Outstanding video! Love your style of avoiding constant cuts, video edits and instead rolling with continuous flow and sharing great knowledge & great music
I’ve been collecting jazz since the late 1980s and was given my start by a jazz vocalist and her spouse who is a music professor in a Vancouver college who is a jazz expert. But I’m learning tons watching your channel. The Oliver Nelson and Blakey and JM albums are in my top 10-15 all time. Just loving the new Analogue repressing of Black Saint and Mingus x 5. Just amazing sound
Hi Dan Great video very educational and inspiring. I will have to check out some of those titles that I’ve not seen before Thanks from a fellow human earthling
I think I got here through Kevin's videos? Either way, thanks for dropping some great knowledge, look forward to more! Been picking up all the Shaw I can find, just got a beautiful Japanese press of Blackstone Legacy. Not sure if you like the Strata East vibe but Shaw's Love Dance is my favorite of his that Ive heard so far. Peace!
I'm I the only person who thinks Coltrane's Africa/Brass is one of his best? I feel like no one talks much about that one. I'm newer to jazz and Africa/Brass was one of the albums that made jazz click for me. I would love to hear what more seasoned jazz aficionados think about Coltrane's first Impulse!
This was epic and brilliant but also very very dangerous as I bought four records with morning coffee. I reigned it in and added a lot to my want list too. I'll add my voice to those calling for more of the same!
@@TheJazzShepherd They were all Impulse label reissues. I prefer to avoid the snap crackle and pop and get the new stuff where I can but not always possible. We've all got our wee foibles. With the record stores being closed I tend to stack up a want list and then keep an eye out on a good price for sealed or NM copies... must be the tight fisted Scot in me! 1. John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, gatefold, NM (fingers crossed it is in good nick). 2. Roy Haynes Quartet - Out of the Afternoon, sealed. This one has been on my watch list since Teddy (Eat Sleep Vinyl) recommended a couple of years back. 3. Oliver Nelson - The Blues and Abstract Truth, sealed. 4. Sonny Rollins - Alfie, gatefold, sealed. Another Teddy recommendation I think. I know you weren't recommending this album today (too much love but an greatalbum I think you said) but it had been on my list for a long time and when you mentioned it I nipped in to check the price. At £10 it was rude not to! Enjoy the rest of your day, it's early afternoon here and I'm going to enjoy the sunshine.✌🏻Jamie
Thanks for the info. I appreciate you pointing out some of the not so well known titles. I really liked that Mingus plays piano album - never heard that one before.
@@TheJazzShepherd I was rummaging in a record store, maybe 40 years ago when a trumpet player I didn't recognise came, I asked shop owner who the guy was, he said Woody Shaw, needless to say I took that one home too ;) Peace.
Insightful as always, Shep. Making me think; when it comes to my own collecting, label or artist? Been collecting the small run of Black Jazz Records stuff that's getting reissued, and it's such a diverse range of music throughout only 20 odd records. I'm thinking I might go this way with the major labels, space/ finances permitting! Peace, brother.. ✌️😁👍
Man, do I feel you brother! You are a great, conscious human. I'm in Montreal. I'd love to have the chance someday to come to your coffee shop when it opens. Talk, connect, listen to music and play for people. Cheers have a great day.
Dan, I'm not sure I agree with you re: Elvin leaving Trane and then playing not so out, Yes, he joined Duke very briefly after departing, but the New Elvin Jones Trio with Garrison and Joe Farrell and two record dates with Ornette were out weren't they?
I feel those were the exceptions...look at his work at Atlantic...his side work as well.... tons of bluesy rootsy stuff.... Nothing he does after Trane seems to be very close to where Trane was in 64 65 etc.....
@@TheJazzShepherd I have been looking for a copy of that Jones & Davis record. So many good Lps on that list. As a request how about a Mingus or a Duke episode

These videos are just what I need to get me home from work stuck in traffic. Keep em coming Shep!
Loved your final thoughts of being human beings first ... nations are just labels to control us as persons. Cheers from a Costa Rican brother 💪🏻 🇨🇷
Amen my brutha

GREAT STUFF ACROSS THE BOARD
Great video. Like your tomato analogy. Thanks again
Its a good analogy.. And is something people everywhere should hear... I thonk
Oh wow--listened to the end and now am subscribed. Jungian, gnostic, universalist jazz. I'm down.
Well said my fellow tomato.

its a slightly challenging listen for some, holy grail to some, Dolphy certainly ups the ante ....a great piece in step with the times

Thats a beautiful record!!!
Fantastic review of the Impulse label! No way I can do Ascension 😂 East Broadway Run Down is one of my favorite Sonny records 👏
Broadway is a great record..rather unheralded
Great stuff Daniel.
I too love that Mingus album Dan... incredible.
Yeah its beautiful;!
Enjoyed that, thanks.
Wowsers! Theres more to Jazz music than Blue Note Records. 😮
there certainly is lol
If you haven't read it, a book worth checking out is : The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records by Ashley Khan.
Keith, agreed, I read that book recently, would recommend it, Peace.
Owned it fir years, great stuff..actually need to reread it at some point
Thanks for mentioning Woody Shaw. You have to get some of his records.
I DEF NEED TO GRAB A FEW

Thanks for this Dan excellent stuff. I'm pretty sure Impulse is releasing a lot of anniversary pressings this year .
I think so too!
Its about time

Between this Ken and Dan you should get a PhD in jazz if you listen to them for 3 years
Impulse find for me: Johnny Hodges - Inspired Abandon, love it. Impulse is worth its weight in gold if for nothing else than Ellington/Hawkins
YUP those legends make some fine work here
Another great video! Which Tears For Fears album were you listening to? Love their music, they are one of the all-time most underrated bands. - Russ
