicks kaido ass without any difficult or drawback. And it is his first time awakening so he should not be instantly perfect with it :D

Glad you did a review today instead of Sunday. Last night I kept seeing spoilers so crazy that I read the chapter myself. Usually I wait and just hear your take and eventually watch the anime, but I couldn't wait
I saw on twitter earlier today that the onomotopia we were seeing for the sounds of the drums that Zuneisha describes being the same symbols as the sounds that were playing during the party at the end of Skypeia. I haven't gotten the chance to verify it for myself yet, so don't take it as fact but it would be really interesting if that were the case

Joyboy is any user that awakens Luffy's devil fruit. I believe that what Zunesha was referring to when he claimed Joyboy's return. Also, maybe Luffy's fruit is the third ancient weapon Uranus?
The Narrator is Ussop and he's been retelling the story of him and his dear friends to a group of young kids in Syrup Village, he's an old man at that point and no one other then Kaya believes him in the whole Village but he doesn't mind he just enjoys sharing the tale of his adventures in his old age.

Could Luffy dying (there are sound effects for his heart stopping and starting again) bring the Grand Fleet to Wano? I imagine his Vivre card is not looking good.
EDIT: I think it’s important to note his heart restarting coincides with Zunesha’s drums of liberation line. Luffy’s awakening is likely the same as Joyboy/Nika (same fruit) and that is what Zunesha recognized.

There is a fine line between reincarnation and 'carrying on the will'
And considering that carrying on the will of those before is already a theme in One Piece, I think it fits. Luffy isn't JoyBoys reincarnation, but he does carry his will. Oda is an amazing writer, so I trust him to not cross the line.

Luffy’s heart more than likely stopped. He more than likely actually died for a moment. Everyone stopped sensing Luffy until Zunisha at the end of the chapter. As for what happened at the end with him melting, awakening the gum gum fruit. Not the rubber rubber fruit, no I think that’s the rename of the gomu gomu. Adding in the special paramecia stuff which comparing to Katakuri it definitely is… yeah I think you called it Tekking.

Only law and momo noticed the "voice" leaving luffy, which could indicate that only the D clan can hear it.
As for the comparison tekking was looking for, when I saw luffy's smile I imagined the maka vs. Crona fight where maka gave in the black blood. So im just imagining luffy jumping down from the roof laughing while kicking kaido in the head while law looks up at him and says, "thats not strawhat-ya?"

I think it would be really effective if their final hits come with the music that indicates Luffy's about to win. You know, that "Tun. Tun. Tun. Tun-tun-tun-tun." Then it abruptly cuts as Bob Lucci stops Luffy. Kaido is declared the winner, Luffy is declared dead and all that... And then the music starts again as Zunicha notices the drums of liberation, Luffy is shown smiling and melting, and the episode ends.
4:27 I imagine this scene like how Ichigo has his theme song interrupted against Aizen the first time they encountered each other.

What if Shanks, who was passed down the hat (by Roger) was actually supposed to eat the Gomu Gomu. He had enough info and maybe Thats why he kept a low profile and consumed no fruit just waiting for the Gomu Gomu to appear again. He could have been a potential Joy Boy; especially since he was not with Roger in Raftel. He himself was technically not “too soon”.
Also Shanks could be Roger’s direct inheritor and Blackbeard maybe Xebec’s ? I know its farfetched but could explain why those two are direct opposites and know so much. Blackbeard knows (from Xebec) as much as Shanks knows (from Roger) about fruits, Joy Boy and stuff. Those two seem to have more than just hating each other as a connection. It was a race. And this could explain why Shanks went out of his way to warn WhiteBeard about Blackbeard specifically.

We've got it implied that the Gomu Gomu no Mi had a name change, and we have this other very lore relevant two syllable word floating around. I don't have a clue what the actual power of a Smile Smile fruit would be, especially since everything Luffy has done so far is still part of that same fruit... But, gonna put this idea out there to be mocked and likely turn out to be wrong... but maybe just maybe I'll be right and get nothing for it.

I have a feeling this will tie back to the Will of D., a literal "Will-Power". We know nothing about the previous Joyboy's devil fruit or the Will of D, and what we've read may prove to connect the two through these means. Furthermore, Kaido always wanted to die, hastily ordered a surrender, and killed the CP0 guy immediately (which implies he was upset at being cheated out of another chance of becoming Joyboy) and thought of the possibility of Luffy inheriting the will of Joyboy. I could see this being an *inherited* power, similar to how Deku was chosen to inherit one-for-all, perhaps Luffy satisfied the conditions for what the next Joyboy should be; dying for the LIBERATION of others being the final check box being marked. This to me seems not only the most likely, but also the most pleasing fan wise (because I know we'll all be super mad if its a possession thing) as well as connect a lot of dots in a sensical fashion. Remember that Devil fruits are called such because the world was taught they have "devils" inside them by those who know their origin best and control information; the world government. Who's to say the "Devil" inside Luffy's fruit is actually the spirit of Sun God Nika, and perhaps Luffy AWAKENED this ancient Liberator who finally felt he found someone who could carry out his *will*?
I personally disagree with Kaido's part. I think he was venting his anger for being cheated out of such a fun and good fight that he rarely gets. He flashed back to Oden where their final clash also got ruined by a distraction. It's somewhat similar to how Katakuri got angry at Flampé that his duel with Luffy was interrupted and that he would win by such a cheap trick from a third party.
