Okay, the reason Misty is angry at Lawerence (The Villan's name) is because of the way he's going about it. Pokemon Trainers catch pokemon sure, but they give them plenty of freedom and it's not like they just catch them and store them (atleast not in the anime). Lawrence meanwhile essentially plans to just keep the birds as displays. Litterally keeping them trapped in those cages just for him to stare at whenever he feels the need. Very notable difference.

This and the first movie's criticism of capturing and making Pokemon fight was actually an edit done by 4Kids to simply it. For example, during the battle between the Pokemon and their cloned versions, Jessie and James have compared the fighting to harming oneself. Seeing yourself in both the past and the present, all the while reflecting on their own existence. Linking it to their own situation, since they hurt their old selves with the job they took and not feeling good about it at all. Here, the reason why Lawrence kidnapping the Legendary Birds is seen as a bad thing is because the movie's main theme is about living out your own existence however you see fit, but taking into consideration other people and living beings and respecting everyone's values. That is something he didn't do, because he merely saw them as things to collect as oppose to living beings that should be cared about.
It’s probably why the 3rd movie manages to hold up so well. From what I gather, there was very little about the story or themes that changed, so even watching it over a decade later I still enjoy it.
It's amazing how in a matter of generations we've gone from a culture that held "the putting away of childish things" as a sign of maturity to be strived for, to one that cherishes the relics and the feelings of childhood to the point we've got entire schools of thought that examine the core concepts, forever searching for new insights into the phenomena.

Not to mention it allowed you to make a home base in certain spots so you wouldn't have to go to PC's to store your Pokèmon, and you can buy stuff to make it more homely. Though I agree. So...as pokemon nerd that's now in their late 20s and is perfectly aware that they probably should have grown out of this...I feel the need to mention something about the lore of this franchise that explains the whole "Pokemon weren't meant to fight thing". It's been well established, even from the very first game, that pokemon ARE supposed to be companions. They LIKE to fight and the reason they go along with trainers instead of turning on them the minute they're let out is because with a trainer they are given a relatively safe and controlled environment in which to grow stronger. That's why we get messages about them not being tools or not being meant to fight to the death. Humans and pokemon have a symbiotic relationship with each other and have for centuries, so when this kinda stuff comes along it's basically seen as them fucking with the natural order. That isn't just an excuse to hand wave away the fact this is glammed up dog fighting. It's a well established part of the lore....it's just that it's not well established in every single movie. Like there are bit here and there, in the games and random dialogues and moments in the anime.
I will never forget getting both my parents to take me to see this at the theater. Both of them were asleep halfway through. I was a little embarrassed but I knew it wasn't their thing so I understood. Was actually the last movie I saw until I caught 3 on a local station late at night and the special broadcast of Destiny Deoxys in the last days of the show being on local channels. I miss back then but not for the show or the games, but the memories and experiences during those years. So many things happened and changed so fast that it was hard to adjust. I still have trouble with coping and functioning as an adult.
This ship was really cemented for me by the song on the Pokemon Soundtrack CD which had Misty sing an entire song about how much she wants to confess her love for Ash.

The Novelization of the First Movie makes it clear that in universe, the age of legal adulthood is 10 years old. I mean... think about it: a pokemon licence is a drivers license, a hunting license, a flying license, a concealed carry permit, a license with which you can rent other modes of transportation, and an EMT certification (you need some credentials to be able to diagnose and apply medicine). Heck, in the manga, White (the femalr protag from Black and White) is a 16 year old CEO who goes on to help found pokemon hollywood before she turns 18. ... Pokemon's world is fucking weird.

Chrono Cross is a mess of a game with a monstrously unfocused plot a far too many characters that have absolutely no relevance. The gameplay is good but the fact that there's no exp system makes any non boss battle tedious.
So glad that Sage was able to post this. Like Sage I lost interest in Pokemon around the age of 13 when Ruby and Sapphire came out but regained it back around 2009. Since then I have become a devoted fanboy once more to an ever greater degree. Still Pokemon the Movie 2000 has always held a very special place in my heart as it was the only Pokemon movie that I ever owned on VHS. Wise words at the end there Sage. I'm sorry to hear that you can't feel that sense of wonder that I had lost for so long as well. Pokemon 3 was pretty good. Pokemon 2000 was boring and Pokemon The First Movie is one of the few kid's films that still offends me to this day.

3 is the best one. It's very much in the vein of 1980s fantasy films like Neverending Story and Labyrinth (dear sweet Arceus especially Labyrinth)
