No, I'm referring to the golden age of gaming. When dlc's wasn't even a word. When you got a game you got the whole game and not 50-75% of it. When companies that sold games with game breaking glitches were held liable for their faulty product and not just put up with in the hopes that they would fix it while those same companies made sequels with the exact same problems like Fallout 3, NV and 4.

And in Dragon Quest 8, Rhapthorne isn't even ACTUALLY the real final boss! Once you roll the end credits the game lets you go on another quest where you get info on the heroes' origins and fight a multiform transforming dragon that you have to beat several times to get the ultimate armor and the true ending. Of course, then after beating him you have to go back and fight Rhapthorne *again* to trigger the credits, but that is what it is and he's a total pushover at that point.
robbybevard in terms of story he’s the real final boss the Dragovian King is a post game boss that can get you the true ending (but you only need to beat one of its forms for that ending)

then they released the definitive edition on the 3ds and you have an even harder boss dungeon than the dragovian trials
Why is no one mentioning the fact that Kingdom Hearts 1 never seems to end with the boss battles.
Jay McMillon You read my mind. I honestly thought maybe after Malifecent and then Riku/Ansem it would be the end, but wait.. No? There's another world? Ugh ok. (Not to mention Hollow Bastion is confusing as heck) then you need to go fight Ansem again... And then again... and... again? OMG DIE ALREADY. And let's not even mention those freaking balls that shoot lasers at you as you try to kill Ansem for the 50th time. I can't express how satisfying it was to finally beat that game.

Cause all the end bosses are pretty much just different forms of Ansem, there wasn't really a new hidden contender that comes out of nowhere after you beat him.

Almost all SMT and persona games always have a fake final boss i think.
INfernoLake some of them have different endings and secret bosses instead of a true boss

Persona 3 had an even bigger twists due to the fact that you end up killing the 12 Boss Shadows only to find out that they were the key to causing the end of the world (whoops) then you have to go an kill off you broski (nooo) and then fight Nyx.
Being cocky because i destroyed Alduin twice on Legendary difficulty. Then the Ebony Warrior shows up.
And then modifications... And Miraak...

Luxra Ehhh P4's true final boss is pretty easy to figure out with all the hints the game gives you.
Not really. Found out about Izanami only cause a friend told me about it, otherwise the game would have ended right after Ameno Sagiri for me.
Which at the end, I was really glad. Ameno is a cool boss fight, and he has some great boss-fight sound-track, but I kinda found a giant eyeball as the final boss, kinda dissapointing, after all ther other crazy boss designs.
She shakes your hand at the start of the game, your controller rumbles, you feel sick shortly after, You have a dream on the very same day where she tells you that you can try and pursue the truth but it's pointless, She only appears when it's rain, in which the midnight channel is usually on, she only talks about the midnight channel, the main culprit starts killing people a day after she shakes your hand, sagiri both times tries to stop you from finding the truth, Shadow Teddie, Hell the very fact that the other two people who got the same power as you have Sagiri's in them, both say the very same thing about the truth and the mystery of the midnight channel's existence not being solved should allude to the fact that Izanami is the mastermind.
Honestly at my first playthrough, I totally forgot that with the handshake and pretty much ignored her the whole time. ^^;
Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time. The entire game Dr. Nefarious is the villain, then after you beat him you have to fight Azimuth, a fellow Lombax who aided our heroes in their journey.
Yep, that was a cool plot twist.
i'm surprised that Azura's Wrath is not in the list. let's be honest, the story is the biggest clusterfuck when it comes to final bosses. the true (true-ture-true²) final boss isn't even in the main story but in DLC!
Precisely the paywall to actually kill the final boss might have been the reason NOT to include it. Since paywalling a boss is douchest thing to do.
Gonna make a quick prediction before watching the video and say Final Fantasy or a Square Enix game makes it on the list because they do this a lot.
I think that would fit more with 7 worst ideas for DLC

Are we really going to pass over Persona 4? Spend ages trying to get through this lengthy and amazing experience, you finally defeat the giant eyeball/fog machine, bliss washes over you. the "epilogue" plays. You say your goodbyes. But wait! if you play your cards right (pun completely intended) it ends up Eyeball-Magee isn't it! Now go through one final secret dungeon and fight Izanami. Essentially a death Goddess. Have fun!
Who liked that in Injustice 2, Braniac wasnt the Finall boss but it was actually Batman or Superman

By the time you get to Margos wet nurse you've dealt with much tougher bosses so I think that helps but yeah MWN and Moon presence are both piss easy comparatively speaking. Gehrman is a decent challenge I found. But thankfully the dlc came through with (in my mind) the two most difficult bosses in the game orphan and Ludwig
Granted MANY Souls final bosses aren't the hardest ones. It's changed recently but like no one is saying Gwyn or Nashandra are the hardest or even Soul of Cinder (although he is difficult still)
He's right though. Final Fantasy does the 'final boss' fake out pretty much EVERY time.
In shin mehami tensei: nocturne the final dungeon of the game can be entirely skipped if you make the right dialogue choices. also, the bosses that appear in the dungeon change depending on which character you sided with. the ending is different for each character, but the final boss is the same for each of those, with the exception of the "true demon" ending. to even be able to get this ending, you have to agree to the challenge at the start of the game, leading to a total of over 20 extra boss fights not to mention a massive extra dungeon to go through. if you meet all the requirements before getting to the final boss, then once you beat him (a literal god of light and creation), Lucifer appears before you, congratulates you, and then gives you one final challenge: beat him. and he is ridiculously strong. for a jrpg it is one of the hardest fights I've ever seen.

I was unfortunately spoiled by twitter. I didn't read too much, but just enough to not be surprised by the false ending. That said, it was pretty insane how much effort they put into it, with a whole ending credits and song just for it. And you could even consider Reynn to represent you within the game, your loading of the save an attempt to defy destiny just as she attempts to defy hers.
Exactly. That's why I was in shock, I didn't expect such an ending and there were no signs of it not being the end.
A game that gets frequently overlooked, Eternal Sonata, has the weirdest final boss switch i have ever seen... You chase Count Walts throughout the entire game, only to have Frederic Chopin (i'm not even kidding...) betray you, and you have to take him down before you can end the game.
Alistair from Ratchet and Clank: A crack in time does the same thing, being your ally throughout the entire game, only to try and kill you in the final 10 minutes of the game!
Yes, I'm constantly trying to bring up Eternal Sonata where I can because it's a very underrated game that I wish we could have seen more from in some form (although I believe there was something about it being on stage?). I also wonder how many people know that you can actually let Chopin kill you in the final battle for an alternate ending that means he wakes up and lives (not canon of course).

how about pokemon gold, you beat the final four in your region, defeat your rival, then the professor tells You that the first region opened up. then you have to go through all the first gyms, final four of that region to finally duke it out with red himself

I think the most challenging thing about fighting the Devil was trying to avoid getting one-shot by the sledgehammer he had swinging between his legs in Dante's Inferno.
What about the ultimate fakeout, Medusa in Kid Icarus Uprising? I never expected Hades to stick his badass face out of the credits.

Borderlands 2: Terramorphous
Screw Terramorphous that took more of my time than the rest of the game
Zane Mingus ehhh terramorph is more like an optional boss hes not part of the mainstory hes just a really hard endgame side quest if that makes sense lol

After killing him, an almost 1 Hour ending-sequence starts and at the end of that...
A new secret path opens, where you can meet and fight the TRUE final boss of the game:
A Mighty Dragon with 2 Forms, wich you have to beat ONLY to get the Chance to Beat another Dragon-Boss with 100(!) Forms...
That's what I call an Endgame content :D After you beaten them all and revealed the Story behind the mysterious main character, you now are able to see an alternative ending sequence (after playing the whole game a second time) :3

Obscure 2 anyone? you fight the supposed fial boss and then the CREDITS ROLL and then what you think is post credits cut-scene turns out to be the rest of the game untill you fight the real final boss, kenny

the game make you think its mitsuo, but you're just halfway throught the game. then it make you think its namatame, but no actually its adachi oh wait now its ameno-sagiri nope its izanami
Phoenix Fox The Mitsuo part is actually pretty smartly executed, as it's an obvious fake final boss if you really think about it, so he can get your guard down if you assume wrong choices down the path are so obvious.
I can't help but think that this video has a greater message or meaning behind it.... None the less I still love it.

I remember the first time you fight the Dragon in Dragons Dogma. Beat it and everything seems good. Until you realise you put a whole in the earth and then fight God. Good times
Moon Presence is kind of a weird bossfight though. It has less than half of Gehrman's health, and during the fight, rallying seems to be significantly boosted, making regaining health without using blood vials pretty easy. It's kind of aggressive (though nothing compared to some other bosses), but only two of its attacks are worth noting. The one that prevents you from using healing items, and the global AoE that reduces you to one health. It's the only boss I've beaten without a HUD.
Who dafuq thought Mergo's Wet Nurse was Bloodborne's final boss?
Literally nobody and the worse part is they didn't even mention the REAL final boss which is Moon Presence......

Nier:Automata just did the Dragon Quest thing. You beat the final boss on ur first play through only to find that you have to play through a second time to unlock the second half of the game. Oh and that's not all. Once you beat that one you have to play a third time as a different character to truly fight the final boss. Only to find out afterwards that if you want to fight the true final boss. You have to have bought/found all the weapons in the game and have all of them fully upgraded. Then you can fight the true final boss. (Of which is actually optional. The actual ending will have already been achieved before that.)
Baten Kaitos on the GameCube has a boss in the middle of the end crawl. A real simple boss fortunately.
Magnus Asplund Someone knows that game!:O that game was my childhood. I never beat it(children don't do numbers and planning X3) but I love it to this day.
ForestofCicadas Baten Kaitos is only one of my favourite Rpg's ever! :) I even played through the sequel. I can recommend that you follow the Twitch streamer Baffan. He occasionally do speed runs of Baten Kaitos, both any% and 100%.
Anyone who's ever played a game like this will know you never fight "just a man" as the last boss.
And that is one more reason why the original dark souls is a masterpiece and no matter how many remakes or sequels or spiritual successors there are nothing will ever be like it.

Anyone remember Dragon's Dogma and it's final bosses? You spend the entire time preparing to kill the dragon, the almighty ruler of the monsters, only to find that such is not the case. You'll return to Gran Soren (the main city) to fight the duke there, afterwards you fall into an infinity looping hole killing dozens of other monsters and collecting weird shards that can revive your character. Once you get twenty of these shards, you fight the real final boss, the previous Dragon Dogma (a character you play as in the tutorial) it's so weird and convoluted that it almost takes out some of the fun of the game

You know what would be great? In these spoilery videos (which seems to be all you do anymore) you could put list of the games in video into description, so we could see what to watch and what not.
Here is another boss. It goes by the name of Blixer. In JSAB there is a level called Final Boss. Dodge King Blixer’s attacks and you make it up the tower, ready to purify the last mega triangle. Only to have Blixer come from nowhere, blow you away, then impale himself with the last triangle, turning him into Annihilate and later his true final form, Destriod
There'isnt PERSONA 4/5
I am not sure if they count since they are optional, but DS3's main story leads you to the Soul of Cinder who is considered even by Fromsoftware to be the final boss of the story... but then they added a bunch of optional and much harder bosses, like the Nameless King (the real prize to beat), Sister Friede in the first DCL, and Slave Knight Gael and the monster called Darkeater Midir in the second DLC.
Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen. Daimon... Yeah the game doesn't tell you but if your gona grind then you'll realize that Daimon has an Awakening form... But you can always walk away and be proud that you'd beat Daimon. OR just face the beast with a face on his belly and even more resistance than last time and hope you'll kill him. Unless your that one guy in level endless with the explosive arrows... You missed Daimon From Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen.

FINAL FANTASY XV FLASHBACKS INTENSIFY
I was hoping he'd have mentioned Omega 2 from Final Fantasy. It's such an OP end-of-the-end game monstrosity that it doesn't even drop LOOT. It just gives you this badge thingy so you can prove to people you actually figured out how to kill it.... Seriously, it has stupid amounts of HP, is immune to or reflects almost everything AND has the ability to force party members to leave your team mid-fight. It takes a lot of skill simply to have any hope of killing the giant mechanical spider
Andrew Ryan and Atlas really fucked me up, I was so sure it was all about to end and then Ryan basically commits suicide and leaves you gobsmacked
You can mention “phantasy star 4” on genesis. I was amazed when *spoiler* that’s only half of the game. And map expanded. Same thing for one of the Pokémon on GBC where you beat the whole map then goes back to your home and you see some water which is totally unsuspicious in the start but now you know you can cross it with later catches water mons, then you find this equally sized new east area map and same amount of adventure and those 4 final bosses and legend Pokémon. Oh my god that made my day back there.

It goes: Mitsuo (although he clearly wasn't final boss) > Namatame/Kunino-sagiri > Adachi > Ameno-Sagiri > Kusumi-no-Okami (who's only in Golden and if you maxed out Marie's social link) and then finally Izanami, who transforms into Izanami-no-Okami halfway through the fight.
no persona 4 or 5? p4 has like 3 final boss battles 😂
I am so glad Necron made this list. I actually hated fighting him because he felt completely tacked on. Almost like the game had budgeted itself for say 18 bosses or something but they had a little extra moolah and thought to themselves 'hey, lets just spend the rest of the budget on necron for laffs"

Dragon Quests III and IV had decoy final bosses. In III, you're initially told that the big bad is Baramos, who was the target of your father Ortega's fatal final quest, but once you take him out and return home to celebrate, Baramos's boss makes himself known: the Archfiend Zoma. In IV, the ultimate evil is Estark, sealed away ages ago and accidentally unearthed recently, but the true final boss (the silver hair gives it away) is Psaro the Manslayer, who uses the Secret of Evolution to turn into an Estark-like abomination after his beloved Rosaly is murdered.

The first one I thought of was in the first Dishonored game, when you kill/apprehend the lord regent and you think everything is all peachy. It was actually satisfying to get poisoned just so I could keep going! Never thought I'd say that.....

My favorite instance of that is Rogue galaxy. Seed totally seemed like final boss material, then he transformed into Beast seed which made it even better, then, the game just keeps going.

A real kicker would have been Metal gear solid 3. You think volgan is the worst but the real final is The Boss, but then it's not even that bad! Because then the real final Boss is Snake! And the struggle is "Don't cry when snake salutes her grave" A fight I fail every single time ( °-°).

In dragons dogma you defeat the final boss but the game doesn't end and you have to perform a hidden action to actually beat the game.
What about DMC 3 and Remastered DMC; or is it because Vergil is a hybrid he does not count.

Btw, to everyone commenting, yeah, Gwyn isn't all that hard. Beat him on my bare fist run. And although he's technically a god, he is a god who has burned away all of his power, at the point he's at, you and him are equal (or should be.) so he's more or less just a dude, a badass dude, with godly music, but a dude none the less.
I never finished Nioh(the whole time i played it, i just wished it was more like Dark Souls than it is) but while i was playing, i never once thought Kelly would be the final boss. He just has "villain's right hand man" written all over him.

I didn't find Dhoulmagus that much of a difficulty spike back then, but Emphirea (the damn bird.)
Blasting my party with magic, nullifying status increases while healing its own eventual status decreases at the same time...being almost resistant to magic and physical attacks all at once.
Multiheal really is your friend in that battle (leveling up Angelo to 31 to get the blasted thing)

This list now can be improved with Hollow Knight (obvious spoilers ahead).
The final boss of the game is THE Hollow Knight, but if you do a lot of optional things by exploring - you can get a charm called "Void's Heart" which will give you access to 2 more endings beside the default one.
One of those endings is to fight a god-like creature called The Radiance that is literally the hardest boss in the vanilla game.
